COURSE OUTLINE & LEARNING OBJECTIVES
INTRODUCTION TO SOLIDWORKS AND CAD HISTORY
• Provide an overview of SolidWorks software and its significance in the realm of CAD
• Explore the historical evolution of CAD technology
UNDERSTANDING SOLIDWORKS FEATURES AND USER INTERFACE
• Familiarise participants with the key features of SolidWorks modelling
• Differentiate between sketch and applied features within SolidWorks
• Identify principal components of the SolidWorks user interface
INTRODUCTION TO 3D MODELLING
• Enable participants to create new parts in SolidWorks
• Instruct on inserting sketches and adding geometry within the software
• Establish an understanding of sketch relations and the state of sketches
• Guide participants in extruding sketches into solid 3D models
BASIC PART MODELLING TECHNIQUES

FOUNDRY AWARENESS COURSE
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to provide a basic awareness of the foundry industry to anyone interested in the sector and looking for more information.
COURSE OVERVIEW
The two-hour session begins with a short presentation covering the challenges facing the sector, the several departments found within in a foundry environment, and finishes with a glimpse of the future possibilities achievable.
Participants will have an opportunity to write a CV or update an existing one during the session.
To conclude, participants will have the opportunity to take a tour around a working facility and observe what’s involved in the day to day running of a foundry.

PATTERNMAKING BASIC COURSE
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides an opportunity to gain a basic overview of patternmaking and to achieve insight of practical methods to create a pattern from a drawing.
COURSE OVERVIEW
• Health and safety requirements of all machinery and hand tools employed in the session
• A breakdown of a drawing including draft taper, datums, contraction, centre lines and machining
• Setting out of a pattern including a dimensional check sheet
• Construction of a pattern with supervision, using a bandsaw, sanding disc, bobbin sander and pedestal drill and hand tools
• Finishing with fillets and pattern coat red varnish
• Final dimensional check of the pattern

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will have a basic experience of patternmaking and a good grounding to develop their skills further.

PATTERNMAKING INTERMEDIATE COURSE
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides a comprehensive view of patternmaking including the creation of a pattern of intermediate difficulty, designing a runner system using principles of metal flow and surface areas and mount into a standard compact for use with chemically bonded sand.
COURSE OVERVIEW
• Health and safety requirements of all machinery and hand tools employed in the session
• A breakdown of a drawing including draft taper, datums, centre lines, contraction and machining
• Setting out of a pattern including a dimensional check sheet
• Construction of a pattern with supervision, using a bandsaw, sanding disc, bobbin sander and pedestal drill and hand tools
• Produce a final dimensional report of a pattern
• Conduct a dimensional check of a pattern with metrology equipment provided
• Design and make a simple runner system to fill the mould cavity effectively using a nomogram, including explanation of laminar flow and best practice of runner design
• Construct a compact for use with chemically bonded sand using a plinth and well design and dowelling operations
COURSE BENEFITS
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will have a deeper understanding of patternmaking including other knowledge advantages of runner systems and calculations and the box less moulding process.
