WELCOME FROM PROFESSOR PAUL TOWNSEND

Professor Paul Townsend is Pro-ViceChancellor and Executive Dean for the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey.

He is an internationally renowned scientist in the field of cell stress and survival mechanisms, adjunct professor at A*STAR, Singapore, and Honorary Research Professor at the Universities of Athens and Manchester, and Gustave Roussy hospital in Paris.

In the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, we are constantly striving to provide the best learning experience for our students. This means monitoring global trends and adapting our approach to stay ahead of our competitors, ensuring that we deliver best practice and academic excellence.

Experts in our Faculty are discovering the latest developments in areas such as early prediction of health and disease, using AI and machine learning to advance our understanding of biology; chronobiology and sleep; healthy ageing; nutrition and food security; the links between psychology and social change, communities and relationships; and humanity’s relationship with the environment.

The University of Surrey has credit recognition arrangements with Temasek Polytechnic in Singapore. Eligible diploma graduates may receive credit for previous study and will be able to fast-track completing their bachelors course within the School of Biosciences.

All students must also meet the University of Surrey’s English language requirements. surrey.ac.uk/english-requirements

BSc Food Science and Nutrition

Surrey is ranked 2nd in the UK for food science by The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024

On this course, you will learn about all aspects of food science and nutrition, including the importance of food processing and preservation, food security, and the role of food chemistry in human nutrition.

You will study in our £12.5 million Innovation for Health Learning Laboratory, acquiring practical experience that is essential for a career in food science and nutrition and which is highly valued by employers.

You can also undertake a paid placement with a large employer such as the UK Government, Unilever and Tata Global Beverages or a smaller food and nutrition enterprise. A placement year is a fantastic opportunity to explore a potential career path and expand your skill set. You’ll also gain invaluable work experience which will help you stand out in a competitive job market.

BSc/MSci Biochemistry

Hands-on exploration of the science underpinning life, from a cellular level to whole ecosystems, is central to the design of this course.

Our exceptional facilities and teaching from research-active academics will provide the perfect environment to help you thrive as a scientist.

You can also undertake a placement year at home or abroad, which will broaden your experience and can be arranged with organisations such as hospitals, food suppliers and pharmaceutical companies. A placement year is a fantastic opportunity to explore a potential career path and expand your skill set. You’ll also gain invaluable work experience which will help you stand out in a competitive job market.

If you achieve at least 60 per cent in your first year on our BSc Biochemistry, you could move onto our MSci course, which is an integrated masters. The MSci requires an additional year of study and you will complete a laboratory-based dissertation.

This degree is highly attractive to employers and is ideal if you are aiming for a technical research career in industry or academia.

BSc Biological Sciences

On this course, you’ll study topics that are fundamental to biosciences, as well as having the opportunity to specialise in animal biology and ecology, cellular and molecular sciences, or infection and immunity.

You will learn in state-of-the-art facilities on campus as well as conducting fieldwork both on campus and further afield. Offsite work may include visits to the Cole Museum of Zoology, Surrey Wildlife Trust and Hawk Conservancy Trust.

Many students on this course undertake a placement year to develop their professional skills, in areas such as animal welfare, cancer research, genetics, pharmaceuticals and microbiology. Explore the fascinating world of veterinary biosciences and examine the scientific understanding behind animal and public health. This comprehensive course offers an in-depth exploration of major zoonotic infectious diseases and veterinary immunology and you can tailor your learning experience by selecting modules aligned with your interests.

Humanity’s relationship with the environment is the most important issue of our lifetime, and environmental psychology is at the very heart of this. It’s also relevant now more than ever as countries around the world adapt to climate change.

Singapore’s own Green Plan 2030 aims to ensure that the nation achieves its ambitious targets for sustainable development, including building greener homes and restoring nature in urban areas.

On this course, which is unique due its holistic focus on sustainability, environmental design and wellbeing, you will explore the relationship between people and their physical environment at every scale. This includes personal space in homes and offices, engagement with the natural world and awareness of environmental crises.

You will have access to our state-of-theart psychology facilities, which include a virtual reality suite, and will have the opportunity to join our Environmental Psychology Research Group.

On this MSc, you will study the science of how we think, feel and behave in social contexts. Topics covered in this course include prejudice and discrimination, moral judgement and emotions, and the links between psychology and social change, communities and relationships.

Lectures will involve discussions and activities that will help you understand social issues, including those addressed in the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

You will have access to our range of psychology facilities, including two observation labs, which will allow you to investigate how we think about ourselves and other people, and how we influence and relate to one another.
