The Basic e-Courses Development and Delivery Project at the Community College in Dammam – eLearning Ecosystem development
This is a capstone project led by the Community College as a partial fulfillment of the development plan in the program of (Female eLearning Pioneers in Saudi Universities for The Year 2015) (First Stage-Leading Track) presented by Dr.Muneerah B. Almahasheer. • An e-Course will be developed for each and every course offered by the college. • Faculty members will participate in “Knowledge and Skills Development” activities to recognize the standards for e-course design. Work will be driven by these standards, and faculty members will have an organized official training. • The developed courses will be updated regularly.

eLearning at UoD : The current Status
eLearning at UD is on the move! Colleges, departments, and faculty at UoD are embracing eLearning as a new dynamic lifestyle for teaching and learning! With a little help from the eLearning Deanship, things are on the move, and faculty members will be at the heart of this change.
There are three types of courses at UoD (from the perspective of learning delivery): 1- Basic courses: This is called the “Basic eLearning. Each course under this category will use eLearning tools to facilitate and support the learning process. Mainly, the Learning Management System in use, Blackboard. Students will be using the course site, but still attend 100% of the Face to Face (F2F) lectures. 2- Blended courses: Online and F2F components are blended to form a complete course. Also, sometime it's called Hybrid. In Blended courses part of the F2F lectures, or meetings, is replaced with online activities. 3- Full courses: In this level, all course activities take place online. Some institutions, however, require some F2F time, especially for orientation and exams. Our focus in this project is on the Basic level and we will discuss in details the requirements of an e-course. 6

The Phases of the Basic e-Courses Development and Delivery Project at the Community College in Dammam
Phases Details Phase 1: Preparation and Databases A. At this stage, two databases are created. One about all the instructors’ information, such as their names, email addresses and contact information, and the courses they teach. The other database covers all courses and their information, such as the course name, course ID, course status in this semester, who teaches this course, and who is the course coordinator and assistants if any. These databases should be updated every new semester to add, delete or edit the current course and faculty information. The time period for this stage was one week and was completed within the planned time frame. B. At the second stage, ten courses are selected as “Course Master to be developed with the consideration of developing all current courses. This is to empower each faculty member with the required space and time to develop his/her course within the Quality Matters Program Templates as the approved quality standards by the eLearning and Distance Learning Deanship at UoD. The 10 courses are:

Phase 2: Developing the e-Course Developing the e-course stage focuses on the actual building of the e-course and uses Blackboard as the Learning Management System. To achieve this goal all faculty members were enrolled in it as students to learn the basics of building an e-course. It has started with creating a new virtual course “Basic e-Courses Development and Delivery Project platform” and faculty were divided into two groups: A- Ten faculty members have worked on preparing a “Course Master” to be the ideal e-Course that would be generated as basic course model. B- As mentioned earlier, one course was assigned for each and every faculty member to reassure the quality standards of building an e-course within the time frame. During the virtual e-course workshops, participants have learned about the e-course project and the importance of their role in it, to win their engagement and commitment. The course has been divided into units. After each unit participants were encouraged to build and create new e-course components within their courses. To assure course delivery quality, a Lesson Roadmap interface has been
19
established. The e-course is built to enable students to realize the learning objectives and outcomes and to find all needed material and assignments increasing the e-course interactivity. Even though the starting official date of this stage was May 7th, preparations have started before that with several workshops on the Basics of Blackboard. The other workshops have supervised the building of e-courses.

Phase 3: e-Course Delivery The e-Course delivery phase was parallel with the development phase. The goal of this stage is to enable students to use and to interact with the developed e-courses. Quizzes were given before and after the official stage beginning date. Facilitators, who didn’t give quizzes via Blackboard, have been advised to create one for students’ practice. Also some new Discussion Board topics were added for students’ discussions and exchanging opinions. Although the delivery time was shorter than it is supposed to be, students’ interactions were beyond expectations. They have engaged in the quizzes, tasks, and discussion boards.

Phase 4: Evaluation This is a continuous phase to measure the facilitators’ e-course building skills and the project over all progress; therefore, Several Gap Assessment measurements took place. After each gap assessment, facilitators have received feedback on their work and some suggestions to improve their e-courses.

Results At the present time, Quality and interactive e-courses are essentials in the learning pedagogy. Throughout this project, we did not only focus on the quality of the e-Course, but we have also planned to increase eLearning awareness and practices which will preserve the efforts of Developing a Course Master in accordance with sustaining teaching excellence. Consequently, faculty members will be able to create the rest of their courses in the coming academic year with minimum help. Even though, the project time limitation was challenging, the enrolled group were active and effective during all project stages. They were optimistic and positive and this did not only help to build the e-course but also to motivate the students’ encouraging reaction and interaction. Some faculty members were eager to develop their e-courses within the selected 10 Course Master Project which increased the number of e-Courses into 14 instead of 10. This study proved the readiness of the college for the e-Courses Development and Delivery Project for all courses in the coming academic year 2016-2017

Challenges and Recommendation This project is designed to cover the existing male and female faculty members and to develop the current semester courses within a specific template approved by the deanship of eLearning and distance Learning as part of the “eLearning Pioneers Ecosystem Project by Dr. Muneerah Almahasheer. The following recommendations are to ensure the sustainability of the results of this project that aligns with the college objectives and the deanship strategic goals.

Future plans include the training of new faculty members (Male & female) who are expected to join the college within the new academic year (2016 -2015). We recommend other stimulating workshops to be conducted regularly for all instructors who feel that they need help or development regarding the LMS, Mobile and Social Media, hybrid eLearning and eLearning tools. Time limitation was a critical matter in this project since it progressed in accordance with the progress in the “eLearning Female pioneers, almost by the mid of the academic year. However, future plans will ensure the development and delivery phases of all e-courses from the beginning of the semester, especially that this project succeeded in training %95.7 of the college faculty to the e-course project. The target of this project is to create 10 Model courses at the Basic Level and due to the faculty enthusiastic participation, we succeeded in developing 14 courses which is almost %140 of our target goal. Instructors needed help with the quality of their learning objectives. Some workshops regarding the quality of the course material will be are recommended especially with the learning objectives and the courses outcomes. Transfer some courses to the blended level courses by the second semester of the academic year 2016/2015.
