DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVITY Academic nursing is committed to advancing diversity and inclusion to improve quality of nursing education, address pervasive inequities in health care and enhance the civic readiness and engagement potential of nursing students (AACN, 2017). Diversity refers to a broad range of individuals; populations; social characteristics; geographic locations; national origins; languages; physical, functional and learning abilities; religious beliefs and socioeconomic status. Inclusion represents environmental and organizational cultures in which faculty, students, staff and administrators with diverse characteristics thrive (AACN, 2017). Diversity and inclusivity are critical and fundamental to develop a nursing workforce capable of providing high-quality, safe and culturally appropriate care. ADVANCING NURSING SCIENCE Nursing leads the way and advances health through collaborative efforts to achieve better population health, better health care and lower healthcare costs. Nursing practice aims to improve patient care outcomes by using evidence-based practice and continuous quality improvement.
