Mission FE STIVAL M IS S IO N We want our science festival to bring the joy of being with knowledge and creating it, and to give us the hope that thanks to science we can systematically repair the world where we live, thus making it a better place for all living things. The Festival’s mission is to stimulate social interest in science by inspiring cognitive curiosity in people of all ages. The involvement of ŚFN participants in learning science happens thanks to their active participation in shows, experiments, presentations, lectures and interviews. Our aim is to keep convincing people about the value of knowledge and scientific research, and their positive influence on the future of the world. We find it important that the residents of the Silesian Voivodeship should be aware of the scientific variety of their region and proud of having such great academic centres with thousands of
International Congress Centre in Katowice, to the Silesian Theatre, but also to streets, parks, museums and galleries, so that science and knowledge take over the city and become an attraction both for residents and guests.
WH Y WE D O I T Our goal is not only to present the scientific achievements of a region in Poland and of the world, but also to convince people that knowledge and science should be the foundations of the life which we share with all living things. Thanks to science and knowledge, the culture of conversation grows, argumentation improves, and we gain respect for facts and reliable descriptions of reality. Science proves that dialogue about the most difficult issues (not only cognitive, but also ideological ones) is possible. By organising the Sile-

ŚFN all year round It is very important for us that science communication and achievements of universities in the Silesian Voivodeship are not only limited to the few days when we meet at ICC. We want the potential of ŚFN to ‘work’ and bring results all year round, every day. Our goal is to keep the Festival audience connected with us between the subsequent editions of the event. Here is how we try to make it happen:
“ Su pern ova – Ś FN s c i en ti f i c s ubscrip tio n” n ews l e tter The Festival newsletter has a lot of popular science content and provides regular updates on the progress in preparing the fifth edition of ŚFN.
Ś F N s c i e n t i f i c ch a l l e n ge s We also encourage you to take up ŚFN scientific challenges prepared by our team – there are various tasks to perform (e.g. Goldberg machine design, vision of Silesia in 2030, educational board game design), but what they all definitely have in common is creativity.
We bi n a r s e ri e s In April 2020 we began a series of webinars on Wednesday evenings. ŚFN ambassadors and special guests, as well as scientists from the University of Silesia, run online lectures every week. Thanks to Facebook, it is also possible to ask questions to the lecturer. This form of science communication has proven itself very well during the social isolation period.
