3 what is head start?
What is Head Start? Welcome to the University of Wolverhampton Head Start prospectus. Its purpose is to introduce staff from our pre-entry partners to the range of curriculum-focused activities and programmes offered through Curriculum Innovation and Development (based within the Education Partnerships department). Head Start sessions provide an insight into a range of areas suitable for students in years 5 through to 13 who are exploring subjects and career options, or who wish to develop skills relevant to secondary, further and higher education and employment. Sessions cover a wide range of topics including; careers in various employment sectors; improving academic, employability, personal and study skills; and practical workshops in areas such as art, computing, engineering, languages, media and science. Head Start sessions may provide one or more of the following opportunities for students to: • gain a more detailed insight into a subject area • further develop key learning and employability skills
to further and higher level study; as well as providing information, advice and guidance. Head Start is particularly appropriate for gifted and talented students, by providing greater challenges and opportunities for them to develop potential gifts and talents. Sessions can also act as an introduction and preparation for students wishing to participate in the Higher Education Modules in Schools and Colleges scheme (HEMiS). HEMiS offers students the opportunity to add breadth to and/or stretch their post-16 programme by experiencing study at level 4 (first year of undergraduate study) by enrolling on one of the modules available through the scheme. This scheme was developed because we recognise the challenge students face when moving from learning in the compulsory sectors to learning at university and the value that early involvement with higher education can have as a means of preparing them for life at university. How to use this publication The activities have been initially grouped together under the following topic headings: Modern Foreign Language; Law and Justice; STEM; Creative Arts; Media and Film; Support for the Project/Extended Project; Skills Development (Academic and Study); Skills Development (Employability and Personal) and HE Information and Awareness Raising. Each activity is then presented in the following format.

Pricing The price of each session is banded either A, B or C to reflect the type of activity and corresponding costs associated with delivery. The variation in price is due to the length of the activity, number/type of staff needed to deliver and/or the cost of materials involved. Please note that these prices relate to individual sessions and may not be appropriate when costing a larger programme containing multiple iterations. BAND A - £5 per student BAND B - £7.50 per student BAND C - £10 per student The price does not include refreshments or lunch. World and Sign Languages A series of innovative and creative workshops and master classes which invite learners to explore further a language which they are studying or to engage in a new language. Sessions may also include the study of cultural aspects of other countries

Law and Justice The School of Law, Social Sciences and Communications (LSSC) offers a wide range of activities and taster sessions throughout the year. Taster days are a great opportunity for students to see our dedicated facilities, meet academic staff and students, find out about the courses offered and get an overview of life as a law student. STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) These sessions are designed to support schools and colleges in the delivery of STEM subjects – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Examples include a Maths Workshop which enable students to develop winning mathematical strategies; an Engineering Challenge, in which students design and present an engineering idea to a panel of experts; and Careers in Science, a chance for students to find out more about courses and careers beyond sixth form. Larger programmes may be developed for National Science and Engineering Week.
The aim of these sessions is to provide an opportunity for students to: • develop their skills in and understanding of STEM subjects • use industry-standard facilities in science and engineering • gain a better understanding of careers leading from STEM subjects and appropriate HE routes. Introduction to cardiovascular and respiratory physiology (Level 2)

Activity description This workshop considers the vital roles that the cardiovascular and respiratory systems play in our daily activities. The workshop will commence with looking at the structure of the heart using our life size anatomical model and considering the events involved in each heart beat. Students will have the opportunity to record their own Electrocardiogram (ECG) to view the electrical currents passing across the heart every time it beats. This will develop an appreciation of why the heart continues to beat throughout our lives. Students will also have the opportunity to see how their heart rate responds to increased activity at different exercise intensities which will generate data for analysis back in the classroom. The relationship between the cardiovascular system and the respiratory system will also be considered. The structure of the respiratory system will be outlined and the process by which oxygen passes into the blood stream in order to be transported to the tissues will be explained.

Investigating the cardiovascular system (Level 3)

Activity description This workshop allows students the opportunity to investigate the function of the cardiovascular system in health and disease. Following a review of the structure of the cardiovascular system students will have the opportunity to investigate the response of the heart and circulation to different forms of exercise and see how static and dynamic forms of exercise bring about different demands upon its components. This will generate data which can be later analysed in the classroom. The control of the cardiovascular system will be considered in bringing about these changes. Students will then be introduced to our life-size patient simulator who looks and acts like a real patient! This will be used to introduce students to ways in which the cardiovascular system can be investigated medically and gain an appreciation of how these investigations can be used to diagnose what is wrong with a patient showing signs of common cardiovascular diseases.

Investigating the respiratory system (Level 3)

Activity description This workshop allows the student to consider the role that the respiratory system undertakes in providing oxygen to support the activities of our body. Following a review of the structure of the respiratory system using our life size anatomical model, students will have the opportunity to take measurements from their own respiratory systems. Lung volumes of students will be recorded using the technique of spirometry and a vitalograph will be used to assess the speed at which air is moved out of the lungs. These measurements are typically related to age, sex and height so population data from the class can be analysed back in the classroom to investigate the trends that exist. The way in which oxygen and carbon dioxide is transported in the blood will be considered and an appreciation developed as to how our breathing is regulated to suit the demands upon the body. Common respiratory diseases will be introduced and the ways in which they can be diagnosed highlighted. Activity name HSSTEM05

Activity description Students can measure their heart activity using Electrocardiogram (ECG) and the electrical resistance of their skin using Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) technology. Involves putting ECG stickers on arms / legs for ECG and attaching metal paddle electrodes to two fingers for GSR. Activity description Students will be given a brief presentation about Civil Engineering as a career and HE opportunities available at the University. Students will then be divided into groups for the workshop which will be conducted in a specialist Construction lab. The competition to build a tower from drinking straws will require the tower to be a maximum of 400mm in height and capable of holding 150ml of water. The tower which can hold the maximum volume will win depending upon the weight of the tower.

Activity description This session looks at why television viewers of all ages spend many hours following their favourite soap operas. It is the most popular type of programme on television, and the session looks at both how and why. By focusing upon clips from a number of popular soap operas (including Hollyoaks, EastEnders and Coronation Street) students will be asked to identify the various characteristics that separate such series from other television forms. In small groups, students will then work together to come up with an idea for their very own soap opera, complete with characters and introductory storylines.

Activity description This session looks at the phenomenon that is known as ‘Reality TV’ and explores its development and the various forms it can take. By examining series such as X Factor, Big Brother and The Apprentice, the session explores the characteristics of the genre, including the construction of narratives. To what extent are the programmes we are watching anything close to ‘reality’? The students are asked to adopt a critical approach to the genre in considering why Reality TV is so popular with television producers, the people who apply to participate in them, the wider media and, not least, the audience at home. Activity description The media surround us: on television, radio, in print and online. We are bombarded with stories and images on a daily basis, yet how much of what we see, read or hear actually tells us the whole story? What can – and should - we actually believe? This session looks at a range of stories that have been reported as ‘news’ across the media and students are asked to spot the discrepancies between various accounts. Issues of semiotics/language and representation will be explored, together with how an assumed audience for a publication, programme or website can significantly affect the way a story is communicated.

Activity description In this engaging practical workshop students will get the chance to work with current University of Wolverhampton staff and undergraduate students to create an Academy News Programme using the specialist video and filming equipment available in the School of Art and Design. In pairs, the students will first develop an idea and write a script. Set against a green/blue screen the students will then get to experience what it’s like to present a television programme. They will also get to see ‘behind the scenes’ at the control desk. In addition the students will use flip cameras to create short interview clips of each other. Appendix 1 National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level descriptors
The National Qualifications Framework (NQF) sets out the levels against which a qualification can be recognised in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. All qualifications are awarded an NQF level. If qualifications share the same level as another qualification, they are broadly similar in terms of the demand they place on the learner.
