2016 CHAMPIONS OF STUDENT SUCCESS Mary Frost Ashley Charitable Trust Following the death of Mary Frost Ashley in 2006, members of her family established the Mary Frost Ashley Charitable Trust to continue her charitable work in the community. Today, the Mary Frost Ashley Charitable Trust has made a name for itself beyond its namesake, and is known throughout southeastern Wisconsin for its support of community needs such as health, human services, and most prominently, education. Nowhere is this truer than at UW-Parkside. Through the leadership of Patsy, Andy, and Crystal Callahan, the Mary Frost Ashley Charitable Trust is a champion of university initiatives that have a direct impact on students’ academic growth and preparation for careers. Their support of paid internship opportunities through the Ranger Link program, and study abroad scholarships through the Global Scholars program, reduces the financial barriers that can prevent UW-Parkside students from experiencing these high impact learning opportunities. As a leading supporter of UW-Parkside’s internship and study abroad efforts, the Mary Frost Ashley Charitable Trust has made it possible for more than 100 students (and counting) to learn and grow on campus, in the community, and around the world.

Scott and Alice Thomson Melvin Scott Thomson (Scott) left many marks on UW-Parkside. As a professor in the Biological Sciences faculty at UW-Parkside for 22 years, he taught and conducted research with countless students. Scott also served as the chair of the Biological Sciences department from 2003 to 2007. Following his retirement in 2014, Scott and his wife, Alice, established the Thomson Research Fellows Fund to continue his legacy of teaching, research, and service. The Thomson Research Fellows Fund provides funding for UW-Parkside undergraduates to conduct field-based or laboratory research in the biological sciences in collaboration with dedicated faculty members. The faculty mentorship and hands-on research experience gives students outstanding preparation for graduate school, professional research, and careers in the sciences. Although Scott passed away in March 2016 after a courageous battle against cancer, his passion for scientific discovery and his commitment to student success live on. Scott and Alice’s support of the Thomson Research Fellows Fund will make a difference for UW-Parkside students for years to come.

Mary Lou & Arthur F. Mahone Fund The Mary Lou and Arthur F. Mahone Fund was created in 1999 to perpetuate the legacy of two dynamic change agents. While possessing different leadership styles, both Mary Lou and Arthur were the most influential couple advocating for social justice in Kenosha. They were married 51 years and raised nine children. Their mission works to provide educational opportunities for economically and academically deserving youth and supports healthy lifestyle initiatives in communities of color. The Fund offers the Career Exploration Organization (CEO) initiative which is designed to match low- to moderate-income youth with a business mentor in order to create a pathway for academic and career success. To date, the Fund has awarded nearly 200 scholarships to Kenosha youth over the past 15 years. Guided by the Mahone family and a dedicated board of directors and volunteers, the Mahone Fund honors local humanitarians with the Living Legend and Signature awards for their transformational and sustainable support to the overall mission and success of the Mahone Fund. The annual Reaching for Rainbows “Pursuit of Excellence” gala , the HarborPark Jazz, Rhythm and Blues festival, the Lincoln Park Live music series, and the POWER UP – Plug into Your Future College Scholarship & Resource Fair are the primary educational and cultural community outreach activities. UW-Parkside students have benefitted greatly from the Mahone Fund’s work across the community. Many Mahone Fund college fair attendees, program participants, and scholarship recipients find success at UW-Parkside, including more than 20 UW-Parkside students who have received the CEO Scholarship. The Mahone Fund’s commitment to students at UWParkside is deepened through their creation of the Forward Together Scholarship for students transferring to UW-Parkside from Gateway Technical College. Through their partnership in achieving shared educational goals and their direct support of UW-Parkside students, the Mary Lou & Arthur F. Mahone Fund leads the way for student success in southeastern Wisconsin.

CHAMPIONS OF STUDENT SUCCESS The UW-Parkside Foundation and UW-Parkside present the Champions of Student Success Awards to recognize and honor individuals and organizations that provide exceptional support to the university and its students through scholarships and other opportunities that directly impact student success.
