The people need the paintings - and the paintings need the people.

The rock art of La Lindosa is protected by the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History as a local, national and international treasure. Local people play an especially vital role in protecting this unique heritage, in the face of the same dangers which threaten the Colombian Amazon more widely. It is hoped that this book will help to support this essential work of conservation and protection.

The importance of these paintings goes far beyond their artistic value. They are a repository of the irreplaceable knowledge and culture of Amazonian people, foundations of a rich and ancient relationship with the natural world stretching back over 13,000 years. Indigenous people, together with their ways of life and understanding of ecology, are actively threatened by destructive human activities - but their culture and expertise in managing the land and its resources are needed for the survival of the enormous biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest and, in turn, for the future of humanity itself. The world needs to hear the message of the La Lindosa paintings, and to learn from them a very different attitude to nature than the Western model of dominance and exploitation. We urgently need to conserve our planet’s biodiversity, which requires not only saving endangered species and ecosystems but also valuing and preserving the cultures, religions and mythologies which have developed amongst those species and habitats, know them intimately, and rely on them for survival.

La gente necesita las pinturas, y las pinturas necesitan a la gente.

El arte rupestre de La Lindosa está protegido por el Instituto Colombiano de Antropología e Historia como un tesoro local, nacional e internacional. De frente a los peligros que amenazan a la Amazonia colombiana, las comunidades locales desempeñan un papel crucial en la protección de este patrimonio único. Esperamos que este libro sea una contribución que apoye esta labor esencial de conservación y protección.

La importancia de estas pinturas va mucho más allá de su valor artístico. Son un archivo del conocimiento y la cultura irremplazables de los pueblos amazónicos, los pilares de una relación rica y de largo plazo con el mundo natural que se remonta a más de 13.000 años. Los pueblos indígenas, junto con sus formas de vida y su comprensión de la ecología, están fuertemente amenazados por las actividades humanas contemporaneas, pero su cultura y su experiencia en la gestión de la tierra y sus recursos son escenciales para la supervivencia de la enorme biodiversidad de la selva amazónica y, a su vez, para el futuro de la propia humanidad. El mundo necesita escuchar el mensaje de las pinturas de La Lindosa, y aprender de ellas una actitud hacia la naturaleza muy diferente al modelo occidental de dominación y explotación. Necesitamos urgentemente conservar la biodiversidad de nuestro planeta, lo que requiere no sólo salvar las especies y los ecosistemas en peligro de extinción, sino también valorar y preservar las culturas, religiones y mitologías que se han desarrollado entre esas especies y hábitats, conocerlas de manera profunda e íntima, depender de ellas para nuestra sobrevivencia.
