WELCOME TO THE SAFEST LARGE CAMPUS IN TENNESSEE. CAMPUS SAFETY WITH OVER 20,000 STUDENTS IN A METRO AREA OF 1.13 MILLION, YOU’D EXPECT A CAMPUS THAT’S ANYTHING BUT TRANQUIL. IN FACT, FIRST-TIME VISITORS ARE OFTEN AMAZED AT THE PEACEFUL AND RELAXED VIBE. 10

Bordered on three sides by nonthru streets, car and foot traffic is almost entirely school-related. That’s just one of the reasons UofM boasts by far the lowest campus incident rate in Tennessee—almost 40% lower than any of the state’s ten largest schools, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. And with campus-wide initiatives, ongoing enhancements in technology and regular performance reviews, we’re committed to an environment where your comfort, confidence and safety are paramount. • UofM police officers on duty 24/7, patrolling by car, bike and foot • 600 campus security cameras • Strategically-placed outdoor emergency telephones • Tiger Escort program to accompany students, faculty, staff and visitors around campus after dark • Mass emails, text messages and an outdoor loudspeaker system during severe weather or other emergencies

FIND YOUR PL HERE. THEN MAKE IT HOM RESIDENCE LIFE You’re about to embark on one of the best times of your life. College is all about meeting new people and trying new things—and living on campus is the best way to do these things. Here’s why: You’ll do better in school. Statistics show that you’ll probably have a higher GPA. You’re more likely to graduate on time. More likely to attend class. More likely to take advantage of faculty office hours, tutors, libraries, study groups and advisor support. Everything you need is right here. Great food, free WiFi, laundry service, cultural events and student activities. No worries about the hassles of traffic or parking. Our free Blue Line shuttle gets you around campus quickly. And 24/7 police presence keeps everyone safe. Life is so much easier. Making friends is easier. Getting involved is less intimidating. You’re right in the middle of it all—people, events, classes, 24-hour labs, libraries and more. You can wake up 20 minutes before class starts and still be on time.

HOUSING You’ve got plenty of different floor plans and locations to choose from: Apartments | Townhouses | Traditional Rooms & Suites | Family Housing And we haven’t forgotten about cost—you deserve affordable living. Luckily, living on campus actually saves you more. All your payments are consolidated into one single bill. You’re only responsible for your portion of your living situation (no chasing down roommates for rent). No hidden fees, no hassles. Check out memphis.edu/reslife to look at all your housing options.

MORE THAN

MUSIC AND BBQ. (But okay, the music and BBQ are cool.) MEMPHIS CULTURE Memphis’ character is steeped in a rich history of diversity, creativity and commerce. From food to music to business, few cities can match Memphis’ influence on modern culture. And fewer still can match our work ethic. Maybe it’s that desire to innovate that has led to a recent renaissance of sorts. A rapidly growing tech-startup scene, an explosion of local food options, breweries, indie arts and film, and a wave of urban revitalization have swept up Memphians young and old, creating a can-do, will-do spirit where you genuinely feel like anything’s possible.

It’s always been a great city. But now more than ever, Memphis is a city on the verge of greatness.

14

SPORTS

GREENSPACE

Memphians live and breathe Tigers and NBA Grizzlies hoops, but Tigers football and baseball, along with AAA Redbirds baseball (Cardinals), round out a full year’s worth of sports.

Bike, run or walk miles of greenlines, trails, parks and urban bike lanes in one of the nation’s greenest cities.

MUSEUMS

MUSIC

The National Civil Rights Museum (history), Stax and Sun Studio (music), The Brooks (fine art) and The Pink Palace (eclectic weirdness) are just a few local faves.

FOOD FESTIVALS

Find live music seven nights a week, including free Levitt Shell concerts and shows at Hi-Tone Cafe, Minglewood Hall and dozens of venues small and large.

NIGHTLIFE Hit up weekend hotspots on the Highland Strip, as well as in CooperYoung, Overton Square, Downtown, Broad Avenue & South Main Arts Districts and more.

The World BBQ Championship is only the start. Local food fests celebrate everything from wings to crawfish to burgers and more.

FESTIVALS Local staples include Indie Memphis (film), Gonerfest (music), Cooper-Young Fest (everything), Memphis in May/Beale Street Music Festival and numerous local arts, music and cultural events.

TOURISTY (BUT FUN) Tour your new hometown, starting with Beale Street, Graceland, Memphis Rock ’n’ Soul Museum and the world’s only Bass Pro Shops store in a pyramid. 15
