BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING

Gema Granados ’23 During her time in the nursing program, Gema Granados ’23 had the unique opportunity to see firsthand how an operating room works through the Hartford HealthCare Nursing Fellowship. Gema was placed at Midstate Medical Center in Meriden, CT. The eight-week fellowship included shadowing a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA). Gema assisted in intubating a patient before surgery and her CRNA explained the entire process for monitoring a patient’s respiratory system during the surgery. Gema was able to observe a variety of procedures, which included spinal fusions, spinal decompressions, hip replacements, shoulder replacements, knee replacements, a nasal reconstruction, a fistula creation, and robotic gallbladder removals, as well as many other general cases. Gema credits her success in the fellowship to her nursing classes, which helped her understand why patients require certain types of surgeries and what the recovery process would be afterward. She also said that her experiences in clinical placements helped her in preparing to work hands-on with the nurses.

SEEING A SURGERY AND UNDERSTANDING MY ROLE IN HELPING A PATIENT IN THEIR REHABILITATION PROCESS WILL ALLOW ME TO PROVIDE THE NECESSARY CARE TO ENSURE THEIR RECOVERY.” 4

DOCTOR OF PHYSICAL THERAPY

Matt Glassoff ’21, D’24 Honors student Matt Glassoff ’21, D’24 worked hard on his senior project—but not in a classroom or laboratory. Instead, he was out on the athletic fields working with UHart’s baseball team, conducting research to help improve the team’s batting performance. Matt is a student in the combined Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Physical Therapy program. He graduated with his Bachelor of Science in 2021 and will complete the Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program in 2024. Matt’s project investigates the relationship between players’ hip/trunk mobility and exit velocity, or how fast the ball comes off the bat, and launch angle of the ball. His research aims to find correlations between batting performance and physical factors, which the coaches can use to maximize players’ onfield results. To collect data for his project, he put the players through a baseball-specific movement screening to measure their hip and trunk mobility. Players were scored as they performed five different exercises. After their screening, each player took on-field batting practice. The exit velocity and launch angles of their hits were recorded using a motion camera system called Rapsodo. While Matt expects to work with many different patient populations in his career, he said working with athletes would be a “dream.”

THE EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE I HAVE GAINED DURING THIS PROJECT IS UNLIKE ANYTHING TAUGHT IN A CLASSROOM SETTING. BUSINESS ANALYTICS AND MANAGERIAL ECONOMICS

Karan Prajapati ’23 Karan Prajapati ’23 is an international student who traveled all the way from India to study at the University of Hartford. He is majoring in business analytics and managerial economics with a minor in data science. The Barney School of Business gave Prajapati the foundation necessary to enhance his professional skills. He is part of several clubs/organizations and is on the executive board of two clubs. The clubs include Barney Leadership Council, Sports Business Association, Asian Students Association, Q² Project, Gamma Iota Sigma, Men’s Club Soccer, and E-Sports. He distinguishes himself among other students by taking advantage of the extracurricular activities that Barney has to offer, providing him with opportunities to grow in confidence and professionalism. Prajapati worked on the CVS Healthcare learning project, including a case competition where competitors must develop innovative alternatives specific to the LGBTQ+ community in order to provide them with better access to health care. This experience was very beneficial to him as an international student. “Being an international student, I had very little knowledge of the U.S. health care system before the project. Now, I have a better understanding of health care and its five pillars.” He adds that this experience assisted him as an analytics major, as well. “This project gave me a chance to improve my data extraction skills and to put my analytics skills to practical use via software like Tableau and Excel.” Prajapati recently accepted the opportunity to intern with APS Technology in Wallingford, Connecticut. Here, he will work closely with the company’s vice president of finance and its junior financial analyst and experience learning through a professional setting.

I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MAKE AMAZING CONNECTIONS OUTSIDE OF CLASS WITH STUDENTS AND PROFESSORS FROM DIFFERENT ETHNIC GROUPS, CULTURES, AND COUNTRIES. I BELIEVE I HAVE BECOME A BETTER GLOBAL CITIZEN THANKS TO MY EXPERIENCES AT UHART.” 31

Since her hiring in 2010, Morrow has witnessed GO establish a relationship with the University of Hartford’s Hartford Art School, an alliance that began when GO’s staff began attending the University’s senior art shows. “Attending those shows was a way for us to foster a sense of community by giving students an opportunity to discuss their work,” says Morrow, now a brand director for the company. “But we also realized there was a pool of talent being developed right down the road. I wasn’t afraid of bringing on interns from the art school because of how much I respect the program.” Erin Kelly ’15 became GO’s first intern from the University of Hartford. As a senior in her final semester, she was only taking a few classes and wanted to use her free time to gain experience and build her résumé. Today, Kelly is a lead designer for GO, one of many interns who have gone on to be full-time employees for the company. Two years ago, GO formalized an intern program with the University of Hartford. Hanna Ramsey ’23 was the company’s most recent intern, and she says sharing a UHart connection with other employees has helped her feel supported. During her time with the company, she had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, including digital and print ads, social media posts, and one sheets.

I HAVE LEARNED HOW TO EFFECTIVELY COLLABORATE WITH A TEAM TO DELIVER THE BEST WORK FOR OUR CLIENTS, AND I REALLY FEEL PREPARED TO FURTHER MY CAREER AS A GRAPHIC DESIGNER.” HANNA RAMSEY ’23 | VISUAL COMMUNICATION DESIGN

SUCCESS STORIES

The Impact of a UHart Education As a University, we have been able to cultivate partnerships both regionally and internationally—giving our students the opportunity to take advantage of internships, career advancement, and lifelong connections in the industry.

Dana Brooks ’22 is attending law school at Emory University to become a criminal defense lawyer. Dana says an internship at a public defender’s office connected her with people and resources that further prepared her for her career goals. The internship included interviewing clients in lock-up, reading police reports, sitting in on hearings, and more.

“I have been given advice on taking the LSAT and on applying for law schools,” she says of the experience. “I have also learned various legal terms and procedures that will help me in my studies.” DANA BROOKS ’22 | CRIMINAL JUSTICE | SOCIOLOGY AND SPANISH MINOR | HONORS PROGRAM

“Being part of an organization that allowed me to try anything, to figure out how I might fit best in the real world was a building block for my success.” The first job Brad Cheney ’00 landed because of his experience and contacts with University of Hartford’s Student Television Network (STN) was a weekend gig with Fox 61 in Hartford the summer between his sophomore and junior year. After graduation, he went on to work for Cox Cable in Rhode Island, followed by stints with Game Creek Video and the “David Letterman Show.” Cheney joined the launch team of the MLB network before joining Fox Sports in 2014. HAWKS LANDED Each Hawk is unique and forges their own path at UHart. Some students go on to internships or graduate school, where they can continue to expand upon and apply their classroom learning. Other Hawks soar to permanent positions in the workforce where they can hone their craft and follow their aspirations. Whether it’s a traditional or alternative path, UHart’s Hawks have landed in some pretty amazing places.
