The University of Vaasa is a multidisciplinary businessoriented university. Our strategic areas are finance, management, energy and multilingualism. We educate responsible leaders and experts for international assignments. The University has a Graduate School, which organises general and introductory courses for all post-graduates. The Graduate School ensures that all doctoral students have the opportunity to pursue high-quality doctoral studies. The doctoral programmes prepare students for highlevel independent research work. Studies consist of general studies and methods, primary subject studies, optional studies and a doctoral thesis. Students are expected to graduate as doctors in four years.
Each doctoral student belongs to a doctoral programme. The Graduate School has four programmes:

Doctoral Programme in Administrative Sciences The Doctoral Programme in Administrative Sciences is an interdisciplinary programme that educates doctoral-level experts and independent researchers mainly for positions in the public sector, but also for positions in the private sector. The programme utilises the scientific resources of the research fields in the Unit of Administrative Sciences.
The contents of the programme are decided upon by the groups of the programme. The major subjects are: regional studies, public management, public law, and social and health management. Students of the Doctoral Programme in Administrative Sciences complete a Doctor of Administrative Sciences, degree.
Doctoral Programme in Business Studies The Doctoral Programme in Business Studies produces Doctors of Science in Economics and Business Administration, who are well prepared for demanding expert and management roles, as well as for careers in academia. The University of Vaasa is one of the oldest higher education institutions of business studies in Finland and the Faculty of Business Studies has a long tradition of high-quality graduate education, both nationally and internationally.
The programme offers doctoral studies with the following majors: management and organisation, accounting and finance, marketing, business law and economics. The doctoral programme collaborates closely with national graduate schools, which organise national and international events, courses and seminars. There is also an active network of international partners consisting of organisations and universities.

Doctoral Programme in Languages and Communication The Doctoral Programme in Languages and Communication educates competent scientific experts in languages and communication with national and international connections. The programme offers doctoral studies with the following majors: English Studies, Modern Finnish, Applied Linguistics, Scandinavian Languages, Swedish
Language, German Language and Literature and Communication Studies. Students of the Doctoral Programme in Languages and Communication complete a Doctor of Philosophy, degree.
Doctoral Programme in Technical Sciences The Doctoral Programme in Technical Sciences educates high-calibre experts capable of independent research work to serve industries, business, the world of academia and other organisations. The programme is multidisciplinary, covering every part of technology development from new technical innovations and solutions to product development.
Postgraduate degrees can be completed in the following research fields (major subjects): automation technology, energy engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, telecommunication engineering, industrial management, statistics and mathematical sciences. The doctoral programme produces Doctors of Science in Technology, Doctors of Science in Business and Administration and Doctors of Philosophy.

The Graduate School of the University of Vaasa admits only the most motivated, talented, research-oriented students to its doctoral programmes. There are two application periods for doctoral studies at the university annually. The application deadlines are 30 April and 15 November each year.
