As the summer winds down, students should be preparing for the upcoming year. If your student will be freshmen, take some time to discuss what you both learned at Orientation and how you can utilize this information to have a successful freshman year. Help your student look at fall classes and discuss a weekly schedule to help manage classes, studying, work and social activities. For returning students, take time to help them assess the past year and prepare for the coming year. Encourage them to think about participating in an internship or studying abroad.

What Parents Can Do Discuss realistic expectations for academic success with your student. Advise your student to develop an academic plan for their first semester. Encourage your student to stay in contact with friends made at Orientation—this will help ease the transition during the first week of classes.

August is a very important time of the year. Students should take time to settle into their new classes and make sure they get the books and supplies they need to succeed during this semester in college. College students experience much greater freedom than in high school. However, they are also held more accountable for their actions and decisions. Rarely does a professor ask twice for assignments or question absences. With an increased opportunity for distractions, time management becomes more important. Encourage your student to be responsible for his or her education. There is no better time than now to get your student off to a good start.

What Parents Can Do Encourage your student to always go to class, and use a day planner to keep up with assignments. Students can get a free planner at the beginning of each semester with their student ID in the UC. Remind them that attending study groups can be a fun and interactive way to get prepared. Let your student know that professors are available during their office hours, and they are there to help. If your student lives away from home, be understanding when he or she feels overwhelmed or homesick. Encourage your student to spend a month or more acclimating to college before returning home for the weekend.

The University gained university status in 1957 and changed its name from Memphis State College to Memphis State University.

Homecoming

Students often utilize the month of September to explore campus and get involved. Joining clubs and organizations looks great on a resume and can build great friendships that will last a lifetime. The University of Memphis currently has more than 180 Registered Student Organizations (RSO) and the numbers are growing every day. Your student needs ongoing encouragement as he or she goes through the college experience. As a parent, you know your student better than professors, peers or college staff, and you know his or her limitations. You are often in the best position to encourage and support behaviors.

What Parents Can Do Encourage your student to continue seeking new opportunities for growth. Be supportive and interested in your student’s experiences. Listen openly, honestly and without judgment. Talk to them about their interests on campus and in which events they may be participating, such as athletic events and musical performance.

At top right, the Pom Pon Squad performs at athletic events in addition to competitive events across the country. They won their 13th national championship in 2011.

In October, students begin experiencing exciting and challenging situations that they need to learn to handle on their own. As a parent, try to avoid rushing in; instead, think of the college experience as your student’s job. Offer support, answer questions and point him or her toward the right resources. Parents should use the opportunity to help their student become more independent.

What Parents Can Do Encourage your student to ask for help when needed. With mid-terms approaching, make sure your student sets time aside to study. Remind your student about free tutoring services offered by the U of M’s Educational Support Program. Students who consider dropping classes should remember their financial aid status, scholarship status (including HOPE), and the ability to stay on their parents’ health insurance, may be affected. Remind your student to see his or her advisor before spring registration which will begin in early November.

While the tiger has been the official mascot of the University since 1939, a live mascot was not acquired until 1972. The Bengal tiger was named TOM, which is short for Tigers Of Memphis. The current TOM is our third tiger and was presented to the University on November 22, 2008.

By November, exams and papers may begin piling up. Students can sometimes acquire poor eating or sleeping habits, increased stress and other factors that may require the help of Student Health Services. Keep in mind that an active mind needs a healthy body, so encourage your student to find ways of relieving stress, keeping active and staying healthy while at college. Remember, there are people at the U of M who want to help. Parents and students should talk about challenges that come up.

Be there! Students will often turn to the safety of family when times are tough, and it is important to know that you will always be there for them. Encourage your student to make time for exercise, healthy meals, and sleep. If your student is feeling physically ill, encourage a visit to the Student Health Center for a medical checkup. Make sure your student has registered for the spring semester.

The University Center, the heart of our campus, opened in March 2010. It is home to student organization offices, student services, a 24-hour computer lab, and dining options for students.

December can be very stressful for students as the semester comes to a close. If students need help, they should look to those who have experience with tests, be it their parents, brothers and sisters who have taken the same class, friends, or a tutor. The University has a dedicated staff of advisors who will do everything they can to help with scheduling, registration, and academic issues. You and your student may feel excited and anxious. It is important to remember that students keep their own schedule at school. This may conflict with parental expectations about family activities, so it is helpful to discuss these expectations prior to your student returning home.

Relationships are a focus during this month, and your student may need you to listen as they talk about experiences with friends and significant others. University of Memphis athletes have been winning championships since the school opened. On the right is Larry Finch, who played for the University from 1971 to 1973 and is still the second highest scorer record for basketball. After playing professionally, Finch coached the basketball team from 1986 to 1997 and is the all-time winningest coach of the Tigers.

The semester is now midway through and this is often a very exciting and busy time for students. Many plan to go away for spring break. Parents should remind students to be safe while having fun. Keep in touch with those they travel with and keep in mind that classes will resume after break. Remind your student that, while spring is a time for much social activity, balance is also important.

What Parents Can Do Keep in touch, but don’t call every day! Use e-mail, texting, and Facebook as an easy and convenient means of communication. Encourage your student to schedule an appointment with his or her advisor for the summer and fall semesters. Registration will begin in early April. Encourage your student to begin thinking about a summer job or internship. Advise your student to talk to his or her professors to assess course performance.

Stress the wisdom of approaching finals with the attitude of doing the very best he or she can, not worrying about what has or has not happened so far in the semester. Remind your student to register as early as possible in order to get the classes he or she wants for summer school and for the fall semester. Encourage your student to make time for exercise, healthy meals, and sleep.

The U of M offers a wide range of classes for students who are interested in getting ahead of the game. Taking a summer class is a great way for students to keep their academic skills sharp. Most classes last four to six weeks Although some students may find the rigorous pace of summer classes intimidating, the rewards of being closer to graduation can make it worth the extra effort.

What Parents Can Do Talk with your returning student ahead of time about your expectations while he is living at home.
