Postgraduate study

We accept a wide range of international qualifications and when you apply for a place. Your application will be examined and an offer will be made to you subject to meeting University entry requirements. This will be confirmed by email and on MyHud, which is your personal applicant portal. You will be provided with full details for MyHud once you submit your application.

English Language Skills

For students whose first language is not English, the University requires a recognised qualification in English language before you can begin the course.

Acceptable English Language qualifications

The qualification the University normally requires is an IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in all bands) in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent. Please note that some courses require a higher level of English, therefore please see the specific course details at courses.hud.ac.uk

What if I don’t meet these entry requirements?

We appreciate that when you submit your application you may not have taken an English Language test, or if you have, it may not be to the level we require. The University therefore provides a wide range of Pre-Sessional English Programmes, which will prepare you for your degree studies, and enable you to meet the language requirements for your chosen degree. Please see pages 50-51 of this prospectus or visit hud.ac.uk/international

Portfolio

If you are applying for an Art, Design and Architecture degree, you must submit a portfolio to demonstrate your artistic ability. You must also provide a portfolio/audition if you are applying for a Music degree to demonstrate your performance or musical ability. You can still apply without a portfolio/audition, however this will be added as a condition of the offer.

ATAS

Make an application

Postgraduate students may have to obtain ‘ATAS Clearance’ before applying for a student visa. This will be dependent on the subject area you are studying. If required, ATAS clearance will be made a condition of your offer and full details will be included with your offer. Further details can be found at gov.uk/guidance/find-out-

if-you-require-an-atas-certificate

Interviews

Some degree programmes require an online interview with the Admissions Tutor. If this is required, it will be stated as a condition of your offer and the Admissions Tutor will contact you to arrange this. Drama programmes may also require an audition as part of the interview.

Pre-Sessional English Programmes

These courses run between 4 weeks and 12 weeks depending on your prior level of English, and there are two sets of intakes that allow for degree start dates in September or January. If you wish to study one of our Pre-Sessional English Programmes, you do not need to sumit an additional application. Please contact us to request a Pre-Sessional English course, providing a copy of your IELTS certificate (or other acceptable English qualification as stated on our web pages) hud.ac/pre-sessional-english

International Study Centre (ISC)

The centre is situated at the heart of the Huddersfield town centre campus where ISC students can enjoy the same facilities and accommodation as other students at the University. On successful completion of your preparation programme and achieving the required grades, you will progress automatically onto your chosen degree course at the University of Huddersfield without having to apply again. In most cases, you will be able to apply for a student visa that will cover both programmes.

The Graduate Route

This new graduate immigration route opened to graduates on 1 July 2021. It allows international students to remain in the UK to either work or look for work for two years (three years for PhD students) after they have completed their course without the need to be sponsored by an employer. All international students who have successfully completed a degree course who have a Student (or Tier 4) visa that is current at the time of application will be able to apply.
