I work very closely with the Sports and Societies Vice President to make sure the student sport experience at Wolverhampton is an enjoyable and positive one.

Becky Millar Becky Millar Student Sports Officer

My name is Eric Potts, and as returning Sports and Societies Vice President, it’s my job to represent the students of the University and be your voice in relation to sport and societies. Last year I worked closely with the Sports Officer, Becky Millar, to give you the best sports experience the Students’ Union could offer. We try to make sports available for anyone who’s interested, from playing competitively to just participating. I truly believe that sport and recreation is a very important part of your university experience. It’s a great way to stay in shape and meet new people. Athletic Union review The Athletic Union runs a range of sports clubs at our Walsall and Wolverhampton campuses which are open to anyone of any ability. If you fancy representing the University in a competitive sport, or trying something new recreationally then come along to the AU or one of the training sessions and speak to the Coach or Instructor, or find out more information on our web pages at www.wolvesunion.org.uk/sports. If you compete in a sport which is not on the website, you may still be able to represent the University in the British University and Colleges (BUCS) National Championships which are held annually. The Athletic Union is responsible for running up to 17 student sports clubs at Walsall and Wolverhampton, providing training facilities, kit, equipment, professional instruction and transport to fixtures, competitions and training events. The dedication of our professional coaches and instructors at the University is second to none, helping you realise your goals. This year, the University’s competitive sports teams have been competing in the BUCS Sports Leagues, National Championships, West Midlands Volleyball League and other open competitions across the region. Providing a wide ranging programme of 50 sports to member institutions all over Great Britain and Northern Ireland, BUCS is the main league in which our teams represent the Athletic Union. The AU also has a number of very successful recreational clubs that continue to thrive year on year. If you have any queries about sport, both recreational and competitive, and how to get involved, please contact the AU and we’ll be happy to point you in the right direction.

Roll of honour Attracting more sports and competitors than ever before, the 2009 BUCS Championships, held in Sheffield, provided us with some real highlights. Track and Field saw our athletes performing magnificently against stiff opposition from Bath, Brunel and Loughborough in disciplines including 60m sprint, 60m hurdles, long jump, shot and 1500m - with a number of athletes qualifying for semi and final places. As a reflection of their success, the Track and Field Club have received kit sponsorship from Enterprise Graduate Recruitment Ltd. Other notable performances include the Women's Basketball team who had a blazing final against St Marys in the BUCS Trophy Final - an amazing game with many close calls which finished Wolverhampton 72 - St Marys 67. In other BUCS Knockout Finals, Wolverhampton, backed by a huge home crowd, lifted the Men's Midlands Conference Cup, beating Coventry University 66-61 on Wednesday 18 March. Our Football 2nds gained promotion to Tier 3, and Men's Badminton were promoted to Tier 2. Not only that, Men’s and Women's Volleyball won Division 1, with the women’s team taking home the WMVA Cup. Jitsu achieved a highly respectable finish at the Atemi Nationals, and Cyclo Cross took first place at BUCS.

Natasha Blunt

The Scholarship Scheme helped me massively to cope under pressure from both university and my sport, enabling me to achieve high grades and compete at international level. I would recommend the Scheme to everyone competing in sport, this programme has allowed me to achieve not only in Muay Thai but within my career and also directly impacting on my grades. Before the programme I was achieving average grades under a lot of pressure, now I’m achieving very high grades and enjoying studying.

The Scholarship Scheme was one of the reasons I went back to University and why I chose this University in particular. It has provided both financial and mentor support and aided me in continuing my sport and competition whilst studying. Without the Scheme I wouldn’t have been able to fund the competition fees and travel expenses to European and World Competitions. If you have a talent, enjoy training and competition and want to combine a degree with your sporting ambitions I would recommend the Sport Scholarship.
