Welcome classmates and Fellow alum! Welcome to OUR 2017 CNHS Community Event! Let’s start with the word “OUR” in my welcome – this is OUR event – because YOU are a part of the College of Natural and Health Sciences (CNHS) family – either as an alumnus – or as a current student – or as an individual who cares deeply about UW-Parkside and our college! This event is part of an ongoing effort by YOUR CNHS Advisory Board to bring US together – to network – to share experiences past and present – and to present scholarships (sponsored by the CNHS Advisory Board) to deserving students in OUR college. The CNHS Advisory Board has been active this year. We meet about 4 times each year where students and faculty present examples of their areas of study. This year we had some wonderful presentations on Superconductor Electronics and High Field Magnet Technology, a fossil dig Arlington, TX, and glaciated settings in Alaska. I am continually amazed at the quality and impact UW-P students and faculty are having on our country and the world. The UW-P President and Provost have also been part of our meetings – helping us understand the current state of UW-P and how we can help our university continue to succeed. We also decided to endow a $50,000 CHNS Advisory Board Scholarship - not a small effort – and we need your help in accomplishing this goal. But it was not all work – we had some fun also – with a gathering at a UW-P basketball game (Go Rangers!). All in all – a productive year for YOUR CNHS Advisory Board. I ask you to reflect on your collegiate days – how you grew as an individual – how you were fortunate to have faculty and fellow students that fostered your learning experience. Each of us received some wonderful benefits during our college days – and now is the time for us to pay that back – to help others – just as we were helped. Given this premise, I would like to extend to you the opportunity to become more active in OUR CNHS community – either by a donation to the CNHS scholarship fund – or by becoming involved in our CNHS Advisory Board. For the 2017 CNHS Community Event please consider donating towards the scholarship fund (there are envelopes on each table for this purpose) and bidding on the silent auction items. Well – let’s get ready to have some fun – network – introduce yourselves to others – be proud of OUR scholarship recipients, be proud of OUR college – and become involved in the YOUR College of Natural and Health Sciences. Message from the Dean: On August 1, 2017 I began my sixth year as founding dean of the College of Natural and Health Sciences (CNHS). I continue to work with brilliant faculty and staff who are very dedicated to student’s success. CNHS faculty continue to engage our students in inquiry, providing the scientific education that is critical to produce scienceliterate citizens, as well as producing individuals who have deeper knowledge to make the big decisions in science and health. Welcome to this third annual College of Natural and Health Sciences (CNHS) Community Celebration. CNHS Advisory Board members are delighted that you came and that we can also engage in conversations with you about your experiences while attending Parkside and where your education has led you. We would like to share your experiences with our current and future students. We know the possibilities are endless. We imagine “young” students being inspired by your story, which could push them through the metaphorical finish line. These conversations are a great reason to celebrate you. We are very proud of the accomplishments and contributions that our former students, you, add to our campus and in our communities. Nearly 70% of Parkside’s alumni reside in the region, so you may not even realize how many fellow alumni are also your colleagues and neighbors. That is another reason to celebrate! We continue to develop new programs that will serve the region. This fall semester, we started a new master’s degree in Sport Management. Through a highly competitive grant process, the UW System and State of Wisconsin awarded a $1.3 million dollar grant to fund the renovation of existing space for the sciences at UW-Parkside. On August 31, 2017, we opened the SC Johnson Integrated Science Laboratory. This lab represents a breakthrough opportunity for students, faculty, businesses and organizations in the region to solve problems. This lab boast an array of high-quality equipment acquired through partnership with Shimadzu Scientific instruments. Private and foundation contributions to equip this lab include, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation Enroth family Fund, the John J. and Ruth F. Kloss Charitable Trust, and the Palmer Foundation. The UW Board of Regents has approved our intent to implement a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling – we have a start date of fall 2018 in mind! Our students continue to attain great success. Students interested in health professions continue to attain acceptance rates to medical school twice the national average. Equally, our students place very well into graduate schools, or employment within their fields. To all alumni, I hope this event will continue to be one of many return visits to campus. I am personally grateful to the CNHS Advisory Board, hosting this event, for their vision to gather the community to celebrate the many accomplishments in the college. I am equally grateful for the Advisory Board guidance and support of the college for the past three years. Thank you for joining us to share memories from forty-nine years ago or just last year. All of them are priceless to the College of Natural and Health Sciences students, faculty, staff, Advisory Board and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
AWARD PRESENTATION Dr. Brian Washburn Dr. Washburn earned his Bachelor of Science degree in physics, summa cum laude, from UW-Parkside in 1994. After leaving UW-Parkside, Brian performed research at Argonne National Laboratory. Argonne National Laboratory is a science and engineering research national laboratory serving the United States Department of Energy and is located near Lemont, Illinois. In 1994 he moved to Georgia Tech University where he earned a Ph.D in physics in 2002. For the next three years Brian performed research at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, Colorado. The National Institute of Standards and Technology is a measurement standards laboratory, and a non-regulatory agency of the United States Department of Commerce with its mission is to promote innovation and industrial competitiveness. In his work with NIST, Brian brought a mode-locked fiber laser under careful control as an “optical frequency comb for the first time. Since 2005, Brian has served as a faculty member in the Physics Department at Kansas State University, where he has trained several doctorate and several Master of Science students in experimental physics research. His current research falls within the intersection of nonlinear fiber optics, laser physics, and photonic crystal technology. In 2015, Brian spent a sabbatical leave at NIST in Boulder, Colo. He developed a novel class of lasers based on gas-filled hollow optical fiber and was awarded a patent on this project. Since the beginning of his career, he has co-authored more than 70 scholarly publications in research journals and conference proceedings.

FALL 2017 CNHS SCHOLARSHIP HONOREES Joshua D Carlson “I’ve always had a fascination with the natural sciences, but never really got around to pursuing it beyond a hobby. In 2015, I felt I needed to change careers and wanted to complete my Bachelor’s Degree. I decided to come to Parkside, and enrolled in the Environmental Studies program. Whatever expectations I had at the time have been profoundly exceeded in the semesters since. My instructors have all been willing to engage, encourage, and challenge me, and many have given me opportunities beyond the classroom. My passion for science and learning has grown, and what’s more, I actually feel equipped to pursue the kinds of jobs I care about.”
Bridget Jost My name is Bridget Jost and I am currently a senior at UW-Parkside. I plan to graduate this May with a Bachelor of Science degree. My major is exercise science with a minor is psychology. I am currently playing my third year with the UW-Parkside softball team. This is my second year as a campus ambassador with the Admissions office. I also have been involved with an organization on campus called RSAAC (Ranger Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) for the last two years. After I graduate, I plan to attend graduate school, to receive my masters in Occupational Therapy. Transferring to UW-Parkside from Madison College was a big step for me. This would be my first time living away from home. When I first arrived, I had no idea all the great experiences I would have or how many doors would open for me in the next three years. I am not the same person I was when I first came here. The journey I have been on has given me opportunities I never could have imagined. I have had the good fortune to make lifelong friends with students, teammates, coworkers, teachers and faculty. I have had the opportunity to work with and for many great people. The connections I have made at Parkside are already helping benefit my future. I am so thankful for all the wonderful opportunities I have been given at Parkside. I have benefited from great internship opportunities, including an internship in the Sports Medicine Department at UW Hospital and Clinics (a nationally recognized hospital in the nation), as well as working in an OT outpatient pediatric clinic. The education I received at this university, the professors I have had, prepared me for being successful in the classroom, in my internships and in my future career path. I will say without a doubt that this University has prepared me and given me the resources, and connections, and desire to be successful. I have truly had a wonderful experience as a student at UWP!
Kelsey Robers My name is Kelsey Robers and I am a senior at Parkside. I will be graduating in December with a major in Applied Health Sciences: Pre-Physical Therapy and a minor in Psychology. I have lived in Burlington, WI my entire life with my parents, Tom and Carol, and siblings, Ben and Abbey. After graduation, I am hoping to continue my education in a Doctor of Physical Therapy program in the Midwest. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, reading, running and training, and coaching my 6th grade girls’ basketball team. I recently completed my first half marathon and triathlon and am looking to compete in more events soon. After graduation, I know I will have the tools to succeed because of what I have learned and experienced here at Parkside. My professors and advisors have instilled confidence in me to be the best and have taught me to go above and beyond what is expected. From my time here, I have created lifelong professional and personal relationships that will carry over into my future academic and life endeavors.
Brett Scoles I am from the small town of Kewaskum, WI, and the oldest six children. I have pursued a double major in Applied Health Science and Psychology with a concentration of Physical therapy. I will be attending Physical Therapy school next year. Parkside has given me the opportunity to continue to pursue this career that I am so passionate about. I have learned to manage and excel in all aspects of my life by balancing my academics with my athletics as a member of the wrestling team. I feel that my time at Parkside has adequately prepared me to take the next step in my life towards contributing to healthcare and being an instrumental member of a community.

Commemorative Prints The College of Natural and Health Sciences (CNHS) in partnership with the Advising and Career Center created an internship to highlight our amazing UWP students. Art major Sabrina Miner crafted a limited edition set of prints, in recognition of the first CNHS Alumni Summer Celebration. Sabrina will continue to focus on her studio art, while seeking full time employment as a museum curator or a related field.
Artist Statement: This image was carved out of a 9”x6” mounted linoleum block and printed on a heavy weight, white, 9”x12” paper. Each of the colors seen were printed separately, layering over the previous color. After a color was printed, more of the linoleum block’s surface was carved away. Together the three designs created a triptych, a three paneled composition which creates a larger image when seen as a whole. This design was produced to represent the University of Wisconsin Parkside’s College of Natural and Health Sciences Alumni Event. I wanted to present you with a visual depiction of what this college looks like when different areas of study are brought together. I hope you enjoy this beautiful imagery as much as I enjoyed creating it. -Sabrina Miner
