At the UofM, you will find a comprehensive array of academic programs, outstanding faculty and a supportive environment conducive to graduate study and research.
As a major urban research university, the UofM enrolls roughly 4,000 graduate students in more than 120 degree programs, many of which are ranked among the best in the nation. Master’s degree programs are offered in 60 areas through seven colleges and four schools. The doctor of philosophy degree is offered in 26 areas through six colleges and three schools. The degrees of Doctor of Audiology, Doctor of Education, Doctor of Liberal Studies and Doctor of Musical Arts are awarded through three colleges and one school. Education Specialist and Juris Doctor (Law) degrees are also offered.

Dr. Gary Bowlin Herff College of Engineering
Memphis has long been a worldwide leader in the area of bioscience.
Putting Herff on the map in this high-tech field is Dr. Bowlin and his Tissue Template Engineering and Regeneration Laboratory. Bowlin and his team work tirelessly on research in tissue engineering, which is leading to products that drastically improve quality of life. Currently, Bowlin is closing in on advancements in cartilage repair.
Dr. Cyril Chang Department of Economics, Fogelman College of Business & Economics
Dr. Chang, professor of Economics, serves as the director of the Methodist Le Bonheur Center for Healthcare Economics. He also regularly conducts executive training seminars and workshops for healthcare professionals and executives. He has published hundreds of top-rated articles on a wide range of economic and health services research topics.
Dr. Melissa Janoske
Department of Journalism and Strategic Media, College of Communication and Fine Arts
Dr. Janoske’s research specializes in crisis communication. Her dissertation, which was funded by the Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence, detailed how online communities formed and aided individuals and organizations with crisis response and recovery. She has also published research on both crisis and social media.
Dr. Andre Johnson Department of Communication & Film, College of Communication and Fine Arts
Dr. Johnson teaches classes in African-American Public Address, Rhetoric Race and Religion, Media Studies, Interracial Communication, Rhetoric and Popular Culture and Hip-Hop Studies. He is currently editing the works of AME Church Bishop Henry McNeal Turner under the title The Literary Archive of Henry McNeal Turner.
Dr. Artina McCain
Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, College of Communication and Fine Arts
Described as a pianist with “power and finesse,” Dr. McCain enjoys an active career as a solo and chamber performer, educator and lecturer. She has played nationally and internationally with her performances airing on radio shows in Chicago, Austin, Toronto and Hong Kong.
Dr. Latrice Pichon School of Public Health
Dr. Pichon’s research focuses on exploring the role of the faith-based community in addressing HIV awareness and prevention, partnering with community-based organizations to understand HIV outreach, care and utilization needs among vulnerable populations and using the application of communitybased participatory research approaches.
Dr. Michael Schmidt Department of Art, College of Communication and Fine Arts
Dr. Schmidt, associate professor of Graphic Design and Graduate Program coordinator, specializes in promoting children’s health and rights through his designs. He has worked with organizations such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Duke Children’s Hospital, The Urban Child Institute, Shelby County Government and UNICEF Canada, among others.

In addition to dozens of scholarship and fellowship opportunities, you may also apply for a graduate assistant position. If awarded a GA position, you will work 20 hours per week in addition to your courseload. In return, you will receive tuition reimbursement and a monthly stipend.
