STUDIO ART
Studio art students are challenged by accomplished faculty members to think critically and follow their creative inspiration. State-of-the-art studios provide the resources needed to learn the conceptual and hands-on processes of creating original works in drawing, painting, photography, graphic design, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture. As part of the program, students are introduced to exhibit design, portfolio preparation, resumĂŠ and grant writing, and job search strategies. All programs culminate in a senior capstone project, presented at the Senior Art Show.
Students learn in the 25,000-square-foot Ann Peppers Hall, a gathering place for students and a focal point for the visual arts on campus. Specifically designed to promote the creative process and facilitate arts education, Ann Peppers Hall features a photography studio, 3D printer, typography studio, darkroom, computer-aided design (CAD) table, and digital labs. Faculty creativity is celebrated at an annual Faculty Art Show each September.
The Art Gallery on Colton Avenue features ongoing exhibits by recognized and emerging artists in a variety of media.
CREATIVE WRITING
Students in the creative writing program learn from talented professors in the historic Hall of Letters. In this intensive undergraduate major, students concentrate on the creative process; receive a grounding in literature; and explore poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction in focused workshops.
The Redlands Review, an annual student-run literary magazine, provides opportunities for creative writing students to showcase their work and participate in the editorial process.
The Visiting Writers Series brings to campus nationally recognized writers from diverse backgrounds. These have included Marianne Boruch, winner of the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award; Laila Lalami, American Book Award winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist; and David L. Ulin, book critic for the Los Angeles Times and nonfiction author.
THEATRE ARTS
In the Theatre Arts program, students participate in a collaborative creative process, with many production and performance opportunities. Whether reading a play in class, performing a role on stage, or working behind the scenes, students are introduced to a provocative range of human experiences, passions, and ideas, guided by accomplished professors.
The Theatre Arts Building, which includes the Frederick Loewe Theatre and Glenn Wallichs Theatre, combines formal classrooms with stateof-the-art performance and design studios and workshops that facilitate intellectual and creative inquiry.
The University of Redlands is located between the cultural centers of Los Angeles and Palm Springs, offering students access to world-class theatrical productions and companies.
MUSIC
School of Music students learn to perform, interpret, and teach music in a rich learning environment that provides a broad education and intense training. With expert faculty guidance from some of the finest musicians in Southern California, both undergraduate and graduate students go beyond technical mastery to gain a sense of history, society, culture, and artistic expression.
Opportunities to perform are plentiful, with more than 200 recitals and concerts each year, including the Feast of Lights, a University of Redlands holiday tradition since 1948.
The School of Music, which has been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1945, is home to 12 ensembles, including band, choir, orchestra, jazz, percussion, and guitar.
A close relationship with the Redlands Symphony Orchestra offers opportunities to audition as an assistant, substitute, or section player.
The School of Music draws internationally known guests, such as The King’s Singers and Chanticleer, to campus to engage with students and perform.
