SZTE International Freshmen Orientation Days 2022

31.08-02.09

Dear “Stork”, we are very happy to have you here. We hope that you will learn and have as much fun in Szeged as much we were waiting for you!

The International Orientation Days are all about you. We try to provide you with all kinds of useful and practical information and advice. For more information and the detailed program please visit https://u-szeged.hu/orientation But being smart is not everything, and university is not just about that. That is why we would like to offer you social programmes as well during these Days. Register for as many as you can to make your experience complete! Also, please contact the information desk for the story why we are calling you a “stork”.*

Albert Szent-Györgyi Exhibition

Albert Szent-Györgyi found and isolated an organic reducing agent, which he called hexuronic acid (now known as ascorbic acid), from plant juices and adrenal gland extracts.

Four years later, as a professor at the University of Szeged, he helped prove that the acid is identical to the antiscurvy vitamin C, which had been discovered in 1907. His discoveries concerning the roles played by certain organic compounds, especially vitamin C, in the oxidation of nutrients by the cell brought him the 1937 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.

If you want to know more about the life and work of Albert SzentGyörgyi then join the guided tour which starts every hour!

If you are interested, please register at the registration desk during the morning of the first day of the Orientation!

28

Treasure Hunt

Wondering about the hidden gems of your new town? Wondering about study places and communities? Wondering where is the best to party? Wondering where to find running buddies? Wondering where the best coffee is made? Wondering about the most convenient mean of transport in Szeged? If you answered yes to at least one of the above questions, then join the treasure hunt team! Contact the information or the registration desk for more information.

Csillagösvény [Star Path]

Located in Ópusztaszer, right next to the National Historical Memorial Park, the mazes welcome families, young couples, groups of friends and all our young at heart guests aged between 2 and 99. The 3.5 km long hedge wall maze is the third largest in the world and its design is visible even from satellites: it is modelled on the legendary Mythical Stag. Try the biggest maze, based on a unique stitch in Hungary and even in Europe! Make the right decision in the 13 forks and choose the right direction to get out of the maze! If you are interested, please

register at the registration desk during the first day of the Orientation!

Freshmen’s Oath

First year students formally join the University community by taking an oath at the beginning of their studies. Among international students of the University of Szeged, this traditionally takes place at the end of the Orientation Days. We dress up in nice clothes and “solemnly swear that we are up to no good”. The formal ceremony will be followed by a community-building Kahoot quiz and a party-marty in the heart of Szeged.

BOTANICAL GARDEN

The Botanical Garden of SZTE, apart from maintaining the already present plant collections and establishing new ones, contributes to the preservation of the genome of protected plant species and, being part of the university, it is serving education and research as well. Furthermore, the Botanical Garden considers it important to take part in forming an environment-conscious approach, in dissemination and public education by organising science classes, extra-curricular activities, weekend family programmes, and exhibitions.
