Moving to a new country is an exciting time, and you will have lots of questions about life at the University of Salford. We will support you from the moment you arrive to help you settle in and give you the best start to your studies.

ANY QUESTIONS - JUST ASKUS

Our specialist support service askUS support students with any aspect of university life. Our askUS advisors can be contacted in person, online and over the phone, and give advice on everything from health, wellbeing to visas, finance to faith, diversity to careers, and more.

If you don’t feel comfortable talking about a problem or worry with friends, family or your tutor, it can be easier to speak to someone outside of the situation. Our wellbeing advisors can offer you a confidential, judgement-free conversation. The type of health and wellbeing services we offer includes: / 24-hour helpline proving emotional support and counselling / Advice with financial issues / Health advice and support accessing healthcare services

SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS WITH CHILDREN

Studying for a degree whilst looking after young children can be challenging, but there is a wealth of services available to you at Salford to allow you to achieve your learning goals. Busy Bees nursery, located on our Frederick Road campus, is open 8.00am – 6.00pm every weekday, offering places for babies and children aged three months to five

years old (the nursery is independent from the University, places must be pre-booked and are subject to availability).

STUDENTS’ UNION

The University of Salford Students’ Union (USSU), which is run independently from the University, is here to help you love your life at Salford. It is made up of student-elected representatives and provides: / Low cost meals in Atmosphere Kitchen and Bar / Two shops on campus, selling low cost supplies and groceries / Over 100 different activity groups and sports teams / Social events such as comedy nights and quizzes / National Union of Students (NUS) discount cards for high street shops and services

Our Students’ Union also provides support services. This includes the Students’ Union Advice Centre which supports students with academic matters by providing independent, professional advice, also the Denizen scheme which supports students who are in on-campus accommodation.

Rafiki is the Students’ Union’s listening service, led by students, for students. If you’re experiencing any problems while you’re at university, you can come in and talk to our volunteers. They are trained students and can listen to you and provide peer support. They can also signpost you to support services on campus or externally which can help. Rafiki, based in University House is a drop-in service, so you don’t need an appointment. We also offer an instant messaging service. Head to www. salfordstudents.com/rafiki to find out more.

Our Faith Centre is located on campus and offers support, friendship, and services for students and staff from all faiths and beliefs. Alongside private prayer and group worship facilities, there are spaces for personal reflection, social activities, pastoral support, and relaxation. Greater Manchester is very diverse, so you can practice your religion freely and find many places of worship.

STUDY SUPPORT

To help you achieve the best results in your studies, you will be assigned a personal tutor from your course to provide you with regular academic advice and guidance. SAFETY AND SECURITY

Our security staff take pride in looking after our community of students and staff. We offer an on-campus security service which provides assistance for students and staff 24-hours a day. From carrying out active foot patrols, to monitoring CCTV and alerts from apps on student phones, our security team have got everything covered.

Manchester is generally a safe place to live. Like any major city it is important to stay alert, but following basic safety advice will allow students to live safely and enjoy all the exciting things the city has to offer. Upon arrival, students will be given a safety briefing to find out about the support and security services that we provide.
