Digital Humanities The ability to use digital technology and to work in online environments is now essential to career success. But it’s not just technical skills that are important: making ethical judgments about technology, communicating effectively in online environments, and understanding how technology affects what it means to be human are crucial skills for succeeding in the workplace and living a meaningful life. Digital Humanities majors are prepared to succeed in a wide variety of fields by developing technical competencies in database management, coding, and web design as well as wide-ranging knowledge in literature, history, the arts and philosophy. ACCREDITATIONS The University of St. Francis is accredited by both the Higher Learning Commission (hlcommission.org) and the Illinois Board of Higher Education (ibhe.org).
Digital Humanities majors take courses in computer science and statistics, preparing them to use digital technology to study questions about the arts, culture, and the nature of human existence. They also take courses in literature, history, philosophy, media, and the digital arts, developing strong skills in critical thinking, design, and communication. The Digital Humanities major prepares students for careers working in museums, libraries, and cultural organizations as well as in the tech industry, where their communication strengths, ethical reasoning, and aesthetic awareness will complement their technical skills. From overseeing digital content for an art museum to shaping the user experience of a website, many different career paths are open for Digital Humanities majors. Like other humanities majors, Digital Humanities also prepares students to succeed in law school and graduate programs in library science, English, history, media studies, communications, and more.
Digital Humanities majors design and complete a capstone project that provides hands-on experience in research, database management, web design, project management, and collaboration. The flexible course sequence allows students to tailor the major to their interests, and the capstone showcases their skills and creative thinking. Students create a professional digital project that develops sophisticated design skills, information literacy, and communication abilities. Digital Humanities majors are on the cutting edge, using technology to advance knowledge about the arts, cultures, and enduring questions of humanity.
