Get to Know the University of Memphis Founded in 1912, the UofM is a public research university located in Memphis, Tennessee. The University has more than 17,000 undergraduate students and more than 4,200 graduate students. There are 930 full-time faculty members on campus and additional visiting and adjunct professors. At the crossroads of major international commerce, Memphis provides opportunities for students to gain hands on experiences through internships with local companies. Each year 5,000 students participate in internships across the city. U.S. News & World Report ranks the University of Memphis Academic Internship Program in the top ten nationally. Many of the companies that partner with the UofM for internships such as FedEx, Autozone and International Paper are actually headquartered in Memphis. Internships are valuable to students for important work experience. Students can receive academic credit while working on paid or unpaid internships. CIES works closely with international students interested in these opportunities to ensure that the student remains in good status while pursuing these career advancing internships.

The International Student Services division of the Center for International Education Services is the department home for all international students studying at the University of Memphis. The ISS office provides a range of assistance to students and their dependents from the moment they are admitted to the UofM to their graduation.

The ISS office also assists international student groups with a variety of cultural and social functions.
New Student Orientation Each semester, the International Student Services office hosts a new student orientation. The International Student Orientation is mandatory for all new and transfer F-1 international students. Students must bring their passport, visa and signed I-20. This orientation is meant to answer any questions that students starting at a new school might have. There is a lot of important information provided during this day, so please be sure to attend this event. It is also a great way to meet your fellow incoming international students.
International Student Association (ISA) ISA is a registered student organization that welcomes all international students and those who are interested in learning more about international culture. The group is a great starting point for international students who are new to campus and Memphis. ISA hosts events throughout each semester which are a great way to get to know international and local students alike. The largest event each year is the ISA International Night during which students are given a platform to showcase their international culture and cuisine.
UofM is home to 5 Centers of Excellence. All professors at those centers have the highest degree possible in their discipline.

International Student Funding International students at the University of Memphis have several options for funding their education. MERIT-BASED INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP The University of Memphis is proud to offer merit-based scholarships for high-achieving international undergraduate students whose program expenses are not supported by governments, organizations or corporations. Criteria for the scholarship include: a high school GPA of 3.0 or above for first-time freshmen or a 3.0 cumulative GPA plus 12 transferable credits for transfer students. Students are only eligible for this scholarship if they are a degree-seeking international undergraduate on a student visa. Dual citizens and/or permanent residents are not eligible. This scholarship cannot be combined with other UofM institutional scholarships and is limited to eight semesters for freshmen and up to seven semesters for transfer students. All eligible applicants will automatically be considered for this award. No separate scholarship application is needed. Award amounts vary annually and range from $6,000 to $8,500. GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS Graduate assistantships are awarded through each individual department. Please contact your academic department directly to find out if you qualify for an assistantship.
Intensive English for Internationals (IEI) The IEI program at the University of Memphis offers comprehensive study of the English language to students from around the world. IEI prepares students for entry into graduate and undergraduate programs throughout the United States. Additionally, the IEI program offers courses to international professionals living in the Memphis area to improve their working knowledge of English. The University of Memphis offers five eight-week sessions during the academic year. Classes are small and designed to develop communication and academic skills in English through speaking, listening, reading and writing. New students are tested at the beginning of each session and placed in the appropriate level. Full-time students study 23 hours per week.
IEI Course Offerings MORNING CLASSES Reading/Writing ($725) 5 days a week / 9 hours total per week Students practice reading and writing in a variety of genres, with an emphasis on writing from text. They learn strategies to increase vocabulary and improve reading speed and comprehension. Lower-level students practice the writing process and work on paragraph development. Upper-level students study paraphrasing, summarizing and are introduced to essay and research writing. Grammar ($485) 5 days per week / 6 hours total per week Students focus on oral and written grammatical structures. Different structures are introduced at each level and reviewed in succeeding levels.

AFTERNOON CLASSES Listening/Speaking ($320) At lower levels, students practice conversational skills and small group discussions. At higher levels, students work on academic listening skills, including note-taking and giving different types of individual and group presentations. MODULES 2 days per week / 4 hours total per week Each semester different modules on a particular theme or language skill are offered for students at the different levels. Modules may include, but is not limited to TOEFL preparation, pronunciation, American culture or film, IEI Newspaper, idioms or business communication.
IEI Conditional Admission International students interested in studying at the University of Memphis have the option to apply for conditional admission if they do not meet the English proficiency requirements. Admitted students will begin their studies in the IEI program. Upon successful completion of the advanced level with the recommendation of the instructors, they will be admitted to the University of Memphis for academic study. The students will also be asked to take an admission entrance exam at the end of his or her English study. Once these requirements have been met, the students may be transferred to the University of Memphis, and the student will begin studying at the University during the next available semester.

Application Process BECOME A MEMPHIS TIGER! •A pply for admission as an Undergraduate International Student (for both first-time freshman and firsttime transfer students) or Apply for admissions as a Graduate International Student (for those who already have at least a bachelor’s degree). • Pay the non-refundable application fee ($50 USD for undergraduate students and $60 USD for graduate students) at the time the application is submitted. • Submit your transcript(s) to a NACES-accredited credentialing company and have a course-by-course evaluation done from that organization. Freshman applicants should have a general education evaluation completed with a GPA calculation. The NACES organization must send your original documents along with their evaluation to the University of Memphis. • Submit a TOEFL or the IELTS test OR complete the Intensive English for Internationals (IEI) program to demonstrate English proficiency. Non-English-speaking countries. • Submit a certification of finances document, which establishes the ability to pay for school and support the student while studying at the University. • Provide health records within 30 days of the first day of classes showing freedom from Tuberculosis. (NOTE: All international students must purchase a health insurance policy or provide proof of government sponsored health insurance before they will be allowed to enroll).

Campus Life ACCOMMODATIONS With nine residence halls, students are able to choose from various styles of living, including single rooms, apartments, villas and married student housing. DINING SERVICES There are 16 restaurants and cafes which provide dining services on the main campus. HEALTHCARE SERVICES The Student Health Center is available on campus for students to receive routine care during the semester free of charge. Students are also able to purchase medications at the health center when sick. The health center also provides free psychological care to enrolled students. FITNESS CENTER The Campus Recreation Center offers group fitness classes, wellness and nutrition workshops and personal trainers. Students can form intramural sports teams. The fitness center features two Olympic-size swimming pools. Students may access the fitness center with a valid student ID. 10
TRANSPORTATION Students can take the Blue Line to get around campus and the surrounding areas for no charge. There are shuttles to restaurants, groceries and the Park Avenue Campus. The Blue Line provides shuttle services to special events and University sporting events. TIGER ATHLETICS The University of Memphis Tigers are Division 1 teams in the American Athletic Conference. The Tigers are also members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The men’s basketball team has seen 26 NCAA Basketball Tournament appearances. The Tiger football team has claimed five conference championships and played in nine bowl games. GET INVOLVED Students have more than 250 student organizations to choose from when selecting extracurricular activities. Some of the organizations include the International Student Association, the Asian Student Association and the Daily Helmsman (a student-run newspaper). There are also 26 fraternities and sororities on campus. All of the student organizations are great ways for a new student to meet new people who share their interests. 11
Our City In addition to the highly competitive academic and career opportunities the University of Memphis has to offer, students enjoy exciting city life throughout Memphis. There are rich historical and cultural assets such as the National Civil Rights Museum and the Memphis Heritage Trail waiting to be explored. Students can enjoy live music any night of the week in any genre from classic blues to country. There is a wide variety of restaurant and entertainment districts, some of which are pictured here. Memphis is also a growing biking and greenspace community with many parks and bike trails. MAIN ATTRACTIONS • Big River Crossing Pedestrian Bridge over the Mississippi River. • World-famous Beale Street is known internationally for its music, food and art. This street is just one of the many historic gems of downtown Memphis. • Highland Strip entertainment district is walking distance from campus. • Overton Square, home to restaurants, shops and nightlife is just a short drive from campus. • Shelby Farms Park is located in the heart of Memphis, and is five times larger than Central Park.
