music Grupo Ase Thursday 10th February 2011, 7.30pm

Chapel of the Ascension, University of Chichester Tickets £5 / £3 concessions. This is a lecture for the World Music module. Members of the public are very welcome to attend. University students and staff admitted free of charge on presentation of a student / staff card (UCMA / WSMS) Founded in 2007 as a percussionists’ collective, and based in London, Grupo Ase comprises 5 drummers and a dancer. The group plays a repertoire of traditional AfroCuban rhythms and songs – these ‘toques y cantos’ come largely from the Lucumi (Yoruba) legacy in Cuba; specifically from the musical traditions of Santeria (Regla de Ocha), and are played on a family of 3 hourglass-shaped drums called Bata. The songs are sung in Lucumi. Grupo Ase also plays Rumba, the music and some would say the religion, of the street in Cuba. Rumba is played on Congas, Cajon, Clave, Cata and Shekere, and the songs are in Spanish. The group’s set gives a flavour of the vitality, beauty and richness of Afro-Cuban folkloric music.

John Law Piano Solo Friday 11th February 2011, 7.30pm Chapel of the Ascension, University of Chichester Tickets £5 / £3 concessions. University students and staff admitted free of charge on presentation of a student / staff card (UCMA / WSMS) Original compositions crossing between jazz and classical & improvised and notated, covering the entire spectrum from quiet, beautiful ballads, through to high energy, groovebased extemporisations. John Law, a prize-winning classical prodigy on piano, turned away from classical piano studies to pursue jazz and improvised music when he was 23 and has been involved in, and acclaimed for, his work in a wide variety of jazz, as well as modern classical, projects: from solo piano albums based on plainchant through trio and quartet work covering the whole spectrum from freely improvised music through standard jazz repertoire and works by Thelonious Monk, right through to composing large scale works for his semi-classical ensemble Cornucopia. His main current project is the acclaimed trio The Art of Sound, with Yuri Goloubev and Asaf Sirkis. John Law has played at over fifty festivals worldwide and recorded more than twenty five albums, working with musicians as diverse as Andy Sheppard, Tim Garland and Evan Parker. www.myspace.com/johnlawmusic

The Beggar’s Opera, by John Gay Thursday 3rd March – Saturday 5th March 2011 Presented by students from University of Chichester Alexandra Theatre, Bognor Regis Box office 01243 861010 / www.alexandratheatre.co.uk 7.30pm, Tickets £12, £10 and £5 (NUS) The Beggar’s Opera was an instant hit with audiences after its opening night on 29th January 1728, in London. The story of prostitutes, cut throats, villains and beggars; of hanging, poverty and complete amorality delighted the crowds more used to the high minded activities of the gods and heroes depicted in the Baroque operas of the time. The music was taken from the folk tunes of the day and in this production we have orchestrated the traditional orchestral ensemble with rock instruments to create a fusion of folk, rock, orchestral genres.

Piano Masterclass Friday 4th March 2011, 3pm Chapel of the Ascension, University of Chichester Tickets £5 / £3 concessions. University students and staff admitted free of charge on presentation of a student / staff card (UCMA / WSMS) The University of Chichester is delighted to present Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama Piano Professor, Fali Pavri, a committed and sought-after performer and teacher with many prize-winning students. He has given masterclasses in many countries around the world including recently in Estonia, Finland, Cyprus, India and South Africa, and we are pleased that on this occasion he will be working exclusively with students from the piano department here at the University. With a varied repertoire of pieces on offer this will be a fascinating afternoon for anyone interested in every aspect of performance. Fali Pavri enjoys a busy and diverse career as soloist, chamber musician, teacher and adjudicator. Born in Mumbai, India he studied the piano at the Moscow Conservatoire with Professor Victor Merzhanov and at the Royal Academy of Music, London with Christopher Elton. The many eminent musicians he has played with around the world include Mstislav Rostropovich, Richard Hickox, Andrew Marriner, Roddy Williams, Mark Padmore, the Vellinger and Vertavo Quartets, Leopold Trio and Scottish Ensemble. He has recorded critically acclaimed discs on the Guild and Delphian labels and regularly broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 and Radio Scotland.

What’s on

music John Law's Opt Trio Saturday 5th March 2011, 7.30pm

Chapel of the Ascension, University of Chichester Tickets £5 / £3 concessions. University students and staff admitted free of charge on presentation of a student / staff card (UCMA / WSMS) As a contrast to his on-going Art of Sound Trio, which plays exclusively his own compositions, this new trio project will feature arrangements of standards and the odd unusual tune from further afield like Sting or Nick Drake. Some interesting new arrangements but with the emphasis on time, swing and grooves, and, in contrast to the AOS, which featured unusual sounds in the way of added electronics and unusual instruments such as the hang and the glockenspiel, this trio goes back to the classic piano, bass, drums format. This gig is part of The Somewhere Tour, a national tour supported by Jazz Services. www.myspace.com/johnlawmusic

Voice Masterclass with Colin Baldy Tuesday 8th March 2011, 6.30pm Chapel of the Ascension, University of Chichester Tickets £5 / £3 concessions. University students and staff admitted free of charge on presentation of a student / staff card (UCMA / WSMS) Colin Baldy’s career encompasses performing, teaching, writing and directing. As a singer, he is known principally as a character baritone, having worked for many years with companies such as Garsington Opera, Opera Restor’d, The New Savoyards, Opera Interludes and Country Opera. Such roles have included Sempronio (Lo Speziale), Don Alfonso (Cosi fan Tutte), Geronimo (Il Matrimonio Segreto), Bartolo (Il Barbiere di Siviglia) and Sorceress (Dido and Aeneas). In addition, Colin has performed much contemporary music with groups such as the London Sinfonietta, Phoenix and New Chamber Opera. One of Colin’s signature roles is the soloist in Maxwell Davies’ Eight Songs for a Mad King, a role he has previously performed with various groups in the UK and Europe. On the concert platform, he has appeared with the Britten Sinfonia, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, The Southern Camerata (under David Hill), L’Orchestra National de Picardie and L’Orchestra National de Lille. He has recently been appearing as Sir Arthur Sullivan in a new play with music by Timothy Knapman, None Shall Part Us. Colin is wellknown as a teacher of singing and was, for many years, vocal coach to the choir of New College, Oxford. He now splits his teaching between London and Italy (Milan and Umbria). He is also a visiting professor at Utah State University (USA).

Honk! Thursday 31st March 2010, 7pm Presented by year 3 Musical Theatre Students The Regis Centre, Belmont Street, Bognor Regis Box Office 01243 861010. Tickets £12, £10, £7.50 NUS Since it first hatched in 1993, Stiles & Drewe’s musical Honk! has winged its way around the world in over 4,000 productions and in many different languages. A world-wide stage sensation that has been seen by over 5 million people, Honk! has won multiple awards including the 2000 Olivier Award for Best Musical (beating the Lion King and Mamma Mia for the prize). Honk! is based on one of the world's favourite fairy-tales, Hans Christian Andersen's The Ugly Duckling. Ugly is born as a Duckling and a rather ‘ugly’ one at that, but it soon becomes clear that he is no ordinary Duck. Mocked on the farmyard, pursued by the ever-hungry Wily Cat, Ugly finds himself lost on a nearby marsh in the middle of a duck-shoot and embarks on an odyssey through the countryside, meeting a battery of colourful characters and finding himself, and love, along the way. Honk! has every poultry gag known to fowl, egged on by a cracking musical score and performed with feather-flying pluck by the Third Year University of Chichester Musical Theatre Students on their pioneering tour. “...Imagine the colour and wit of Disney’s Jungle Book, mixed with the vivacity of ‘40s Hollywood musicals, exuberantly stage, and you still only have some idea of how stonkingly brilliant this treat is...” (Time Out on the 2000 National Theatre production)

What’s on

music University Chamber Orchestra Concert Saturday 2nd April 2011, 7.30pm

Chapel of the Ascension, University of Chichester. Tickets £5 / £3 concessions. University students and staff admitted free of charge on presentation of a student / staff card (UCMA / WSMS) Jean Sibelius - Finlandia; Pyotr Tchaikovsky - Rococo Variations (Soloist Laura Ritchie); Pyotr Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 5 Conductors Crispin Ward and Christopher Slater In this programme the orchestra brings the music of Eastern European romantic tradition. Finlandia, Op 26 is a symphonic poem written in 1899 composed as a protest against increasing censorship imposed by the Russian Empire on the Finns. The piece was banned by the Russians as it inspired strong nationalist feelings and so it was often played under different names to avoid detection. The first performance of Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations was given in 1877 with the solo cellist Wilhelm Fitzenhagen and Nikolai Rubinstein conducting. It is the closest Tchaikovsky ever got to a concerto for cello and is scored and presented in a structure traditional of the 18th Century. It contains a theme and seven variations (8 in the original) almost without a break. The Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64 was composed between May and August 1888 and was first performed in St Petersburg at the Hall of Nobility on November 6th of that year with Tchaikovsky conducting. This most popular of works contains some of Tchaikovsky’s most famous and best loved themes which recur throughout the four movements. Additional concert dates The Chamber Orchestra will also be performing at Haslemere Hall, Haslemere on Friday 1st April, to reserve tickets please call the box office, 01428 642161 and on Sunday 3rd April at St Josephs Church, Havant, please call 01243 432342 to reserve tickets.

Jacques Offenbach – Orpheus in the Underworld We all know the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, as told in Greek mythology, how after she was killed, Orpheus goes into the underworld to try to get her back. He makes a pact with Pluto that Euridice can follow him out but if he were to look back then she would be lost forever. The French composer Jacques Offenbach changes everything around and makes a parody of this story, where Orpheus and Eurydice in fact cannot stand each other and she is only too happy to leave him and have some fun with Pluto, keeper of the underworld. Couple this with a group of gods bored with heaven and top god Jupiter chasing girls all the time; the famous cancan dance together with much naughtyness and debauchery make this operetta a favourite. This production, in English, is in a new modern translation by Crispin Ward, Head of Orchestral Studies.

What’s on

music Giacomo Puccini – La Bohème

The University of Chichester welcomes Music Theatre 2000 in their production of this well loved classic of romance, passion and loss. La Bohème is one of the most famously melodious and eternally popular of all operas. The carefree attitude of youth and the harsh realities of life and death are poignantly contrasted through the tender affair of Mimì and Rodolfo, from the heights of first meeting through to the tragic end.

W.A Mozart – The Magic Flute A favourite since its opening in 1791 this pantomime of baddies and goodies, gods and strange birdmen. A strange sect of priests and witches of the night battle for the hearts and minds of the young heroes and this comic, mystic musical asks some strange questions. Will Papageno ever get a girlfriend? Will Tamino ever grow up? Some of Mozart’s greatest music answers all this and more. In this modern production the new translation is by Crispin Ward, Head of Orchestral Studies.

Community Event

John Gay – The Beggar’s Opera Come and sing, dance and perform The Beggar’s Opera. We are running this as a community event with workshops and activities during the summer leading up to the performances. If you have ever wanted to design a set, make costumes, learn how to apply stage makeup, operate a spotlight, play in a pit band or sing in an opera chorus this is the event to get involved with. The Beggars Opera was an instant hit with audiences after its opening night on 29th January 1728 in London. The story of prostitutes, cut throats, villains and beggars; of hanging, poverty and complete amorality delighted the crowds more used to the high minded activities of the gods and heroes depicted in the Baroque operas of the time. The music was taken from the folk tunes of the day and in this production we have orchestrated the traditional ensemble with rock and folk instruments.
