music ‘Free Your Playing’ A Workshop by Martin Lawrence Thursday 13th October 2011, 6.30pm
Chapel of the Ascension, University of Chichester Tickets £5 / £3 concessions. University students and staff admitted free of charge on presentation of a student / staff card. (UCMA and WSMS members please refer to page 45 for further information) Over many years of being in the firing line on stages around the world – the Royal Festival Hall, Vienna Musikverein, Sydney Opera House..., Martin has been experimenting with different physical and mental approaches. In performance, the only time is now! The only time you can find out whether your approach works is right now, in the firing line in performance. In the middle of performances of the most delicate, technically challenging music, with the most famous conductors and the most discerning audiences, Martin has been thinking. In the actual moment of a solo, about the position of his left middle toe, or trying not to concentrate, or imagining that he is personally responsible for the actions of everyone in the room, or pretending to be someone else, or trying to play the piece incorrectly or not at all. Martin has tried out being as tense as possible, or so relaxed he might fall off his chair. He has prepared for a concert by doing yoga, shouting, drinking, sleeping, running, meditating... Why? Because he is trying to find a way of performing that brings the best out of himself and out of the music, to make it enjoyable and fulfilling, and he is willing to do some wacky things to see if they work. But these ideas don't just come from anywhere. Martin has studied massage, yoga, post-Jungian psychology, Alexander Technique, Taoism and Buddhism. He is interested in the body's intelligence over the mind's intelligence. Martin has come to some conclusion about what works. Come and join him for a talk, demonstrations, and experience some of his ideas. It will have a workshop element so please bring along something to play, he might be able to sort out your anxieties and tensions!

Sweet Charity follows the journey of feisty, bubbly, and naïve New York dance hall hostess, Charity Hope Valentine. Charity believes that Mr Right is just around the corner and in her inexhaustible search for love, always manages to attract Mr Wrong! It takes a chance meeting in an elevator for her to finally learn the true meaning of what it is to feel valued. Her journey takes her to flashy apartments, spending the night in a film star’s wardrobe, fairground rides and an unforgettable religious experience! This is one of Bob Fosse’s greatest directorial and choreographic achievements with over 600 performances at its original première in 1966, winning several awards and taking Broadway and subsequently Hollywood, by storm. The energy and pace never stands still and the audience is swept into the exuberant world of 1960’s dance halls, its glitterati, and its character’s personal hopes and dreams, all seen through the lens of some very unusual encounters! Sweet Charity is toe tapping, seductive and raw and is a dance musical in every sense, with a strong powerful narrative at its heart. It features some of the greatest and most memorable numbers in the musical world including; Hey, Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now and of course the iconic Rhythm of Life. Performed by the Second Year Musical Theatre students working with the professional production team who brought you, The Matchgirls, On the Town and Honk! - this is another show not to be missed!!

Haydn and his orchestra were subjects of the Prince of Esterhazy. Haydn and the court orchestra were at the Prince's summer palace in Esterhaza. The stay there had been longer than expected and most of the musicians had been forced to leave their wives back at home in Eisenstadt, so in the last movement of the symphony, Haydn subtly hinted to his patron that perhaps he might like to allow the musicians to return home; during the final adagio each musician stops playing, snuffs out the candle on his music stand, and leaves in turn, so that at the end, there are just two violins left. Prince Esterhazy seems to have understood the message: the court returned to Eisenstadt the day following the performance. Also being performed on Sunday 27th November, 7.30pm St Joseph Church, Havant. Tickets may be pre-ordered on 01243 432342

The Chapel Organ The organ hanging on the Chapel’s west wall looks very much part of the fabric of the 1960s building, but its pipework is actually much older. When the original Bishop Otter Chapel was erected in the mid nineteenth century, J W Walker installed a small pipe organ, subsequently enlarged when the old chapel was itself extended to accommodate a growing population of students. The instrument was moved to the current chapel by Walkers and substantially remodelled as an extension organ – unusually large with six ranks – where its excellent elevated position compensated acoustically for its tonal limitations. Some ten years ago the 1960s electronics began to show their age and the console from which the organ was played became increasingly unreliable. What was essentially a very small organ could also not hope to support the musical needs of a rapidly growing music department, now offering the highest standards of cathedral singing and oratorio performance, as well as the teaching of undergraduate organ students. The Makin Organ Company have now produced a solution which retains the integrity of Walker’s mid-twentieth century scheme, combining a new detached console with additional digital resources to produce a much larger and more capable instrument. Each digital stop is sampled (each note individually recorded from life) and has been selected from some of the most beautiful examples of Willis, Harrison and Cavaillé-Col organ building. The result is a scheme which mirrors an imagined history for the period from around 1920 to the present day, showing the evolution of a Victorian instrument through succeeding rebuilds. The university is grateful to the Bishop Otter Trust whose financial support has made this exciting project possible.
