MEET OUR ORGANIZATIONS Dear Prospective Member, Since joining my illustrious sorority and becoming a member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, I have made memories and connections I never even thought possible. The Greek Life experience is different for each individual, but as long as you put into it what you want out of it, the experience is truly amazing. You’re able to grow as a leader and develop many skills as you serve your organization and community. Even though we all are members of separate organizations, we can come together as one to make up the NPHC and the Greek Life community at the University of Memphis. I am honored to be the president of the University of Memphis’ Interfraternity Council. The IFC community at Memphis consists of 7 chapters and over 300 men. Each chapter provides its own unique experience with founding values centered around leadership, brotherhood, and service. The IFC men at the University of Memphis are impacting the University daily and helping make Memphis a better place. You will see IFC men in on-campus positions like Frosh Camp, Orientation Guide, SGA, Tiger Elite, and much more. The IFC community is not only active on campus but in the community as well. Our chapters hold multiple philanthropy events and complete hundreds of service hours annually. National Pan-Hellenic Council Each NPHC organization operates on their own timeline and specific member requirements. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is the time commitment? Membership within a fraternity or sorority does require a commitment of time. Membership responsibilities and requirements range from weekly to semesterly. Students can expect to attend weekly chapter meetings, complete study hours, fulfill service hours, attend chapter events, social activities and more.
How much does it cost? Costs vary across all of our organizations. Membership dues can range from $200 to $1000 each semester as each chapter includes different activities and fees within their structure. To see a financial overview for each organization, please visit our website memphis.edu/greek
What are the benefits of Greek membership? There are endless benefits to Greek membership! It is the mission of all Greek organizations to produce successful leaders and provide brotherhood/ sisterhood that lasts a lifetime. Our students experience a great deal of personal growth through their membership which provides a plethora of opportunities related to leadership, service, professional development and more. It is important
to keep in mind that what you put into your organization is what you get out of it – staying an active member throughout your college career is sure to provide you with all the amazing benefits that a Greek organization can offer!
What about pledging or hazing? The University of Memphis, as well as all of our chapters, have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to hazing. Each organization has a new member education program that is designed to teach them the history, traditions, values and expectations of their organization. Hazing has no place in these programs and Fraternity and Sorority Affairs works closely with each local chapter and national organization to set clear expectations for new member activities. This includes setting reasonable limits on time commitments, activities, and length of program. If you have concerns that hazing may be occurring, we encourage you to contact the Student Leadership & Involvement to speak to a staff member. Additionally, we also have a place on our website where you can report a concern; every submission is thoroughly reviewed and investigated by Fraternity and Sorority Affairs in tandem with the Dean of Students Office.
