YEARS OF PIONEERING FUTURES

On our 125th anniversary we look back to our past to inform our future and invite you to celebrate this momentous occasion and our incredible achievements with us.

In 1898, our foundation stone was laid by John Passmore Edwards – a Victorian philanthropist who believed in bringing education to all; the working-class community, young women, and anyone who was once excluded from learning opportunities. A lot may have changed in the last 125 years, but our commitment to providing practical careers-first education in the east London community has remained unwavering.

We’ve survived a devastating fire and two world wars, inspired our students to make incredible changes in the world, undertaken ground-breaking research, and revolutionised our curriculum. Throughout the last 125 years, our alumni and academics have set a powerful example to future generations whilst giving back to their local communities. As an inclusive university we remain committed to helping anyone achieve their career dreams and ambitions.

“Through the years of studying at UEL, I developed new ideas, and it encouraged me to have a unique voice, experiment, and express myself.”

Hugues was always passionate about drawing and was inspired to study graphic design and illustration at the University of East London. The creative industries are constantly shifting and to ensure our students are prepared for employment we encourage collaboration with other students and industry professionals. Exploring different areas of interest gives valuable insight into career paths.

As the course progressed, Hugues developed a keen interest in photography which eventually led him to pursue a career in this field.

Hugues is now an activist and photographer covering events such as the Black Lives Matter movement, sports, and portraits.

‘One of my favourite aspects of UEL were the lecturers. Each one was so different and opened my eyes to so many perspectives and ideas.’

The University of East London is diverse and inclusive - as a student with a disability I am supported through my studies and am learning so much to benefit my future career. I want to change perceptions and show deaf children that anything is possible for their future.

WHAT GOOD IS THE FUTURE, IF IT’S NOT FOR EVERYONE?

WE BELIEVE THAT THE JOBS OF THE FUTURE SHOULD BE OPEN TO ANYONE WHO HAS THE PASSION TO SUCCEED – WE’RE HERE TO GIVE YOU THE SKILLS TO GET THERE.
