Welcome classmates and Fellow alum! It is with great pleasure that the advisory board for your College of Natural and Health Sciences(CNHS) welcomes you to our first Annual event-”Get Back.” Years ago many of us may have gone to the year “End” party after spring finals and then drifted away for the summer or even longer. Let’s put an end to that by prioritizing the “Get Back” event going forward. Our CNHS continues to have a tremendous tradition, especially in the health care field. It is with honor and gratitude that we remember Dr. Anna Marie Williams but also enthusiastically encourage the current leaders that have carried on the remarkable tradition that was begun over 40 years ago. The initial alumni board has had educational programs planned to be introduced in the Kenosha County School system, it has been involved in the recent budget process and recently has had to say good-bye to our energetic mentor of many years. On behalf of my fellow Board members and Dean Otu, I would like to encourage you to become active in our university. There are always opportunities to contribute Time, Talent and Treasure. Welcome Back! Dr. Thomas Wood CNHS Advisory Board President

Message from the Dean: Greetings! July 1, 2015 marked the third year of existence of College of Natural and Health Sciences (CNHS) and I am twenty nine days into my fourth year as founding dean of the college. My CNHS faculty and staff colleagues have these anniversaries as well as many other reasons to celebrate. CNHS faculty continue to engage our students in disciplinary inquiry, providing the scientific education that is critical to produce the science literate citizen as well as producing individuals who have deeper knowledge of the field to inform the big decisions in science and health. Welcome to this inaugural CNHS Alumni Summer Celebration! We hope it will be an opportunity for you to exchange stories with classmates whom you have lost touch with since graduation. CNHS Advisory Board members and I are delighted that you came and that we can also engage in conversations with you about your experiences while attending Parkside and where your education has led you. We would like to share your experiences with our current and future students. We know the possibilities are endless. We imagine “young students being inspired by your stories, which could push them through the metaphorical finish line. These conversations are a great reason to celebrate. We are very proud of the accomplishments and contributions that our former students, you, add to our campus and in our communities. More than 60% of Parkside’s alumni reside in the region, so you may not even realize how many fellow alumni are also your colleagues and neighbors. That is another reason to celebrate! Our students continue to attain unparalleled success. Students interested in health professions continue to attain acceptance rates to medical school twice the national average. Equally, our students place very well into graduate schools, or jobs within their field. In the program you will find our vision and mission statements. We developed strategies and initiatives to achieve and live those ideals. In other words, we have a strategic plan, which involved many people in this room and beyond. To all the alumni, I hope this event will be the first of many return visits to our college in the weeks, months and years to come. I am personally grateful to the CNHS Advisory Board, hosting this event, for their guidance and support of the college in the past two years. Thank you for joining us to share memories from forty-five years ago or just last year. All of them are priceless to the College of Natural and Health Sciences students, staff, faculty, Advisory Board and UW-Parkside.

Dr. Douglas Devan Dr. Douglas Devan was the first University of Wisconsin-Parkside graduate to complete medical school. Dr. Devan was a charter member of UW-Parkside’s pre-med club founded by Dr. Anna Maria Williams and a graduate of the historic class of 1970, UW-Parkside’s first graduating class. He attended medical school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Medical School and graduated in 1974. His general surgery residency was followed by a year of plastic surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin in the application of free tissue flaps and rotational flap transfers for complex wound repair problems. In June, 1979 he returned to his hometown of Kenosha and began his general surgery practice. He became a member of the Fellow American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.), and was Board certified in General Surgery in 1982. He served as an Associate Clinical Professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He was also appointed by Governor Earl to serve on the State of Wisconsin Medical Examining Board. He served his community professionally as well as politically when he was elected as Alderman to the City of Kenosha to represent District 15. In 1992, Dr. Devan moved to the Twin Cities where he held general surgery staff privileges at United Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital and the Children’s Hospital in St. Paul, MN. He retired from active medical practice in 2010 and is a part-time consultant for surgical guideline creations at Health Risk Management and United Health Care.

Dr. William Jeranek Dr. William “Bill” Jeranek was the second University of WisconsinParkside graduate to complete medical school. It was at Parkside where Dr. Jeranek met his mentor, Dr. Anna Maria Williams. She told him her exams were easy. All he had to do is “know everything”. Dr. Williams was the taskmaster who inspired him to start the UWP Pre-Med Club where he became the club’s first president. William recalls that one Easter Sunday, she called him at home and told him to go the lab and finish an experiment. Bill reminded her it was Easter Sunday and she replied, “The bugs don’t know that.” Dr. Jeranek graduated from UW-Parkside in 1971 with a B.S. in Biochemistry. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison Medical School, which he stated, “… was easy compared to Dr. William’s class.” He also received advanced medical training at Texas Tech University and did his residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin. In 1979, Bill came back to Kenosha and began his family practice. He said, “It has been a rewarding career. Medicine is constantly changing –CT scans, MRIs, laparoscopic surgery. To go into medicine one has to keep abreast of change and do your best to ‘know everything’”. His family practice is located in St. Catherine’s Medical Center Clinic where he has been practicing for over 35 years.

Herpien meaning “To Creep” Herpetologist and UWP Associate Professor, Dr. Greg Mayer, will introduce guests to what some consider his “creepy” collection of reptiles and amphibians. Dr. Mayer teaches one of the most popular general education courses at UWP, “Science and Pseudoscience” as well as courses in ecology, evolution, zoology, statistics, and history of science. His research interests are in the ecology, evolution, and biogeography of vertebrates in amphibians and reptiles of the West Indies. He received a B.S. at State University of New York at Stony Brook and his A.M. and Ph.D. at Harvard University. He served for nine years on the Board of Directors of the Racine Zoological Society, including two years as Chair. He frequently presents on zoological and environmental subjects to schools and community groups in Racine and Kenosha.

Commemorative Prints The College of Natural and Health Sciences (CNHS) in partnership with the Advising and Career Center created an internship to highlight our amazing UWP students. Art major, Sabrina Miner, crafted a limited edition set of prints, in recognition of the first CNHS Alumni Summer Celebration. After graduation in December, Sabrina will continue to focus on her studio art, while seeking full time employment as a museum curator or a related field.

Artist Statement: This image was carved out of a 9”x6” mounted linoleum block and printed on a heavy weight, white, 9”x12” paper. Each of the colors seen were printed separately, layering over the previous color. After a color was printed, more of the linoleum block’s surface was carved away. Together the three designs created a triptych, a three paneled composition which creates a larger image when seen as a whole. This design was produced to represent the University of Wisconsin Parkside’s College of Natural and Health Sciences Alumni Event. I wanted to present you with a visual depiction of what this college looks like when different areas of study are brought together. I hope you enjoy this beautiful imagery as much as I enjoyed creating it. -Sabrina Miner

Special thanks: Dr. Bryan Lewis for the biology lab tour, Artworks for use of the printing press, and Modern Apothecary for displaying and selling the prints.

All Proceeds from the sale of this limited edition print go to support the College of Natural and Health Sciences.

Anna Maria Williams Dr. Anna Maria Williams had many passions which all seemed centered around the University of Wisconsin-Parkside students, faculty and community. She was born in Tampa, Florida and spent her childhood playing the piano and composing music. Anna Maria eventually moved to Wisconsin, where she earned her master’s and doctorate degrees in bacteriology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Williams came to UW-Parkside in 1968 where she helped to establish the life science discipline which eventually became the Biological Sciences Department.

The “Little Dynamo” with twinkling eyes, who sometimes slept in her lab, is someone who has changed more lives than we could ever fully know. Carol Lee Saffioti-Hughes Associate Professor Emerita

There are many stories referencing her high standards and expectations from her students as well as her faculty team. She motivated those around her as much as she pushed herself. Her affection and drive played a major role in the high quality of our current programs. The legacy of Anna Maria Williams lives on; over 90% of our pre-med students are accepted into medical school, which is over twice the national average. Anna Maria Williams retired in 1990 and continued to feed her passions through the development of the Doctors of Color (DOC) program, and the establishment of the Anna Maria Williams Nature Trial. She would regularly attend the Parkside graduation ceremonies as well as the Scholar and Donor Recognition events, where she would relish in the opportunity to meet her scholarship recipients. The College of Natural and Health Sciences Advisory Board encourages us to carry on the legacy of Anna Maria Williams through support of the Anna Maria Williams Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship provides support to outstanding students in the UW-Parkside pre-health program. To give to the next generation of scholars and support her legacy please visit: https://donate.uwp.edu/williams

When you come back to the university after 37 years, what you wonder is … what happens when you walk in. I was met by Dr. Williams when I walked in last night and the first thought through my mind was “My god, I’m in trouble, I didn’t finish something.” Lt. Gen. Charles B. Green, U.S. Air Force

Dr. Williams was more than a professor, more than a program director and more than an advisor. She was truly a mentor. I will always remember her unbridled enthusiasm. She expected so much from us and found a way to coax the very best from us. I will miss her.

Earlier than many, she recognized the need and importance of helping minority secondary school students understand the possibility, build the ambition, and undertake the pre-college preparation needed for success in medical professions; and the longrunning DOC program was the result. Ben Greenebaum, Professor Emeritus

Michael Mullane, MD Aurora Cancer Care Racine

I can remember evenings when I was on campus teaching a night class seeing Anna Maria making the rounds in the library checking to see that the students in the pre-med program were there studying. She was one of a kind in her dedication to her students, her profession, and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Laura Gellott, Professor Emerita

Now, it is time for us to plant and name a tree in honor of Anna Maria. Anna Maria Williams will be greatly missed by so many and her inspiration and legacy will live on. Thank you Dr. Williams and rest in peace. Deborah L. Ford, Chancellor
