Supporting Access into Higher Education

Learner Progression Framework (LPF) For many generations, from our foundations as a teaching establishment in 1839 through to a ‘modern university’, the University of Chichester has been dedicated to supporting and encouraging students from diverse backgrounds. In line with this tradition, today’s Widening Participation Team at the University of Chichester is dedicated to supporting schools to guide their students through the myriad of choices and decisions en route to university. A dovetailed approach to widening participation outreach work complements existing in school provision which is essential to maximise the partnership. Annual monitoring meetings with partner schools align our Learner Progression Framework with our target schools’ curriculum and timetabling pressures enabling every year group has access to the age appropriate aspiration/attainment raising opportunities. Supported by committed and inspirational student ambassadors we are committed to raising aspirations through our LPF from the ‘Moving Forward’ primary project to our ‘Uni Ready’ day with Year 13 students. This leaflet summarises our targeted approach through our innovative programme and our dedication to supporting access to higher education.

‘Moving Forward’ Primary Project Programme, LPF: Year 6 In response to detailed evidence highlighting the transition age from primary to secondary stage education as pivotal to raising future aspirations we have devised our innovative ‘Moving Forward’ programme.

By raising awareness and aspirations at a crucial time in a student’s development we provide a springboard into the range of activities in the LPF through successive years. Often a child’s first experience of university the four interventions, both on and off campus, engage students, parents and teachers with the concepts of progression to further and higher education. Visit 1 – In School Students work with Student Ambassadors on a range of activities that introduce the concept of university and progression pathways. Visit 2 – On Campus In teams and working with Student Ambassadors, students explore the campus through a treasure hunt activity and play the ‘Star Student’ game.

The ‘Star Student’ game is an innovative giant floor game that has been developed by Northumbria University specifically for students on their transition between primary and secondary education. The game introduces the concept of further and higher education in a fun and interactive way. Visit 3 – In School Following on from the campus visit, Student Ambassadors return to school to work with students on activities looking at skills, hobbies and interests and courses available at degree level. Visit 4 – Mini Graduation Evening with Parents/Carers The mini graduation evening gives an opportunity for teachers, parents, carers and students to celebrate their success throughout the programme. The finale is a graduation ceremony where students are presented with a Star Student Graduation Certificate.
