All rise!

UK Law is a student-centered, supportive public law school that aspires to empower tomorrow’s leaders to rise towards their personal best and to pursue a meaningful impact on the law, the profession, and the world beyond. UK Law represents a tradition of excellence and a valuable legal education. We are a community of worldclass faculty who produce a broad range of nationally and internationally-recognized research. Our distinguished alumni and students serve their communities, the Commonwealth, and the nation with professionalism. At UK Law, we pride ourselves on providing a high quality, yet affordable, legal education that effectively prepares graduates for professional careers. This is what sets us apart and makes us UK Law.

UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY COLLEGE OF LAW The College of Law, founded in 1908 from a law program initiated at Transylvania University in 1799, was one of the nation’s first state law schools. In 1913, the college established the nation’s first law school trial practice program, and its Kentucky Law Journal is the tenth-oldest student-run law review in the nation. UK Law has been approved by the American Bar Association since 1925 and was elected to Order of the Coif, the most prestigious national legal honorary society, in 1931. Proudly celebrating more than 100 years of service, UK Law is honored to have provided legal education to many of the nation’s outstanding lawyers, judges, political leaders and businesspeople.

Right now, you are joining thousands of law school-bound students across the world who are contemplating the next chapter of their lives. A legal education opens up many paths, including opportunities beyond the traditional practice of law. For this reason, I believe there is no better time to attend law school. But what makes this place – the University of Kentucky College of Law – different? A student-centered institution with world-class, accessible faculty and a location in the heart of the Bluegrass, UK Law is a very special place.

It’s all here, and it’s waiting for you.

A small student-to-faculty ratio means students have many opportunities to develop personal relationships with their professors, which fosters a collaborative, supportive learning environment.

CLINICAL AND EXTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES UK Law’s Legal Clinic, directed by Professor and former Kentucky Public Advocate Allison Connelly (UK Law ’83), opened across the street from the college in 1997. Under the Kentucky Supreme Court’s limited practice rule, and with the supervision of the clinical director, third-year law students represent clients before state agencies and in state court proceedings. Students also interview clients, draft legal documents, file pleadings and conduct discovery. The Clinic offers an exceptional introduction to the realities of legal practice and client representation, whether choosing to pursue a career in public interest law or private practice. The Clinic is three hours of graded credit.

UK Law offers 15 externship opportunities for students to work under the guidance of practicing attorneys for academic credit. Each externship requires 100 hours of work during the semester for two pass/fail credits. No student may receive both pay and academic credit for the same work. However, if a student works more than 100 hours in an externship, he or she may be paid for the amount of work over 100 hours. Most of these externships are offered every semester including the summer session, if the externship supervisor is available and there is sufficient enrollment.

AN ACCELERATED OPPORTUNITY UK BLUE is a collaboration between the College of Arts & Sciences and UK Law to offer an accelerated Bachelor of Arts/Juris Doctor degree option. Students admitted into the program are expected to maintain a rigorous academic schedule in order to complete 90 hours and all required courses for the undergraduate major in three years (six semesters). UK BLUE students will have individualized, one-onone advising with a professional pre-law advisor in the College of Arts & Sciences to ensure appropriate course scheduling for degree completion. Students are encouraged to earn AP credit and complete dualcredit courses while in high school. Students in UK BLUE select either English, History, or Political Science as their major. Admission into UK BLUE does not guarantee admission into UK Law. At the beginning of their third year in UK BLUE, students will be required to take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and submit all application materials to the law school for review by the UK Law Admissions Committee during the regular course of the admissions process with all other applicants that year. If admitted, students will complete the required 120 credit hours and remaining course requirements for the BA during their first year at UK Law. Students will then go on to complete the requirements for the JD during their remaining two years at the law school. For more information, visit www.as.uky.edu/uk-blue-overview.

A NETWORK FOR CAREER DEVELOPMENT With employment statistics consistently exceeding national averages, UK Law is honored to connect students with career opportunities. UK Law’s Office of Career Development is a dedicated, on-site resource for law students during their employment searches. Take advantage of helpful services such as one-onone career counseling, seminars, workshops, career speakers, on-campus interviews, job postings and assistance with navigating online resources. You will also have the unique opportunity to receive career and interview advice from former practicing attorneys and UK Law graduates. The most popular choices for UK Law graduates after graduation are usually a state or federal judicial clerkship or private practice. Other graduates typically enter careers in public interest, business, government, academia, or decide to pursue further education. Many UK Law graduates begin practice in Kentucky, however others opt to pursue careers out-of-state. The Office of Career Development, in partnership with the UK Law Alumni Association, helps connect students wishing to practice elsewhere with practicing alumni.
