This is why we are here.

To gather with others who are dedicated to discovery, creativity, community, and action.

The future demands committed, brave leaders in every sector. Catamounts are biologists and painters, physicians and farmers, CEOs and teachers—people in every field with the courage, vision, global mindset, and ambition to effect lasting change.

For people and planet.
Why UVM, Why Not UVT? It comes from our Latin name: Universitas Viridis Montis, “University of the Green Mountains.”

CHANGE THE WORLD WITH YOUR IDEAS

Mason’s post-college goal? Launch his own clean agritech business. At UVM, he’s gaining real-world experience bringing ideas from the lab bench to the market with the Academic Research Commercialization program (ARC).

When he’s not innovating in and out of the classroom, Mason is a leader for UVM’s pre-orientation wilderness adventure program. He guided eight students through Vermont’s mountain bike trails for five days.

MASON // MAJOR: ENGINEERING (SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION CONCENTRATION)

“I realized UVM embodied who I am and who I hope to become.”

ISABELLE // MAJOR: CHEMISTRY

Isabelle’s first class at UVM was organic chemistry with Professor Matthias Brewer–a pioneer in creating better building blocks for medicine. After that first class, she worked in Professor Brewer’s lab for over two years, including summers, on her way to a research career in the pharmaceutical industry. As the recipient of the Goldwater Scholarship, the U.S. Congress’s most prestigious undergraduate scholarship in the natural sciences, math, and engineering, she’s well on her way.

PERIN // MAJOR: NEUROSCIENCE

UVM’s identity centers help students build an uplifting circle of support. When Perin first immigrated to the U.S. from India, he struggled to make friends. At UVM, Perin found his sense of belonging at the Mosaic Center for Students of Color–helping students of color connect with each other and navigate university life. With this strong support system, Perin found success–going on to pursue his master’s in pharmacology at UVM.

Soham has embraced global citizenship. He traveled from Mumbai to Vermont to attend UVM–and kept traveling the world even after he arrived.

Soham spent two months in Kenya’s Masai Mara as a wildlife monitoring intern, contributing to data collection efforts focused on big cats and herbivore ecology. “Through this internship, I’ve been able to explore my research interests as well as my innate passion for wildlife photography and art for science communication.”

Back home at UVM, Soham leads UVM’s International Student Club, helping to build global community, cultural awareness, and support for his fellow international students.

THE DOCTOR IS IN, AND READY TO TEACH

JULIA // MAJOR: NURSING

After years of dedication to a vision that began in elementary school, Julia’s dream to become a neonatal intensive care (NICU) nurse came true as she began her nursing career at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Julia credits the clinical experiences embedded in the nursing program for their critical role in preparing her for the profession. Working closely with a nurse in the NICU at UVM Medical Center, Julia logged 12hour night shifts to develop essential skills for her career. She also worked summers as a nursing assistant in the Massachusetts General Hospital pediatrics unit to gain hands-on patient care experience.

“I appreciate the opportunity to learn from and grow with my peers, and I’ve made lifelong friends along the way. I also made valuable connections with each of my professors and feel fully supported and cared for by each of them. I’m grateful to be in a program where I’m not only a student in my professors’ classes, but also a human being that matters to them.”

Our state-of-the-art STEM complex houses leading-edge facilities like the FabLab, a rapid-prototyping shop for incubating ideas and engaging imaginations.

WAYNE // MAJOR: ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

Engineering students face the ultimate challenge with the Senior Experience in Engineering Design (SEED) program. Local companies like Ben & Jerry’s and GlobalFoundries pose problems, and teams of students combine their skillsets to come up with real-world solutions.

Wayne, an electrical engineering major, was part of a team that worked with Healthy Design, a company specializing in devices to improve the recovery of ICU patients. He and his team created a functioning prototype of a device that helps injured patients improve the mobility of their arms.

Working directly with the curator and collections managers, Zoe learned to properly document a gallery for deinstallation and selected artifacts to be displayed in a new exhibit.

ZOE // MAJOR: HISTORY

Forestry major Jon jumped boots first into on-the-ground forestry operations with a summer internship in Idaho. His successes in the classroom and in the field added up to a job offer from the U.S. Forest Service before his final semester began. Now he’s returned to Idaho, this time as a public forester in the Payette National Forest, where he will practice silviculture and fire restoration work. Jon considers geospatial technologies to be among the most important skills he’s learned.

“I’ve used it in my courses and my jobs. Most forestry employers look for experience in geographic information systems or GIS.”

“You can’t get that level of experience just from courses. The internship really broadened my forest knowledge. I now have western forestry experience and an eastern forestry education in two majorly different forest types.”
