Your course

Medical Engineers play a vital role in the healthcare sector from maintaining, developing, and improving the components in medical instruments, to identifying the best materials to use in prosthetics or joint replacements. So if you’re looking for a rewarding career that really makes a difference to people’s lives this course could be for you.

In our Mechanical Engineering subject area, all our degree programmes share the same first year of study, you’ll cover the fundamentals of mechanical and electronic engineering, so you’re confident in the basics. You’ll learn the necessities but from a healthcare perspective, learning about mechatronics and robotics.

Then in your second year we’ll introduce you to anatomy, specifically gait analysis, which is the study of joint biomechanics and the movement of the legs and feet during walking and running. You’ll look at material properties, learning how materials are selected to operate in the challenging environment of the human body. You’ll also learn how medical imaging technologies work, with hands on experience of X-Ray machines, CT scans and Ultrasonic technologies, which brings together both electronic and mechanical engineering.

Human disease and injury will be covered in the final year, we’ll get you thinking about the consequences and potential diagnosis options. You’ll also look at the range of individualised medical devices, and their mechanical design techniques, which includes 3D printing solutions.

Your future

During your studies you have the chance to take a placement after your second year. You could work in the industry and put what you’ve learnt into practice. We’ll also give you the opportunity to join our student teams who take part in national events like the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Formula Student, Railway Challenge, and Unmanned Aircraft Systems Challenge competitions (or comparable design and build competitions). During your first and second year you’ll take part in our initiative called EnABLE (Engineering in an Activity Based Learning Environment). This will give you the opportunity to work together in small teams solving real Medical Engineering problems and testing your solution against other groups in a supportive and friendly competitive environment. Careers you could consider after completing your degree could be a medical device specialist, medicines and healthcare regulatory official, manufacturing engineer, or a bioengineer, to name a few.

Entry requirements: Offers will be made in the region of BBB-BBC inc. Maths A Level and one other Science or Technology subject*/DDM-DMM in Engineering** or Science or Technology plus Maths A Level/120-112***/Access to HE Diploma with 45 Level 3 Credits at Merit or above in relevant Science or Technology subjects

Entry requirements: AAB*/DDD in Engineering** or Science or Technology plus Maths A Level/136***

*Science and Technology subjects accepted: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Further and Additional Mathematics, Computer Science, Design and Technology: Product Design or Statistics.
