Garrett Demaree, a civil engineering student from Vevay, Ind., feels a calling to do what engineers do best - work to understand and solve some of society’s most complex issues. In December 2021, after a catastrophic EF4 tornado moved across Western Kentucky, Garrett was offered the opportunity to conduct research related to the aftermath.
He didn’t hesitate.
“My heart went out to those whose lives were affected by this tornado and were changed forever,” Garrett said.
“I had been working as an undergraduate researcher since Fall 2020. As a researcher, it’s our job to collect
and study the valuable information from devastating events so we can better prepare for and respond in the future.”
Garrett quickly became an integral member of a collaborative multi-university research team that took their work out of the classroom and into the community. The goal of the project was twofold: how were some buildings - many well over 100 years old - able to survive with only moderate damage while newly constructed buildings nearby were completely destroyed and how quickly is the community able to respond to this event?
ONE OF EIGHT INSTITUTIONS IN THE COUNTRY
ONE EIGHT INSTITUTIONS
WITH THE FULL COMPLEMENT OF LIBERAL ARTS, ENGINEERING, PROFESSIONAL, AGRICULTURAL AND MEDICAL COLLEGES AND DISCIPLINES ON ONE CONTIGUOUS CAMPUS
“We completed an extensive door-to-door assessment throughout the community, allowing us to upload geotagged photos, notes and video,” Garrett explained. The team is reviewing the extensive amount of data collected. But one thing is certain - the information will be studied and utilized by various disciplines for multiple applications.
Now Garrett is encouraging all undergraduate students to take advantage of research opportunities.
“
My UK mentors and professors have been extremely supportive of my research goals and have helped me to succeed. The depth of knowledge I have gained through this experience is unlike anything you can learn in the classroom.
THE MOMENT WHEN CURIOSITY CURIOSITY MEET EXPERTISE
As a two-time UK graduate, Olivia Davis, associate director of the Von Allmen School of Accountancy and lecturer, still cannot believe she gets to make the kind of impact on her students that her professors made on her.
“My teaching philosophy is to be there - where the students are - understand, get to know them so I can deliver what each of them needs,” Professor Davis said. “I don’t believe that there is one right answer, and I believe that there isn’t one right answer because everyone is different.”
What does every student have in common? The ability to make an impact.
and and
THE MOMENT WHEN EXPERTISE
“What I want my students to understand is that they have a lot of power to change lives of not just them and their families, but of their communities. Taking what students learn in my class and helping them see the connection to how they can impact other people is what I hope motivates them to push through difficult or boring or whatever challenges they face to get that outcome on the other side.”

“ I wanted to go to a place where I could study with a fantastic teacher
- Director Everett McCorvey - and also do fully staged shows as an undergraduate student. At UK, I found a home where I could do both music education and work with the choral education folks and all the wonderful students and faculty there and do fully fledged operas.
I find that it’s so important to support the people that have supported me and to give back to help the next generation of upcoming artists and world changers.”

At UK, we don’t just say we put students first in everything we do – we put our words into action. In the last 12 years alone, we’ve spent $4.4 billion transforming campus to have everything you’ll need to do all the things you never thought you could.
When you walk in your residence hall and first meet your roommate or meet up with your study group at the Gatton Student Center, you’re walking into spaces that have been carefully crafted with your success in mind.
Where the UK community hangs out, lives and studies on campus are some of the newest facilities in the country and are full of all the amenities - comfy furniture, tons of spaces to charge all your devices and great snack and dining options.
Some of the newest and most modern residence halls in the Southeastern Conference – yeah, we have those, too.
They’re also home to the student organizations and clubs where acquaintances become family and the resources and support services to help you academically, socially, financially and your mental health and well-being.
The University of Kentucky is a community, a family here to support you every step of the way.

“ The University of Kentucky is the best place in the world. I have never felt more at home away from home. I’ve met so many people. I’ve made so many connections. I’ve done things that I never thought I would. I’ve made the best friendships of my life here, as cliche as that sounds. The most genuine friendships happen because everyone is growing. Here, we’re all growing together and those bonds are really special. I would have never gotten the opportunity to do any of the things I’ve done or meet any of these people if I didn’t come to UK.

For Najiya Clayborn, she knew bigger was better for her.
“I went to a big high school, so coming to a big university wasn’t a big shift or big change. I like what bigger universities have to offermore students, more room for connections, more friends to make,” Najiya said.
The starting point for those friendships for Najiya - living on campus.
“The University of Kentucky overall is a beautiful place to live and be a part of. Living on campus gives you way more access to events and other opportunities. You literally can just wake up, get dressed and there’s an event or class going on right inside your hall,” she said.
Najiya formed a close bond with other students she met as part of the Creative Arts living learning program.
“The Creative Arts LLP is where I found my community. There’s constantly new things to do and learn - visual arts, singing, dancing, getting perspectives from visiting artists or our faculty and staff within the College of Fine Arts. My LLP also gives me people to have new experiences with; we are encouraged to go to the orchestra or a choir performance or dance recital together. Beyond the classroom, we gain interpersonal skills that prepare us for life after college.”
“ I don’t have an exact favorite thing or place at UK because there’s always something to do here on campus. If you just walk around, you’ll almost always see an event going on. I just grab a friend and am like, ‘hey, come on, let’s do this.’ That is what’s best about being on campus - there’s always something fun to do.Najiya Najiya Clayborn, Louisville, Kentucky, College of Fine Arts

I love how convenient and close the residence halls are to everything on campus. Our residence halls have study rooms as well. So, if I want to change my environment, have a change of scenery, I can walk down the hall to a study room, bring some friends along and have our study group right there. They’re beautifully decorated and comfortable for us to enjoy. ”

Honestly, a game day at UK gives me a rush like no other. It’s so crazy how students show up and show out for our sports here - football, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, baseball - we’re here to support all of our teams. It starts day one at UK at Big Blue U, a special event for new students during K Week. At Big Blue U, we learn game day chants, the fight song and meet most of the coaches and teams who wear Kentucky across their jerseys. We officially become part of Big Blue Nation, the most passionate fanbase in all of college athletics . ”

Getting involved in a student organization is not just fun and games (though they are a lot of fun); it’s about making you happier and more successful. Research shows that students who are involved with a student organization are more connected to their university and perform better in the classroom. And with more than 600 student organizations, there’s an activity for you at UK.
Join an intramural team, even if you’re not an athlete. Give back through organizations like DanceBlue, a 24-hour no sitting, no sleeping dance marathon to raise money for UK’s Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic. Or take part in academic, social, religious, cultural, arts, media, political, activism, Greek life or other special interest groups to name a few.
Get involved - and earn some money - by getting an on-campus job. UK’s student employment team will help you find a job that works with your course schedule.

“
My biggest piece of advice that I always tell other people on campus is get yourself comfortable with being uncomfortable. There’s something here for everyone; you’re just going to have to do a little work to put
yourself out there. Once you do, it’s so worth it. It’s super easy to make connections on campus - and that makes our big campus feel small. You realize this person knows that guy and that guy knows her. Try something you’ve never done - you’ll definitely meet people and you might find a new hobby or interest that excites you!”

THE MOMENTS THAT MAKE THE MOMENTS THAT MAKE MEMORIES LEXINGTON
IT’S PRETTY EASY TO SEE WHY LEXINGTON IS A GREAT COLLEGE TOWN. Nestled in the heart of Kentucky’s Bluegrass Region, Lexington is a vibrant, friendly community of a little more than 320,000 people and has the amenities of a bustling city, wrapped in small-town charm and surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful horse farms. Our hometown has a close connection with the University and a culture that students describe as close-knit, eclectic, opportunity-rich and supportive of all things local. Lexington is also within a day’s drive of two-thirds of the country’s population, making it an ideal college location that’s not too far away from home. www.visitlex.com
I think Lexington is one of the best places to live because there’s so much going on. It’s the perfect mix of country and city life. I’m a big foodie, so you know I’m participating in whatever ‘food week’ it is - Burger, Taco, Donut - I’m there. But if that’s not your thing, we have Keeneland and sporting events and bowling alleys and movie theaters. There are great places to shop, both local stores and national chains. The Arboretum is five minutes from campus and is the perfect place for a picnic. Or hop in your car and go to some of the great hiking trails in and around Lexington. UK is so unique because of our relationship with Lexington .

“ During the last semester of college, that’s where I found what I really wanted to do. And that’s what college is all about - experiencing different things and figuring it out. I always wanted to start a podcast, but I didn’t know how to do that. UK helped me. We all come into college with a plan - thinking we’re set. But you never know what you’re
Mario Mario Maitland, ‘22 Daytona Beach, Florida College of Arts and Sciencescapable of.”
As a senior in high school, Mario Maitland, a Long Island New Yorker who grew up in Dayton Beach, Florida, was faced with an important question - what’s next?
His answer to that question was easy - the University of Kentucky.
Mario, Rio as he’s better known, grew up in a basketball rich family and always loved the University of Kentucky.
“All the stars go to UK, so I watched them on TV,” Rio said. “No matter where I was living, UK was always my team.”
Rio arrived in Lexington on a mission to discover his path and purpose at a campus filled with limitless possibilities.
“Being able to go to UK changed my perspective on life. I was literally living out my dream at one of the best universities in the world,” he said.
Not unlike many college freshmen, Rio wasn’t quite sure about his career path. Initially majoring in biology, he soon learned it wasn’t a good fit and instead decided to pursue a history degree - a major that capitalized on his love of storytelling.
During his final semester of college, Rio took Podcasting and Sound as an elective and that lit a fire within him.
Now in his second year of production, Rio is the host of the “What’s Next” podcast where he interviews intriguing people in their respective fields. His guests have ranged from music executive Stephon Dupree to professional athletes, clothing designers, physicians and more. And he’s joining RadioLex’s talk radio lineup hosting “What’s next, Kentucky.”
