14 OUR FACILITIES

OUR FACILITIES We are continuing to invest in our facilities with state-of-the-art buildings and research centres. Your learning will be relevant and meaningful, so that you are ready to enter the working world with a solid understanding of the practical concepts and equipment that you will be faced with day to day. These are just a few of the fantastic facilities you could look forward to using.

PATIENT SIMULATION SUITE The University has a simulation suite for students to face real-life scenarios in a safe and supported environment. Set up just like a hospital ward, the suite contains six full body human patient simulators that mimic everything from a cold to a major heart condition.

OUR FACILITIES

The facility has been accredited as a Centre of Teaching Excellence by the North West Simulation Education Network, making Salford the first higher education institution to receive this accreditation.

15

16 OUR FACILITIES

BODMER LABORATORY The Bodmer Lab, named after Sir Walter Bodmer - the British scientist behind the mapping of the human genome, is a ÂŁ3 million facility for students studying biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry and wildlife related courses. The Bodmer Lab can hold up to 144 students at any one time and when divided into four smaller laboratories can accommodate between 36 and 44 students each. The lab gives our students the best possible experience by providing cutting edge technical equipment, including an AV system that allows lecturers to be linked visually and audibly with some or all of the interconnected labs. A network of suspended HD televisions also enables each student to see and hear the lecturer clearly from wherever they are, creating an excellent learning environment.

The Human Performance Laboratory is a state-of-the art teaching and research facility for students on our sport and exercise courses, which contains an extensive range of biomechanical and physiological equipment. A range of elite athletes have used the facility to test their performance after injuries, in order to determine if they are ready to get back on the pitch.

OUR FACILITIES

HUMAN PERFORMANCE LABORATORY

17

18 OUR FACILITIES

THE ENERGY HOUSE The Energy House is a full-scale house rebuilt inside a laboratory based within our Cockcroft building. It is designed so that research can be conducted into improving energy efficiency in homes. Within the laboratory, environmental conditions such as temperature, wind and rain can be replicated, to measure the effects quickly and accurately.

AERODYNAMICS LABORATORY

The single-seated Merlin MP520-T simulator is used to support our modules. It will give you a practical experience of aircraft design that complements traditional theory and laboratory learning, so you will be able to input your own aircraft parameters into the simulator before assessing flight characteristics.

The Elite is a fixed-base Piper PA-34 Seneca III aircraft simulator used for flight operation training. It is certified by the Civil Aviation Authority as an FNPT II-MCC multi-crew training environment. The Elite has two pilot seats, each with a full set of instrumentation, controls and visuals. As the pilot, you will see a projection of a terrain based on real geographic territory and specific airports in Europe. Our aerodynamics laboratory contains low speed and supersonic wind tunnels. Typical laboratory experiments our students carry out include determining the aerodynamic properties of an aerofoil section, and influence of wing, sweep on the lift and drag characteristics of a tapered wing section.

OUR FACILITIES

For students of aeronautical engineering, we have our very own aerodynamics laboratory and two different flight simulators, which will give you a practical experience of aircraft.

30 FINANCE AND FUNDING

FINANCE AND FUNDING HOW MUCH WILL I NEED? The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) office requires that you must provide evidence that you have sufficient funds to support yourself throughout the whole period of your studies. Without this, you will not be able to obtain a Tier 4 visa. Costs that you will need to consider: / Living costs: a minimum of £9,135* per year (maintained 28 days prior to your visa application). / Study deposit (paid before you begin your course): £4,400*. This is required before we can issue you an unconditional offer and give you your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). / Undergraduate fees: £12,300–£15,480* per year. With the exception of the School of the Built Environment accelerated courses at £17,910* per year. / Postgraduate fees: £12,600–£17,600* per year. / Currently the Immigration Health Surcharge is £150* per year. Please note all fees are correct at time of printing (September 2018). Our fees are reviewed on an annual basis and may be subject to change. Please check the relevant course page on our website for the most up to date information. For more information on living costs, please visit: www.gov.uk/tier-4-general-visa/eligibility You can choose to pay your fees in full before your course starts and save 3% of the net total, or in five equal monthly instalments. For specific course fees, please go to: www.salford.ac.uk/course-finder For further information on the Immigration Health Surcharge, please go to: www.immigration-health-surcharge. service.gov.uk/checker/type

Before moving to a new country you will have a lot to think about, so to make it easier we have created the guide below for all of the fees you will need to pay, plus information on funding options that are available

Students from the USA are eligible for a study deposit waiver if they qualify for a US Federal Study Loan. More information on this is available online: www.salford.ac.uk/moneyadvice-for-international-students

FUNDING We have a range of exclusive regional and course-based scholarships for high achieving students. Our international scholarships include the prestigious Salford International Excellence Award, that offers awards of up to £5000. For more information, visit www.salford.ac.uk/international For information on the Chevening Scholarship programme, visit: www.chevening.org/fellows

WORKING As an international student studying at degree level and above, rules set by UKVI allow you to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during any official vacation period. However, studying is a big commitment, and we therefore recommend that you only work around ten hours per week during each semester. If you are studying below degree level, you can work up to ten hours per week during term time and full-time during any official vacation period. Our on-campus recruitment agency, Unitemps, can help you find part-time work that fits around your studies and we have a full careers service that can help build your skills and get you ready for the world of work after graduating. Find out more at: www.unitemps.com

To help you understand how much you will need to budget, we’ve provided a few examples below of everyday costs

ACCOMMODATION:

BOOKS AND STATIONERY:

On-campus accommodation (run by Campus Living Villages) ranges from £89 to £148.50* per week, depending on site and room size.

New textbooks for your course can be expensive, so make sure you use the library as much as possible, or buy books second-hand to save money. The on-campus shop sells affordable stationery.

UTILITIES AND OTHER OUTGOINGS: If you are not living in campus accommodation, you’ll need to take into account the cost of bills for water, electricity, gas and internet.

FOOD AND GROCERIES: There are a range of supermarkets to suit every budget, as well as farmers markets and independent shops. Preparing fresh meals at home rather than buying pre-prepared or takeaway food will save you money. Don’t forget to budget for cleaning products and toiletries as well.

TRANSPORT: A weekly bus ticket costs about £15*, and a single ticket on the tram costs around £3.80*, depending on your destination. Manchester and the surrounding areas are also served by a number of convenient and attractive cycle routes. There are lots of tips for making your money go further: www.salford.ac.uk/money

CLOTHES AND GROOMING: Things like haircuts and winter coats need to be included in your budget. The best way to find a good deal is to shop around – there are plenty of affordable hairdressers and clothing shops in Manchester, and don’t forget to ask if they offer a student discount!

HEALTH AND FITNESS: The University gym membership costs between £13-£19* per month, depending on the facilities you choose to use. University sports teams will charge weekly membership fees, plus the cost of your kit.

LEISURE: A cinema ticket costs from £5*, and theatre tickets between £25-£70*. An evening meal at a restaurant with friends typically costs around £12-15* each, plus the cost of any drinks. There are many free events, galleries and museums in Salford and Manchester to keep you entertained on a budget though, and as a student, you are entitled to discounts in many shops, restaurants and cinemas. *All costs correct at time of printing (September 2018).

68 WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY

LOGAN MCCAGE / USA / BA (HONS) FASHION DESIGN “Words cannot express how amazing the past four months have been on my exchange programme in Salford. This has been the most effective learning experience I have ever had, and it has exceeded any expectations. I wasn’t expecting to have changed so much, and I love the person I have become. I have gained so many experiences and lifelong friendships that are absolutely priceless. The city as well as university life has allowed me to discover and grow into who I want to be and where I want to go. I found inspiration through the people as well as traveling. I found the confidence through the help of my tutors and being on my own. Most importantly, I have discovered pure joy. I have laughed, loved, and lived every minute of my time in England. Bashir Aswat, Programme Leader of Fashion, inspired me a year ago to come to Salford when he visited my university in Tennessee, and I am so glad he came. The fashion department is absolutely exceptional, and it shows through the student work as well as the confidence of the students. I want to say thank you to the University of Salford for being a partner to my university, and allowing me to have the opportunity to experience such a special journey. It has changed my life forever.”

My first year has almost come to the end, and I am looking forward to continuing my studies in the next two years and graduating as a University of Salford student.” TANUSHREE BHATTACHARJEE / INDIA / MSC PROJECT MANAGEMENT “As part of my course, I took part in the Business Innovation Project programme, working with the National Health Service (NHS). Based on my research, the NHS has implemented my recommendations on the ‘Models of Care’ to improve their services especially in the Urgent and Emergency Care services. I would definitely recommend the Business Innovation Project programme. The experience was amazing. We had a few challenges at the beginning of the project because, being from a non-medical background, it was difficult to understand things initially but then the staff were helpful and supportive. I’ve gained more confidence from working with such a big organisation with complex structure, and it has helped to improve my management skills and knowledge.” GABRIELA PINGARRÓN CÁREDENAS / SPAIN / MSC BIOTECHNOLOGY “I would advise people to come here because it’s a very good University. I’m happy because all the lecturers and all the teachers are very close to you, so they will always help you out. There are also lots of things to do like sports and clubs. I’m happy here.”

AMELIA STEPHANIE / MALAYSIA / BA (HONS) TELEVISION AND RADIO ”Our lecturers are also practitioners from BBC and ITV, so we learn from the experts.”

LIZETTE GEORGINA BRICENO VERDUZCO / MEXICO / MSC MARKETING “I chose the University of Salford because I wanted to study in Manchester which is an amazing, leading and forward-looking city. Then I looked into the MSc Marketing programme and I liked the way in which it is taught: four modules and an optional Business Innovation project where students have the opportunity to choose between doing a dissertation, an internship or a placement. In my case, I chose to do an internship because I considered that it provides the necessary skills, additional to the knowledge that you learn through classes and projects, needed to succeed in businesses. A mixture of industry, education, music and football makes Manchester a unique place with cultural diversity and easy to fall in love with. I really enjoy to walk by Deansgate, a main road through the city centre of Manchester, where I can go to the mall, indulge myself and have a nice lunch in a restaurant to taste international flavours, visit the John Rylands Library, which is an amazing Victorian neo–Gothic building, and at the end of my walk maybe meet some friends for a drink too! I will really miss the people here when I graduate. I have great tutors that have helped me through this path not just by sharing their knowledge and experience but also motivating me when I did a good job and advising me how to improve when needed. Also my new friends, great people with different backgrounds, nationalities, cultures and languages people that during the program share with me the same space, goals and time.” PATRICK CHERUIYOT / KENYA / MSC ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT “My experience of studying in the UK was personally very good and I have the chance, which I am looking forward to, to come back to Salford. There’s a lot of fun within Salford, we have Old Trafford and Manchester City nearby and we have a big shopping city. The opportunities here are endless, it’s not just learning. I played hockey at Salford and that helped me a lot to integrate when I joined the University. Within Salford there is a lot of opportunities for a new student, or any international student who is coming to Salford, to interact and to feel at home away from home.”

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY

KIN HOE CHOW / MALAYSIA / BSC PHYSIOTHERAPY “Before I arrived in the United Kingdom, I had a lot of concerns about being independent in a foreign country with different cultures or any language barrier because English is not my mother tongue language. But, that was the past. On my first day in lectures, our lecturer started an ice-breaking event and this was my opportunity to make friends with the others on my course. All my lecturers are passionate about their teaching and happy to give feedback and advice. They are approachable and make you feel comfortable to be around them.
