CHANGE THE WORLD WITH YOUR IDEAS
Mason’s post-college goal? Launch his own clean agritech business. At UVM, he’s gaining real-world experience bringing ideas from the lab bench to the market with the Academic Research Commercialization program (ARC).
When he’s not innovating in and out of the classroom, Mason is a leader for UVM’s pre-orientation wilderness adventure program. He guided eight students through Vermont’s mountain bike trails for five days.
“I realized UVM embodied who I am and who I hope to become.”

Isabelle’s first class at UVM was organic chemistry with Professor Matthias Brewer–a pioneer in creating better building blocks for medicine. After that first class, she worked in Professor Brewer’s lab for over two years, including summers, on her way to a research career in the pharmaceutical industry. As the recipient of the Goldwater Scholarship, the U.S. Congress’s most prestigious undergraduate scholarship in the natural sciences, math, and engineering, she’s well on her way.

Julia credits the clinical experiences embedded in the nursing program for their critical role in preparing her for the profession. Working closely with a nurse in the NICU at UVM Medical Center, Julia logged 12hour night shifts to develop essential skills for her career. She also worked summers as a nursing assistant in the Massachusetts General Hospital pediatrics unit to gain hands-on patient care experience.

Forestry major Jon jumped boots first into on-the-ground forestry operations with a summer internship in Idaho. His successes in the classroom and in the field added up to a job offer from the U.S. Forest Service before his final semester began. Now he’s returned to Idaho, this time as a public forester in the Payette National Forest, where he will practice silviculture and fire restoration work. Jon considers geospatial technologies to be among the most important skills he’s learned.
“I’ve used it in my courses and my jobs. Most forestry employers look for experience in geographic information systems or GIS.”
“You can’t get that level of experience just from courses. The internship really broadened my forest knowledge. I now have western forestry experience and an eastern forestry education in two majorly different forest types.”
