Memphis is an idea city that is known for innovation in the areas of music, transportation, logistics and medicine, to name a few. People come to Memphis to tap into that creativity and challenge the established way of doing things. Memphis is a city that dared to build a railroad bridge across the mighty Mississippi River. Memphis is where Danny Thomas came to build St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital because he dreamed of finding a cure for childhood cancer. And Memphis is where FedEx founder Fred Smith decided to set up shop, when he took on the U. S. Postal Service by inventing the idea of overnight delivery. The University that shares this famous city’s name also shares its entrepreneurial spirit. In the Herff College of Engineering at the University of Memphis, we are committed to finding unique ways to solve problems that affect people’s lives. We are establishing a culture where creativity and entrepreneurship are our way of life. We can promise that you will get your hands on some of the coolest research there is. Our engineering programs are small and personal, but the University at large has world-class research capabilities. We support our students in every possible way. Simply put, you will be inspired here at the Herff College of Engineering to do amazing things with your life and have an amazing impact upon society. That’s why creative minds come to Memphis. It’s why I came to Memphis. We hope you will join us in Memphis, too.
RICHARD SWEIGARD Dean, Herff College of Engineering
YOUR PASSION FOR NEW IDEAS WILL NEVER END, BUT WE KNOW WHERE IT BEGINS.
Just come to
MEMPHIS The Herff College of Engineering attracts students with curious minds. Interesting people. Creative brains. Renaissance thinkers. If that describes you and you want to use your math and science background to make a difference in the world, then you belong at Herff. People like you come to Memphis to attend Herff’s program because it’s transformative. It will totally elevate the way you think and the way you live. A bachelor’s degree in engineering is always tops in the rankings of highest-paying professions for students right out of college. Most of Herff’s graduates find entry-level jobs in their disciplines with starting salaries averaging around $60,000 annually. You probably don’t know right now what you’ll wind up doing with your life, but the place to start something remarkable is right here at Herff.
BLAKE HOWELL CAME TO MEMPHIS TO REALLY FEEL WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AN ENGINEER THROUGH HANDS-ON STEM RESEARCH. Blake came to the U of M undecided, but was quickly drawn to Herff because of the smaller classes and direct interaction with professors. But what really lit him up was the chance to do undergrad research. He participated in research that concentrated in data mining and machine learning to identify fraudulent sellers or spammers online. “This hands-on experience in STEM research challenged me to learn about a relatively new and very important field.” And Blake got a real feeling for what it means to be an engineer. The research opportunities at Herff give students the kind of skills that you just can’t get in a classroom setting alone.
“ I was able to do everything from formulating my own hypothesis to interpreting the data and writing a research paper. It was an invaluable experience that gave me insight into the vast world of STEM research.”
BLAKE HOWELL, Class of 2014 Electrical and Computer Engineering Major
TO LEARN ENGINEERING, YOU’VE GOT TO STEP OUTSIDE OF THE TYPICAL CLASSROOM.
Here’s what’s special about
HERFF All the finest engineering programs want all the finest students. You are in high demand, so you have a right to be picky. What you’ll discover when you look at Herff is something compelling: size matters. We don’t believe in the mega-huge engineering approach. Our intimate program gives you the kind of collaboration that leads to amazing work. Smaller class sizes mean you will collaborate on a daily basis with big-time engineers, professors, scholars and mentors. You won’t have to nudge your way up to the front of a crowded classroom to get the professor’s attention. You will get to know the faculty on a personal level. Rub elbows with them in research. They will know your name. No matter where you come from, our friendly campus atmosphere makes everyone feel at home. And we are regularly ranked the safest public university in Tennessee, thanks to innovative practices and 24/7 security patrol.
SURROUNDED BY THE BRIGHTEST — HONORS STUDENTS
To us, growing the program isn’t about more students; it’s about more students of the
HIGHEST CALIBER That is why we attract more honors students than any other university in Tennessee. Engineering majors dominate the Helen Hardin Honors Program at the U of M. But that’s not the only way to graduate with honors. Most departments within Herff also offer an honors program, separate from the Helen Hardin Honors Program. Both honors programs allow engineering majors to receive special recognition at commencement and have a degree conferred “With Honors” within your discipline. When you apply for and receive a spot in an honors program, you will quickly make close ties with friends who, like you, are very serious about their studies. Plus you will enjoy the many perks of being an honors student, like early registration, graduate-level access to libraries, honors-only study areas and honors-only computer labs.
AN EARLY START to
RESEARCH As one of only two public universities in Tennessee classified as research intensive, the U of M offers students remarkable research opportunities in graduate-level labs, while still in undergrad studies. Herff prides itself on the world-class research endeavors of our faculty. As early as your freshman year, you will likely be invited by faculty members or mentors to work on research or design projects that match up with your interests. You might also get the chance to disseminate your findings through professional publications and presentations. Get ready to dive in because the opportunities will be all around you.
ELIZABETH DUNCAN CAME TO MEMPHIS TO SPARK IDEAS THAT CHANGE LIVES. Memphis is internationally known as a biomedical center and an emerging biotech hub. So, Elizabeth knew that her love for biomedical engineering could take off from the University located in the city that has so much clout. “Right now I am working on growing mesenchymal stem cells. My advisor also taught me how to subculture cells.” Elizabeth has parlayed her Herff education into two highly sought-after internships with medical device giants located in Memphis, Wright Medical and Medtronic. Elizabeth handles a full engineering workload while learning to be a student leader. “I am the Honors Student Council President and Vice President of AED, which is a pre-health club.” At Herff, you can balance your engineering aspirations with other interests. Like Elizabeth, you can explore whatever your heart is telling you to do.
“ I have had exposure to amazing research at Herff, like a fibroblast study that could very well open the door to better wound healing options for people who suffer from Diabetes. That’s pretty powerful to say I had a hand in improving real lives.”
ELIZABETH DUNCAN, Class of 2015 Biomedical Engineering Major
Look no further than

PATRICE THOMAS CAME TO MEMPHIS BECAUSE HERFF BELIEVED IN HER LIKE SHE WAS FAMILY. Patrice was first introduced to Herff in high school when she attended a Girls Experiencing Engineering (GEE) camp at the U of M. Her emotional connection with Herff started that week, but even she had no idea how close she would become to the faculty here. “Anyone can teach, but few genuinely care.” Patrice feels that Herff is more than a school; it’s a family. Her faculty advisor and former professor played a monumental role in helping her choose her major and area of concentration. But it is her advisor’s compassion to see students succeed that Patrice thinks is truly special. “Her optimistic outlook is always uplifting. She motivates me to strive for exceptionally high standards and meet challenges that never before did I think I could reach.”
“ I honestly don’t know where I would be if my mentor hadn’t invested in me the way she did. I learned so much from her, not only in the classroom, but about life in general.”
PATRICE THOMAS, Class of 2014 Civil Engineering Major, Transportation Engineering Specialty

HERFF AMBASSADORS
These inspired students become the voice and face of the Herff College of Engineering out in the community, at industry/alumni events and while interacting with prospective students. It’s an honor to be selected, and students take their role in promoting engineering education personally and seriously. They live, eat and breathe engineering, and it shows.
YOU’RE COOL. YOUR MAJOR IS COOL. YOU DESERVE A COOL PLACE TO LIVE.
ENGINEERING LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITY (LLC) Every year, students compete for spots in Herff’s Engineering Living Learning Communities—one section for men, another for women. What’s cool about these residence halls is that you live in close-knit, caring communities with other engineering majors, with dedicated computer facilities, public spaces and study lounges just for you. Comfortable common areas can be used for seminars or other learning and professional development events that engineering majors won’t want to miss. And you will be living right in the middle of it. Research shows that grouping students together like this builds a natural support system that pays off in higher GPAs and higher graduation levels. That’s powerful stuff. We’re supporting you in every way possible to be the best you.
DOES HERFF EVER GET TOO INTENSE? Herff is a rigorous choice to make in college. So what happens if a course or particular area of study gets too intense? Herff has your back. If you ever hit a hurdle academically, not only will your mentors and faculty members go above and beyond to help you, but we have a built-in safety net with a free tutoring center. Even some of our strongest students can have weak spots, but Herff will support you all the way—unleashing the engineer that you were meant to be.
CHRISTOPHER STOREY CAME TO MEMPHIS TO KEEP BUILDING ON HIS SUCCESS. As an adult student with a wife, three kids and a company to run, Christopher wasn’t sure how he was going to manage the heavy load of obtaining an engineering degree. “The instructors at Herff care deeply about my success and have been very understanding and encouraging of my situation.” Herff turned out to be the right fit for Christopher in every way. As a freshman, he jumped in on a research project to design a concrete beam that was of sound strength, while still being cost-effective. His work was recently published. “It was enjoyable for me to be able to bring my years of experience in the concrete field into the college’s laboratory.” Christopher believes that the close-knit, collaborative environment at Herff has pushed him to be a better student, a better engineer. “The thing that makes Herff great isn’t necessarily the lab equipment or the curriculum, but it’s the people.”
“ I own a successful concrete construction company. But at the age of 30, I wanted to fulfill my dream of being an engineer. I remember peeking in on the different labs at Herff and imagining myself doing exciting work. Those expectations have been far exceeded.”
CHRISTOPHER STOREY, Class of 2016 Civil Engineering Major

DARIUS HANKINS CAME TO MEMPHIS TO LEARN ENGINEERING AND ALSO LEARNED THAT TAKING BIG CHANCES TURNS INTO BIG REWARDS. There was a moment when Darius thought engineering might be too tough for him. At Herff, the rigor is real and students work hard. During that pivotal time, Darius was supported by his faculty advisor to push through. “At midpoint of the semester I was riding the fence between a C and D. He was always there telling me to push a little more. I ended up finishing the class with an A.” Darius learned to take a chance on himself, and the end rewards couldn’t be sweeter. “I landed a cool internship in downtown Memphis because of the diverse skills I gained at Herff. Then I was offered a full-time position at another Memphis Fortune 500 company before I even graduated.” Darius is proof that a Herff education can help open some incredible doors.
“ When you are at Herff, it won’t come easy, but the journey and the people you meet will change your life forever.”
