HURSEY CENTER The Hursey Center, a 60,000-square-foot academic building at the heart of campus, houses new, specialized, and technology-rich facilities for our growing programs in the College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture; and the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions. The placement of the Hursey Center intentionally creates a series of gathering spaces around the building and across the quad.

HARRISON LIBRARIES The Harrison Libraries provide a wide range of services and resources to all University of Hartford students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The Libraries have a variety of rooms and spaces for classes, meetings, collaboration, study, and for listening to and viewing audio-visual materials.

Hands-on curriculum that helps you succeed. In the College of Arts and Sciences, students are encouraged to develop the critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills needed for professional growth. Here, you don’t just memorize theories—you collaborate, integrate, and represent your point of view thoughtfully. Students become problem solvers and doers who can offer viable solutions. Throughout the programs, classes are small, which means students receive personal attention and support from faculty and a plethora of opportunities for handson, multi-perspective learning.

It is designed to prepare highly qualified practitioners whose primary role is to maximize learning and developmental opportunities for children.

Our new 100% online Masters of Arts in Integrated Communication program pairs critical thinking skills with the development of creative solutions. Students master the fundamentals of integrated communication and create a vision for applying them in an ever-changing media, technological, and demographic landscape. The curriculum is focused on helping students to become skilled communicators across all organization levels and media platforms who can produce fully integrated campaigns that achieve campaign objectives and goals.

Students participating in the PsyD program are prepared to become competent, self-aware, and compassionate clinical psychologists who are able to function effectively in multiple roles. As a member of the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology (NCSPP), the program endorses and subscribes to NCSPP’s resolutions and guidelines concerning standards, curriculum, and diversity in the preparation of professional psychologists. The PsyD program is accredited by the American Psychological Association.

See the World DIFFERENTLY Our low-residency Master of Fine Arts programs are designed with a flexible schedule specifically to meet the needs of practicing artists seeking the terminal degree in their discipline. Students are able to maintain active, full-time professional careers while learning from their home locations around the world. Coupling travel opportunities with in-classroom experiences, our students are exposed to art as it exists in the world. In each program, our students work with renowned practitioners in their fields and leave the program with a wonderful network of inspiration and support. M A S T E R O F F I N E A R T S I N I L L U S T R AT I O N The MFA in Illustration, directed by Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame illustrator C.F. Payne, couples intensive on-campus sessions in the summer with traveling spring and fall sessions. The program is ideal for artists looking to pursue a career in education, revitalize their creativity, or reinvent their portfolio. Working with industry-leading professionals, students advance their distinct, creative voice while refining their skills and techniques. M A S T E R O F F I N E A R T S I N P H OTO G R A P H Y The MFA in Photography, founded by Robert Lyons, is an innovative program designed for individuals with established experience in the field. The curriculum blends darkroom work, bookmaking, and history to investigate art, the documentary practice, and the photo-based book. The program couples intense on-campus sessions in the summer with traveling spring and fall sessions aimed at preparing students for work within the global market.

BRIAN LUTZ ’20, MFA ILLUSTRATION

Growing up in a suburb of Pennsylvania, drawing was his first love. Starting around five years old, Lutz never stopped. After high school, he studied Graphic Design at Pennsylvania College of Technology, Fine Art at Tyler School of Art, Temple University, and obtained his MFA in Illustration at Hartford Art School, University of Hartford. Lutz now lives and works in Connecticut, where he has had the pleasure to complete assignments for a wide variety of clients, some of which include: New York Magazine/Vulture, ProPublica, TIME, Los Angeles Times, POLITICO, Austin Monthly, Entertainment Weekly, Room Fifty, Blackwing Pencils, Toy Machine Skateboards, and Texas Monthly. His work has been recognized by American Illustration, Communication Arts, Applied Arts, 3x3 Magazine, Creative Quarterly, and Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles. In 2021, Lutz joined the faculty at the Hartford Art School as an adjunct professor teaching illustration. In 2023 he became the University of Hartford’s first recipient of the Illustration Visiting Artist Fellowship that allowed him to teach full time. When not working on freelance assignments or teaching, Lutz takes on personal projects to keep his skills sharp.


SALEEM AHMED, MFA PHOTOGRAPHY ’14

Saleem Ahmed is based in Philadelphia, but has traveled widely for his photography books rooted in India, Bolivia, and Turkey. He struggled with finding his voice as a photographer, but found it through our low-residency program experience. “When we went to Berlin for the first time, I shared a project where I finally figured out what I wanted to say. It was my first great critique, and it flipped the switch completely. That process took a long time, but it was awesome.”

Nancy Stahl is a Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame inductee, recognized as a pioneer of digital illustration. Her extensive career has spanned the advertising and editorial markets, with clients that include The New York Times, Time magazine, and the United States Postal Service, for whom she has designed dozens of postage stamps. Stahl has worked with second-year students in the program since 2007, teaching students how to incorporate the latest digital techniques into their own work.

Nicole Hughey is vice president of diversity, equity, and inclusion at SiriusXM. Nicole previously served as a senior D&I leader at both Mass General Brigham, New England’s largest health-care organization, and Travelers Insurance Company. In these roles, she played an integral part in developing and executing diversity strategies that impacted more than 75,000 and 30,000 employees.

Our MSBA program is ideal for students who are intrigued with analyzing “big data” in order to make strategic business decisions. ENGINEERING Students have two opportunities for graduate studies in engineering through a Master of Engineering (MEng) or a Master of Science (MS) in Engineering. Both programs prepare students for personal and professional growth in the field of engineering. Master of Engineering The Master of Engineering program emphasizes applied design and stresses the development of the oral, visual, and written communication skills that are necessary for individuals to advance in their careers. The program offers fundamental as well as design-oriented specialty coursework, applied mathematics, and engineering management. Master of Science in Engineering The Master of Science in Engineering is a research-oriented program that focuses on the advancement of a student’s fundamental body of knowledge in engineering while also fostering the development of design and analysis skills. Students study an area of interest as part of a graduate thesis and work towards solving a contemporary problem to become a technical expert. Students learn to conduct research more analytically and purposefully in the industry, as well as in academia, making it the ideal program for those students who wish to pursue their doctoral degree in an area within engineering. RITU SHIROYA M’22, MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE

International student Ritu Shiroya M’22 arrived in the United States from India in January of 2020 and decided to immerse herself in the new country and the beginning her academic program, a Master of Architecture. In the classroom, CETA provided Shiroya the opportunity to learn a new software specific to the architectural world. She believes it will help her stand out from the competition when it comes time to secure a job.

D UA L M E N G/ M B A PROGR AM (E2M) E2M is a unique partnership between the Barney School of Business and the College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture. This partnership provides a broader focus for engineers moving into management and leadership tracks. All University of Hartford graduate engineering degree programs are accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education and by the Board of Higher Education of the State of Connecticut. The Master of Architecture program is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). The University of Hartford's Department of Architecture offers three NAAB-accredited degree program tracks.

KIWON SOHN, PHD, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING

Kiwon Sohn has helped bring the world of robotics to the University. While he works with both undergraduate and graduate students, he gives a unique opportunity to his graduate students by letting them expand their creativity, skills, and cross-disciplinary engineering knowledge collaboratively. Beyond lectures, students are asked to apply what they learned on real robot platforms, including aerial vehicles (drones), collaborative robots (Baxter), and humanoids (human-like robots). He emphasizes students having the tools they need in our well-equipped labs to pursue much of their own research, including sensors and computers.

NURSING Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) The online DNP program prepares nurses at the highest level of nursing education providing the knowledge and skills to impact practice in senior leadership roles or as educators of future nurses. Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) The online MSN program prepares students for leadership roles in nursing through one of three concentrations: • Nursing Education • Nursing Management • Public Health Nursing R E H A B I L I TAT I O N S C I E N C E S Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) The DPT program prepares students for licensure as physical therapists. Integrated clinical experience begins early in the program. This is a three-year, full-time program that includes 32 weeks of full-time clinical experience. Master of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics (MSPO) Through our collaboration with Hanger Clinic, our MSPO program prepares professionals to design, fabricate, and fit prosthetic and orthotic devices for a wide range of clients, from pediatric to geriatric. This is a two-year, full-time program.

Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership for Social Justice (EdD) This program reflects the latest thinking and research on higher education leadership, organizational dynamics, and institutional change through the lens of diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging (DEIJB) values. It offers advanced training to mid-career adult leaders interested in shaping their postsecondary education work environments into dynamic learning communities. Master of Education in Early Childhood Education (MEd) This program offers two options: • Initial Certification • Non-Certification Master of Education in Special Education (MEd) This program offers three convenient online options: • Advanced Program • Cross-Endorsement Program • Initial Certification Program Master of Education with Montessori Concentration (MEd) This online program offers a master’s degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education with Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) training.

Transitional Master of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics (tMSPO) Through a distance-learning format, the tMSPO program enables prosthetists and orthotists to prepare for dual certification while earning a master’s degree. Students have the option to earn a stackable business certificate from the Barney School of Business. Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) The MSOT* program prepares students for licensure as occupational therapists, offering small class sizes, strong fieldwork partnerships, and research opportunities. This is a two-year, full-time program. CO N T I N U I N G E D U C AT I O N Physical Therapy Orthopedic Residency Program This 13-month hybrid residency program in orthopedic physical therapy is in partnership with Hartford HealthCare Rehabilitation Network. Residents will be educated and mentored in advanced orthopedic physical therapy. Physical Therapy Orthopedic Certificate Program This is a 12-credit certificate program in advanced orthopedic physical therapy. Each course focuses on a specific body region or specialty content area, including relevant clinical anatomy, clinical biomechanics, examination, evaluation, and intervention strategies. *The MSOT program has been granted candidacy status by ACOTE.

Mikalya is a Special Education Department Leader at Manchester High School in Manchester, Conn. She collaborated with Associate Professors Sheetal Sood and Lisa Zawilinski on a research project on incorporating arts into STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education. The group has presented its research at national conferences.

The Hartt School is a performing arts conservatory for music, dance, and theatre. At the graduate level, students are able to pursue advanced degrees in music. MASTER OF ARTS IN MUSIC This rigorous graduate program offers curricula designed to elevate student accomplishments in their pursuit of professional excellence. Music majors in the Master of Arts program may take courses from a variety of disciplines that introduce students to other fields and ways of thinking. As a final project, students have the choice of completing a thesis, recital, or lecture-recital. MASTER OF MUSIC There are a variety of majors offered within the Master of Music degree program.
