Speech and language therapists work alongside children and adults who have difficulties with speech, language, communication, feeding and/or swallowing. Through holistic assessment and management, speech and language therapists collaborate with the individual, their family and/or their carer to provide person-centred care that encompasses health, wellbeing, participation and quality of life. Speech and language therapists work with neonates, babies, infants, children, young people, the elderly and those who may require palliative care and/or are approaching the end of life. Through clinical and theoretical themes you’ll have the opportunity to develop interdisciplinary knowledge and the core capabilities to undertake holistic assessment and management of individuals across the lifespan with a range of speech and language therapy related difficulties. The course has been developed alongside service users and carers who will be involved in your teaching and learning experience throughout the duration of your studies. The content will reflect contemporary issues including mental capacity, ethical feeding dilemmas, palliative/end of life care and telehealth. There will be a collaborative and interdisciplinary focus where you’ll study some modules with students from other healthcare professions.

Placements

Throughout the three years you’ll have the opportunity to acquire clinical and professional competencies through participation in a range of practice-based experiences. This will involve paediatric and adult services across health, social and/or third sector care settings which may also include Telehealth and Teletherapy Practice.

Your future

Career opportunities for speech and language therapists could include working in the NHS, education settings, independent practice, charities and medicolegal firms, including overseas/international locations. Alternatively, there is the option to specialise in a particular area and/or undertake a qualification in advanced clinical practice, as well as the opportunity to undertake research or work in leadership, management and higher education settings.
