Student Support Services

Academic Skills Service Advice and support with academic skills is available to all students. Weekly open access study workshops are advertised on Portia and student notice boards. Areas covered include planning and writing essays, note-taking, revision and presentation skills. Careers and Jobshop Careers and Jobshop can advise and support students at all stages in their studies to develop, research and plan their career choices. Guidance is offered throughout the year to enhance job-hunting, CV writing, interview and decision making skills. Careers advice is available on both campuses. The Jobshop provides online information about part-time and temporary vacancies for students who are looking for paid work during their course. Chaplaincy The Chaplaincy is here for the benefit of all students and staff. It's an open space - it's a space for those with a faith who want to celebrate it as well as for those with their doubts who want to question it. Counselling Service

Student Adviser

The confidential Counselling Service is available to all students. Counselling can help with personal and emotional difficulties that impact on your academic work or university life in general. Disability and Dyslexia Service The Disability Team provides a range of support to students with disabilities, continuing health conditions, mental health conditions and specific learning difficulties (including dyslexia, dyspraxia and dysgraphia). Specialist support is available for students who have a visual or hearing impairment. Student Health The Nurse Health Advisers offer support with a wide variety of health concerns. They also work closely with local GPs and other medical professionals to support students regarding the management of more serious conditions. Student Money Advice Student Money Advice provides assistance and advice for students who have financial difficulties. The Access to Leaning Fund (ALF) provides discretionary financial assistance to help students access and remain in higher education. Mental Health

Volunteering

The Mental Health Adviser promotes mental health and wellbeing. Support and advice are available if you are experiencing mental health problems such as stress, trouble with sleeping, depression or drug problems. The service is easily accessible and confidential. The volunteering service supports students and staff who want to make a difference in their local community. Portia Portia is the University's web-based portal and is the key information source and formal communication channel for all students and staff. Portia includes access to your transcripts / timetables and personal details via SONAR (see SONAR section).

Academic Quality and Standards Unit Where students find they are experiencing circumstances which may affect their performance or wish to initiate an appeal regarding their results, the Academic Standards Unit can advise and explain the regulations and processes involved. Commitment Charter The University Commitment Charter articulates high level statements of commitment on the relationship between the University and the student. These describe what you can expect from the University and, in turn, what is expected of you. The Charter signposts the relevant policies, procedures and regulations you need to be aware of as a student. The Commitment Charter is available on Portia via the Student Handbook and Uni Services tab.

Online Handbook The Online Student Handbook provides information on, and links to, the full range of University services, facilities, regulations and policies. You’ll find everything you need here from car parking to catering; module selection to mitigating circumstances and from council tax to campus cards. Access the Online Student Handbook directly from Portia or via the University web pages on www.chi.ac.uk/studenthandbook (please note, the Portia version contains full links within the University Portal some of which are not available through the external website).

Moodle Moodle is the virtual learning environment for the University. Your lecturer may use this in many different ways to help your learning, for example the use of online video clips, discussion boards, online work submission, online quizzes and surveys. You can access Moodle via the channel on the home page of Portia.

SONAR The Student On-line Academic Record (SONAR) is a tool which puts you in control of your own student record and provides you with essential information. SONAR is accessed through Portia and enables students to view their timetables (including exam timetables) and results. Students can also access SONAR to update their personal details to ensure we have up-to-date information about you at all times. SONAR also enables students to re-register online as they progress through their course.

How to find us Student Support Services Bishop Otter campus New hall New Hall is located next to the Chapel and close to the Dinning Hall. Access all Student Support Services on the ground floor of New Hall. Most services are concentrated in the west wing while the Health Centre is in the middle of the building on the ground floor.

Students’ Union The Students’ Union is a democratic, membership led organisation run by students for students. The SU provides collective and individual representation, clubs, societies, social provision, support, information and entertainment. The SU has bars on both sites (ZeeBar at BOC and The Mack at BRC) and a shop (Refuel) at Chichester selling a range of supplies including snacks, stationery and clothing.
