GO MEAN GREEN
The Mean Green entered its frst year in the American Athletic Conference in 2024 with athletes ready to step up. Whether it’s the men’s basketball team making their third straight trip to the National Invitational Tournament or our Mean Green Tennis team taking out their first ranked opponent since 2016, each and every one of our Division 1 sports teams have shown determination on and of the feld. In spring 2024, our student-athletes collectively recorded a 3.280 average GPA — the highest in athletics department history.
MODULAR FASHION
Chanjuan Chen, associate professor of fashion design, creates modular, wearable art with a purpose. Her work on 3D-printed clothing takes aim at the second-largest polluter in the world: the fashion industry. Chen’s garments are created from small pieces of fabric that you can link together and rearrange when you want to update your look.

CLEAN ENERGY FROM NUCLEAR RECYCLING ::
Dr. Haifeng Zhang, professor of mechanical engineering, is leading one of 12 research projects funded by a Department of Energy initiative to advance technologies for recycling used nuclear fuel. The clean energy created from recycling spent fuel could be enough to power more than 70 million homes.
PROTECTING MATERNAL HEALTH ::
Dr. Julia Heck, associate dean for research in the College of Health and Public Service, investigates how genetic conditions and environmental toxins, such as per- and polyfuoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water, afect maternal and child health.

Opal Lee has spent nine decades as an activist for social change and was at the forefront of the efort to make Juneteenth a national holiday. She joined President Biden the day he formally signed the designation. More recently, she was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her lifetime advocacy and received an honorary doctorate from UNT.

Neil drew on her education from UNT and her professional experience to follow her passion for user design and start her own business, Guidea. Her agency creates bespoke and innovative apps for big-name clients like Adobe, Dell and Google.
