Biology (Molecular and Cellular)/ Biology (Molecular and Cellular) with Research PlacementBSc(Hons)
Your course From developing effective vaccines to bringing about advances in DNA forensics, molecular and cellular biology has been behind many modern scientific breakthroughs.
These courses provide a well-rounded introduction to biological sciences. Covering topics across biochemistry, genomics and cell biology, you’ll have the chance to build your understanding of the molecular explanations for life processes. As you progress, you’ll delve deeper into subjects you’re interested in by choosing from a list of optional modules.
You’ll be taught by academics with doctoral-level with expertise in their subject areas through a combination of lectures, tutorials and practicals in our modern labs.
In your third year, we’ll give you the opportunity to undertake a placement in industry or, if you choose Biology (Molecular and Cellular) with Research Placement BSc(Hons), a supervised research placement. It’s all designed to help you put theory into practice and gain valuable experience to boost your employability once you graduate.
Example modules
• Molecular and Cellular Biology • Biochemistry • Research Skills • Mechanisms and Pathology of Cancer and other Chronic Diseases
Your future Graduates from our Biological Sciences courses can consider a wide range of career options in areas such as medical research, the NHS, molecular sciences, medical genetics and counselling, pharmaceuticals, developing scientific patents, medical sales or marketing, medical writing and teaching.
Previous graduates from our courses in this subject area of Biological Sciences have gone on to work in roles such as:
• Microbbiologist at CREH Ltd, • Biomedical Scientist at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundations Trust, • Research Assistant at Leeds Institute of Cardiovasular and Metatbolic Medicine, • Laboratory Analyst at ALS Environmental Ltd, • Healthcare Scientist at Public Health England. ***

Your course On our Biomedical Science BSc(Hons) degree course, you’ll practise the skills relevant to working in a clinical laboratory. The course will explore key subject areas such as blood science, anatomy, physiology and pathology, preparing you for a range of careers in healthcare including diagnostics and clinical research. By delivering a curriculum that is relevant to the needs of society, this degree will also provide opportunities for employment in other areas such as teaching, government agencies, pharmaceutical and biotech-industries.
Society is coming to terms with the issues associated with an ageing population. Underpinning the study of common diseases such as dementia, diabetes and cancer is biomedicine.
On this Biomedicine BSc(Hons) course, you’ll have the chance to study how bodily functions at a cellular, tissue and whole body level change during these chronic diseases, and consider how biomedicine can assist with healthy ageing. You’ll also have the opportunity to study the biology of common and rare genetic disorders as well as infectious diseases.
On both courses you’ll be supported by academics with doctoral-level expertise and learn through lectures and tutorials, and be able to acquire hands-on experience using modern scientific instruments during lab sessions.
The third year is your choice to complete an optional placement year, where you’ll have the opportunity to see your knowledge in action and pick up valuable skills that could boost your employability and set you up for a successful future career.
Example modules • Molecular and Cellular Biology • Research Skills • Physiology • Immunology and Infection
