While the campus is in a quiet residential neighborhood, you are only minutes from all that the big city has to offer. drive about 7 miles west of campus and you’ll find yourself on the banks of the mighty mississippi river, with the funky rhythms of Beale street and bustling downtown businesses not far away. if you go about 7 miles east of campus, you’ll find yourself at shelby farms park, a stunning natural treasure—five times larger than nyC’s Central park—with lakes, wetlands, forests and endless recreational opportunities.

...intersects with one of the coolest cities in America.
memphis is where the blues were born and rock ’n’ roll was invented. With countless music and arts festivals, eclectic restaurants, our world-famous BBQ, Beale street and graceland, people travel from all over the globe for the chance to feel the memphis vibe, even if it’s just for a little while. our students get the chance to feel it and the experience stays with them forever. And if you want resume-building opportunities, memphis is where fedex, st. Jude Children’s research hospital, nike, AutoZone, hilton, international paper and more giants of business are headquartered or have a major presence. We were ranked by U.S. News & World Report as having one of the top 10 most successful internship programs in the nation.

the u of m is a world-class research university.
A lot of people come to the u of m thinking they know us well. they have seen our men’s basketball team on tv contending for national championships. they know our graduates and hire them every day. But behind the caps and gowns, behind the wins and losses, there is another amazing story to tell. our research capabilities are world-class and a role model for other universities. our unique relationship with the city means we can provide insights to issues that are very specific to industries in urban settings. for years, researchers at the u of m have been providing the data innovators need. We uncover opportunities and do critical work, serving as the catalyst for discoveries, inventions and knowledge that wind up as real products in the marketplace or as services benefitting the public. many of them go global.
46 separate research units on campus $152.4 million awarded in external research support since 2011
Carnegie Foundation designation as a high research Activity university
research at the u of m led to the development of one of the world’s most successful programs to reduce criminal activity, Blue Crush. We invented it here in memphis, but Blue Crush is now being used across the u.s. and in europe. the university of memphis | 2014-15 visitors guide

places on campus that make a difference
At the u of m, we continue to add amenities that keep up with what today’s students look for in college. Tiger Den With fresh food as its focus, tiger den offers tons of great choices, all in one place. try the nature’s market featuring vegetarian entrees, soup and salad bar and fresh fruit daily. the fire pit has grilled favorites and the World market serves up authentic ethnic dishes. there’s Café roma for pizza and pastas, deli depot for wraps and sandwiches and Comfort Kitchen for homestyle cookin’. ever popular with students, subway and Chick-fil-A, are also located at the tiger den.
University Center the gathering point for most things social. inside you will find a three-story atrium with a dedicated lounge area to decompress from hard days. here you can grab convenience foods, like Burger King Whopper Bar, taco Bell and dunkin’ donuts. there’s also a 24-hour computer lab, u.s. post office, copy center and offices for many student organizations.

our campus makes students feel at home.
the beautiful landscape of our campus surrounds students with the college feel they have been looking for in a setting that makes them know they belong. students are always just a short walk from friends, classrooms and activities. our residence halls are part of a Living Learning Community, which brings students together based on their major, so you live and learn with other students who share your academic interests. there are currently eight Living Learning halls on campus with more coming, because research proves that students in this type of campus living environment earn higher gpAs than those who don’t. each unit consists of bedrooms and baths. some include a large kitchen and common area, meeting and classroom space and practice space for music majors, as well as a personal work station and computer facilities. We also offer a unique Living Learning Community just for first-time students called fresh Connections, which limits each community to 25 freshman students allowing for them to build close connections in study groups and collaborate through this cool learning experience. they take a “packaged” schedule together and work with specially selected faculty to enrich their learning.

How did we become Tigers?
In 1914, the U of M football team was known as the Blue and Gray Warriors. After the final game of that season, a few students shouted, “We fight like tigers.” The nickname stuck, but didn’t become official until 1939. About 30 years ago, a live Bengal tiger, named TOM, started attending all Tiger football home games and other University events. TOM is housed and cared for by an outside organization and travels in a climatecontrolled trailer. The current tiger is TOM III, the third live tiger to represent our university in the past 30 years. The university also has a costumed tiger mascot lovingly known as Pouncer.

100 tigers marked 100 years. As you walk around our campus—or drive around town—you will see 100 Centennial tigers, which marked the university’s 100th year anniversary in 2012. While the pose for each tiger is the same, some of the area’s finest artists made each tiger a piece of art. All 100 tiger statues were sponsored by alumni, businesses and fans. the u of m Alumni Association developed the idea for the Centennial tigers as another way for the community to wrap their arms around this great university. there is something special about the relationship between the city of memphis and its hometown tigers. for more than 100 years, the u of m has been a big part of the creative vibe that makes memphis, memphis. And there’s no other place like it in the world.
