The wakeboarding planet is growing each year. There are now over 400 cableways spread out across the world, with 40 five-pylon and 180 two-pylon structures being built in the 20122013 season alone. This explosion of new playgrounds has motivated us here at Unleashed Wake Magazine to come up with “THE GUIDE” of all the cable parks in the world. “THE GUIDE” is dedicated to the man who invented cableways some 50 years ago, a visionary by the name of Bruno Rixen who will be celebrating his 83th birthday this year. Also, big thanks to Christian von Lerchenfeld, owner of Sesitec, who pushed the sport into the next level with the System 2.0 “THE GUIDE” will be like a bible for all riders keen to discover new spots on the planet, and it will allow them to ride their favorite spots all year round just by changing hemispheres. But first of all, here’s a little history lesson. The first cableway prototype was built in BORDESHOLM, Germany, in 1959. After several prototypes, the company “RIXEN CABLEWAYS” built the first 5 pylon structure, which was put into commercial operation in COLTON, USA, in 1965. Cableways were initially used only by water skiers, and the “wakeboard era” would come much later thanks to Tony Finns’ invention “The Skurfer”. Skurfing, which was wakeboarding’s ancestor, was one of the most highly progressive sports at the time and would remain that way for the next decade or so. It’s by building cableways in highly populated areas that water sport complex owners have been able to reach out to a larger amount of riders, and these riders can continue to practice their hobbies at a much lesser cost. From OWC (Orlando Watersport Complex, USA), the first cableway to be transformed into a real “wake park” with floating obstacles built in 1985, to CWC (Camsur Watersport Complex, Philippines), the first wake park to be built with a permanent pool gap in 2007, but also Turncable, the first «full and complete» wakepark and finally to Terhills Cablepark in Belgium which was built in July 2013, the evolution of our sport is only just beginning. Cableways have become a virus in the world of board sports, and “THE GUIDE” is here to help people discover all of the amazing spots our planet has to offer. Happy reading and happy travels to all of you! Unleashed Team

What’s a «Cableway» A cableway has 4, 5 or 6 pylons. Pairs of deflecting pulleys are attached on the tower arms. The drive, including the coupling and decoupling mechanism is attached to one of these 13-15m long pylons. The skier’s tow ropes are coupled in carriers, which are fixed at the main cables. The start ramp is on a right angle to the running cables and the starting skier will be slowly accelerated. This is one of the patented solutions from Rixen Cableways. The skier will be pulled in perfect acceleration. He can carve turns under the running cable; ride slalom, ski, wakeboard, wakeskate, kneeboard, etc. And of course, wakeboarders can jump perfectly or perform tricks on funboxes, rails or kickers. The distance between the riders is 70 to 90m. The track is 45m wide. Suitable waters should have a minimum width of 90m and a minimum length of 170m to offer a profitable operation of the cableway. The minimum water depth is 1m and in the starting area 1,20m, demanded by the TÜV (Technical Control Board). Depending on the available water area, a cable length of 400m to 1500m is possible. The average cableway has a length of 600 to 900m.

What’s a «System 2 Towers» System two towers have been used in more professional level events around the world than any other. It can be used as a standalone solution, a great addition to a Full Size Cable, an additional revenue source for an existing business, or an attraction in other more traditional style venues. It has proven to be a rewarding investment and the simplest access to the sport of wakeboarding. The system two towers are by far the simplest and easiest way to learn to wakeboard. The upwards pull enables effortless starts and has proven to provide the steepest learning curve to beginners than any other tow device on the market. That system provides a continuous ride that not only provides the best learning platform for beginners, but also allows advanced riders to progress water tricks or improve their rail-riding skills more rapidly than traditional towing methods. It is simple to install, maintain and operate. Minimal operating costs and zero carbon emissions demonstrates that it is as sensible as is it innovative. With over 300 installations across the globe and a variety of different climates, the System two towers have emerged not only as the simplest but also the most reliable water sports tow device.

Bruno Rixen When I look back, there are many positive circumstances that contributed to my success, such as growing up in the country and in a family business environment that included a guest house, a colonial produce business and a small farm.

First I needed a 600 m long running cable with a diameter of at least 4 mm. A friend bought one for me. I obtained the deflection pulleys from a combine harvester belonging to my brother. I was allowed to use trees to suspend the cable at a height of 6 m, for which the forest ranger charged 3 DM.

When my father died in 1944, I had to take on responsibility at an early age and help my mother with the many To begin with, a borrowed Lanz Bulldog tractor was used additional tasks that needed to be taken care of. as the drive. Bruno Rixen Bredenbek Lake in Ahrensburg near Hamburg was a suitable lake, but unfortunately it was part of a landscape conservation area. However, this year there was no other alternative. I constructed my cableway with the help of my master mechanic and Ahrensburg assistants in order to operate it officially for money, since we also had to check the demand for the cableway and whether it could be operated profitably. The rectangular cableway was constructed using the minimum materials imaginable. The 3 deflection pulleys had a diameter of just 35 mm. The motor mast did not have a cantilever. It was therefore erected with a gradient of just 45∞. The diesel motor at the tip of the mast powered the two drive wheels, which now had a diameter of 70 cm. Each tow rope was brought back to the starting position individually using a small transport cableway. 4 carriers, each with 4 wedge clamps, were distributed around the 600 m long running cable. Each wedge clamp connected 2 cable ends together and ensured that the carriers would not slip. We were able to uncouple the tow ropes on the move, but were still unable to catch them. They fell into the water every time, and had to be brought back to the starting position by row boats. We managed to keep this temporary operation going in June and July, until a demolition order arrived because the cableway was not permitted inside the landscape conservation area. Another major problem therefore had to be solved. As I drove home one evening, I passed an old person’s home next to the lake, where I saw 20 chairs in 2 rows. I realised immediately that the old people had been watching us water skiing. I took a photograph and sent it to the head of the district authority with an explanation of the situation and the sporting value of water skiing. On the basis of this, we were granted retrospective permission with the condition that that we dismantled the cableway every winter.

However, it was no longer possible to obtain permission and carry out the construction work this summer. By way of compensation, the company owner provided funds of 30,000 DM for my own cableway in Niendorf on the Baltic Sea coast, where we had obtained permission for a 1200 m long square cableway. The two running cables were 7 mm thick, therefore three times thicker than in Bredenbek, and all of the cable pulleys now had a diameter of 700 mm. The Niendorf cableway represented the end of the prototype period. Although the main development of the water ski cableway was now complete, improvements are always being made on the basis of new experience. One example of this is the automatic tow rope system, in which a catch fork collects the ball cable. The small transport cableway transports it downwards to the operating stand, where the handle remains in the magazine and the ball cable is then deposited in the upper magazine. A total of 12 tow ropes can be kept here ready for starting, as is still the case. I erected the first cableway with automatic tow ropes and silent encapsulated diesel motor with my Spanish partner Humberto Armas in Benidorm on the Mediterranean in 1965. To date, 14 million kilometres have been travelled by water ski during the 68,000 hours of operation of this cableway. A few years later, I developed a pneumatic control unit for the automatic tow rope system. In order to make operation even easier, the cableways are now controlled using a frequency converter, which ensures that a speed of 0.5 km/h is adhered to exactly during championships. Our control unit also allows sales to be monitored remotely by owners who do not visit their cableways every day.

Another important development is our 2-mast cableway, which only requires 10 % of the water surface and the cost. Ideally it should be 150 m long, it only has to be 20 m wide, and is not just suitable for beginners but can also be used by experienced water skiers and wakeboarders. We often hire out these small cableways for short official events such as the Hamburg Alstervergn¸gen (Hamburg Alster Enjoyment), the Kieler Woche (Kiel Week) and the After the 2 years in Bordesholm and the 2 years in Bre- Bregenz City Festival. denbek it was clear that water-skiing with the cableway and also starting at full speed were possible, which had We are the global market leader, and were presented with been disbelieved for quite some time, particularly by the the Bavarian Export Award in 2010. The next stumbling block followed soon afterwards. The two running cables stretched by differing amounts. This had to be compensated for every month to prevent cable damage, but with the 16 wedge clamps of the 4 carriers this was too time-consuming in the long run.

Who’s who

Pat Panakos You started a lot of things in the world of wakeboarding, did you imagine it would all turn out like this? Wakeparks popping up all over the place, big air contests in wakeboarding etc? When I started wakeboarding, the feature side of our sport was almost non-existent. My passion was rooted in this side of the sport and it needed the most help, so I decided to make an impact there. Tony Robbins said «The only limit to your impact is your imagination and commitment». Your imagination is a very powerful thing. In my imagination, we are a lot further along than where we are now. I think we are behind with where we could be because some people in our industry had difficulties accepting change, and I think this is what slowed us down. I feel that the industry is now accepting and welcoming this side of our sport that we have focused on growing for the last 18 years. You were one of the first person to come up with the concept of flexboards, did you think that one day you would see flexboards invading every product range of every brand? I was not the first person to come up with the concept of flexboards. I really do not know who was. I do know that I tried drilling holes in the tip and tales of my red Hyperlite primer with the Japanese guys face on it. I told Paul Obrien what I was doing and Im pretty sure he said “do not do that anymore” (I could get hurt). Paul Obrien and Jason Standley were the ones who sent the first all-wood Roam board to the projects to let us try it. It had 90 degree side walls. Parks and I cut the edges on the board and then a group of us went out and rode it. Ever since then I can not ride stiff boards. Back in those days, what did people think of your idea of making a flexible board made out of wood? Well, it was not my idea but I loved boards made out of wood. There’s no better feeling. I do not think the general public agreed with me back then. Now there are some really great hybrid boards which use blended wood/foam cores that provide flex in the board. When it comes down to it, if your ridding features and your not ridding a board that flex’s...... your missing out. Every year, it feels like we’ve reached the limits of what is possible when it comes to our sport. Do you think we’ve reached them or can we still go further? We’re not even close to our limits. Sesitec is constantly working on whats next with cable systems. Every year we see feature set ups evolve with shapes and different materials being used. New aspects of our sport are being developed, like big air. Rider’s ability levels are increasing. Board manufacturers are making rail specific boards with better flex patterns and materials. We are seeing better events and park locations. What does a typical day in the life of Pat Panakos look like? I do not really have a typical day because of my travel schedule, but if I am home during the week it could look something like this. -4:30am: Wake up. Convince myself why I should be waking up -4:50am: Henderson’s 7 minute Bible reading / usually turns into 30 min -5:20 - 5:45am Get to office (best time to get work done because no one is up) -8am: Bdhal comes in, spend some time going over things with him. -9am-5am: Save the planet -5:30pm: Get home hang with the girls. -6pm: Family Dinner -7:30pm: Read books to Ever before she goes to sleep. -9pm :Spend time with Courtney or get more work done Do you think that wakeboarding is headed in the right direction? I entered this sport like some of those before me and many after. Broke with no access to the sport, until I was offered the opportunity to take a ride. The first time I rode a board on water I was hooked. With the help of friends, family and our Lord I was able to stay in the sport.

I truly feel that what we are doing with cables in our sport is the reason why we are heading in the right direction. ACCESSIBILITY and EASE OF USE is how we are growing this sport. I am excited to be working with Sesitec to help grow wakeboarding in the right direction. What are your thoughts on wakeboarding events these days? In your opinion, what type of competition format best represents modern day wakeboarding? I think ever since the Carnival event in 1999 the contest scene has been evolving. If you took a look back to what events were like pre 1999, you would agree that wakeboard events have come a long way. I truly love to work on one-off events, because you have more freedom for creating something amazing. Anytime you try and multiply events in a tour format it becomes very difficult for many different reasons. I think the Wake Skate Tour is the one exception. The way Silas is setting up the event can really be something special. My favorites I was fortunate to work on are WakeStock, Wake the Line, Red Bull Depth Charge, Red Bull Wake Lab, Red Bull Wake of Fame and the Red Bull Wake Open. Any of these events I feel were really great events. Format wise the Red Bull Wake Open was unique in that it split the event into disciplines in the sport. I feel it was truly the best representation of the whole sport of wakeboarding. With that being said, I feel we need different types of contest and not just one format or event. Some people think that wakesurfing saved the boat industry and that cables saved the wakeboarding industry, what do you think about that? I think there is truth in this. I really do not know if wakesurfing saved the boat industry, it does look like it is helping it. Family, this is what I feel drives the boating industry and it seems wakeboard boat manufactures found a sport the whole family can do together. As far as cables saving the wakeboard industry…Well, it is crazy to think that Since 2008, Sesitec has installed over 300 cable systems world wide, over 80 of those were in North America. In 2013 Sesitec installed 6 more Full Size Cable systems in the USA, which is close to 1/3 of the total Full Size Cable parks in North America. Sounds like growth to me. It’s really cool to be able to interview someone who has such an impressive past in the wakeboarding industry, but do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by all these new events? Some of the events we do are more than just a physical challenge. With Red Bull especially, they want the impossible, the never been done before. It’s what I love about that company. They push the limits. Of course I get overwhelmed sometimes with feelings of fear, doubt and fatigue. Those who know me, know that my grandfather was born of Spartan blood. I joke about this, but it is where I get me courage and strength. The truth is Philippians 4:13 «I can do all things through Him who strengthens me». What do you think of all these new kids trying to reinvent wakeboarding? Do you think «there just another bunch of mini mes» or on the contrary do you think «I’m sick of all these kids trying to reinvent things all the time»! I say «have at it». Wakeboarding is not mine or yours. Its everyones. If these «new kids» want to change something in our sport lets not hold them back, lets help them realize their goals. When do you think that our planet will have enough cableparks? NEVER Any last words? I will leave you and the rest of our industry with this.......... My daughter at the dinner table one night made me and my wife go «tips in» with her and this is what she said when we thru our hands up «ALL TOGETHER WE ARE BETTER».....think about it!

Who’s who

Christian Von Lerchenfeld Hi Christian, could you introduce yourself?

How do you explain the success of the System 2 towers?

Hey Raynald, well, I am wakeboard and cable enthusiast from the beautiful Bavarian Alps. I grew up at one of Germany’s first cable parks (opened in 1971) and spent all my days riding there (jumping and trick and slalom-ski back then, of course). When I got older I started to work at the park more and more until I managed the whole park at the age of 18. In an internship I had to do for my university I worked at Rixen Cableways and was hooked by the passion to build cable parks almost 10 years there. I had plenty of ideas of what to improve and do different, that’s why I started my own company Sesitec in 1992. From then, it was an incredible adventure to the company that we are today, with almost 30 employees and more than 350 clients all around the world.

The success comes from the possibilities it offered. Putting up a cable system that quickly, with two towers only, ready to ride the site within just one day. That offered such a big field of new locations and such a simplification compared to what it takes to get a Full Size Cable up and going, all this for just a little money but still much more capacity than a boat. And then we realized that this would mean something big for rail-riding too.

How did the idea to develop the System 2.0 come to you? We built a two-tower cable back in spring 1994, and another one in fall 94. Pretty much different from what it looks like today, although the principle of two towers was there. But back then there were no rails, almost no wakeboards in Germany, and nobody could imagine the potential this had. In 2007 we wanted to realize a great winch park at CWC, and realized that a winch is not the ideal solution. This is how we got back to the two-tower cable and engineered the System 2.0. How long did it take to finalize it? The development and testing process took about 8 months. I can still remember the first session we did at Wakepark Allgäu, with Patrick Viererbe, Benni Sühs, Pat Panakos, Matt Hickman and my sons. Nobody could believe that it is so easy to ride continuously and to get up on a board as a beginner.

What sized lake is good to run a System 2.0? This is what I meant, there is now so many different location it can be put up. On a beach front in the ocean, in that little pond behind your house, in a swimming pool, or simply in a little lake you can dig yourself. Obviously a good shape is when the lake offers enough space for easy and safe riding, and for many features! In numbers I would say: 120 to 170 meters long, 30 meters wide is quite ideal. The range goes from 40m till 270m. It looks like the System 2.0 helped the sport to grow with some contest like FISE, Wake the Line, Wake Open... When you created the system 2.0, was that something you thought of, or was it a surprise? Well, we realized this really quickly. Just a few months after the first tests, we did the first Wake Stock in Toronto, Canada. What Pat Panakos did there was just incredible. What’s your favorite System 2.0 park in the world?

How many System 2.0 have you sold since the beginning?

This is so hard to tell! I am happy about every System 2.0 that leaves our halls. I am really excited about the parks our team riders put up to push the sport (Shredtown, Reed Hansen, Kevin Henshaw). And then there are so many clients that are just running amazing businesses with a lot of passion and progression!

We have sold almost 300 now. Incredible if you think about that, this all started just a few years back.

Do many people buy a system just for themselves ? I mean «not for a business“?

Is the first System way different than a brand new one? What´s new?

Yes, this did start in 2009 already. Some did start private and later turned it into some small business, or even opened the door for a Full Size Cable later.

Yes it is! Everything has improved so much! The ladders, the construction for the motor head, for the deflection pulley, the carrier, the software. We are always working on big improvements, on simplifying. And this is why we have the most elaborate two-tower cable system from which all the other brands try to copy.

Any last words? Thanks a lot for the interview, I am really looking forward to the next years. We will continue to do everything we can to keep on growing wakeboarding.

Who’s who

Tony Finn Hi Tony, I’m guessing that every wake boarder knows that you created wakeboarding. But for those who are only just starting out in the sport, could you explain to us who you are and how you got the idea to ride a surf behind a boat? I used to live in Mission Beach, which is a skinny strip of land in San Diego with waves on one side, and a bay that’s good for wakeboarding on the other. So, when I was in college and delivering pizza to make money, I somehow thought about creating a business for people who wanted to surf behind their boat. I want to make it clear though, that I did not create wakeboarding. There were a lot of people that stood sideways behind a boat way before me. I was just lucky enough to make it into something I could spend my life doing. We figured out some innovative ways to make boards, improve them, and sell them all around the world. It’s been an awesome ride and wakeboarding stokes out millions of people every year!!! So, it’s pretty cool… When did you realize that it could be a real sport and even a business? I think that I always thought it was a real sport and a cool business. “If you do what you love, you will never have to work a day in your life” - some famous person said that, (possibly Confucius), and that’s how I have always felt about Liquid Force and wakeboarding. Today wakeboards are way different than the first ones you created. Do you think brands have found the ultimate boards for wake boarding? There is no way in the world that the ultimate board has been created yet. We are working on boards right now that won’t come out until 2017 that are lighter, stronger, have more unique flex and rebound characteristics, etc. We are relentlessly working to make the most innovative boards and bindings we possibly can, that’s what makes it so FUN!! How have cableways change the industry? One of the bummers about wakeboarding was that you had to be rich (or at least know somebody rich), to wakeboard. My first boat cost $1000, and I owned it with two other people.

So we have always wanted wakeboarding to be as accessible to as many people as possible. That’s why Liquid Force has been so involved in cables around the world for so long. It is so awesome that you can grow up anywhere in the world and come from kind of background, and for about $20 you can learn to wakeboard. In the states, we actually have Free For All, where you can come to the cable and ride for free one day each year. It is such a fun sport that we want as many people as possible to experience wakeboarding… That’s what cables and innovators like Bruno and Christian have done for the sport! Did the increase in the number of cable riders make you adapt and develop new wakeboard models? More flex, less stiff? We have been leading the charge with wood, different types of foams, and different construction methods to make the best cable boards possible for years. We developed our own Grind base material to make the boards slide great and be way more durable on rails. We can control the stiffness, flex and rebound in the tips, under the bindings and all over the board. We create boards for riders of all levels and styles, and will continue to develop more moving forward. It’s super fun to be able to continually develop new options for riders to use! I know that you surf and also wake surf, so how do compare those two sports? Similar? Way different? A real Mix? I have to say, real surfing is more fun than wakesurfing. But, wakesurfing is totally fun and a great, great sport. If you don’t live by the beach, wakesurfing is the next best thing! For you, what the biggest revolution in the fabrication of boards? The biggest revolution in making boards has been our ability to use a wide variety of materials… We use a ton of different construction techniques and CNC based applications to make some freaking sick stuff!!! Thanks for your time Tony, any last words ? Have fun and see you on the water!!!

Bernhard Hinterberger Country: Germany Town: Oberaudorf Date of birth: 07.07.1982 What is a good wakepark ? A recipe for a good Wakepark is the perfect mix of a well built cable with good tower height and rope length. Plus a nice place to hang out with some good food and some games like pool or fooseball. For obstacles, I like cables with a good balance of kickers, rails and transfers. Clockwise or anti-clockwise cable ? I like both turning sides. I’m goofy footed and the counterclockwise cable has the good corners and comfortable feeling that I’m used to. The clockwise cable gives you a perfect opportunity to improve your switch inverts with less swimming and offers you some new angels to hit obstacles and different pull for regular footed hits. 4, 5 or 6 towers ? It can be fun to ride a 4 tower cable sometimes :) but 5 and 6 corners are more comfortable to ride and offer more straights to set up obstacles without the swinging cable caused by other riders. It’s easier for beginners too, with less 90 degree corners. System 2 towers or full size cable park ? Both offer different opportunities for riding and obstacles. The 2 Tower system opened new doors for Wakeboarding and showed it to a much bigger audience. I like to ride both and enjoy hanging out at parks that added a 2 tower cable to their full size cable. Why do you wakeboard instead doing another sport ? I also do other sports like snowboarding and I love table tennis but Wakeboarding got me hooked the most. I think everyone has a sport that they do besides Wakeboarding to get in balance. Your best memory on your wakeboard: The best memory is always when you are stoked about learning a new trick or doing good in a comp. But it’s also when you travel with your buddies and experience new countries and cable parks. For me personally it’s just recently I was wakeboarding behind an airplane on a river. Your best podium memory : It’s not always the biggest comp that has good memories, it really depends on how the vibe of the event was. I have a few in my mind and I will never forget them!

Interview - Wakeboarders Legends

Nick Davies Country: United Kingdom. Town: Chertsey London. Date of birth: 20/06/1989 What is a good wakepark ? CWC, Liquid Leisure, Hip-Notics. Clockwise or anti-clockwise cable ? Anti-ClockWise. 4, 5 or 6 towers ? 5 or 6, perfect tension. System 2 towers or full size cable park ? Full size cable. You have more space to play around on. Why do you wakeboard instead doing another sport ? It’s a sick sport, get to travel and ride, learn new stuff have fun and get to do it as my job! Your best memory on your wakeboard: Riding for the 1st time after 11 months of from injury. Your best podium memory : Wakestock 2006 in front of the massive crowed just before Dizzie Rascal Played! Unreal!

About the Country

Belgium It took a long time for Belgium to get the authorizations necessary to build a cableway…nevertheless it didn’t take them long to build world-class parks! Due to their late arrival on the market, they benefited from the experiences of some of the best cables on earth, and that’s why Belgium now has some of the most incredible cableparks out there! David Vervenne, an emblematic rider from Belgium, has often spoken about his country as being a wakeboarding nation. These days, he is surrounded by fantastic cableparks that you should definitely go check out during your next wakeboarding trip. Could Belgium become the new capital of wakeboarding in Europe?

About the Country

France France has never been great at producing wakeboarding champions, with the exception of Laurent Peyrichou who won the world championship title in the Open category in 2006. Neverthless every year, we see more and more charismatic riders climb to the top such as Léo Labadens, Clément De Premonville, who was recently names “Rider Of The Year”, or even the legendary François Roy… With that being said, the number of cable parks being built in France is quiet impressive. Over the last 5 years they’ve been growing like mushrooms and French riders, as well as European riders, couldn’t be happier! Let’s not forget that France has now become the number 1 tourist destination in Europe! So during your next vacation, if you’re not too busy visiting the Chateaux or the wineries, then go and check out some of France’s wakeparks, as well as some crazy events such as the FISE…you will not be disappointed! Oh and the food is pretty great too!

Cable parks are flourishing one by one this year! Last April was the inauguration of the “Projekt Wake Park”, and believe me, it’s going to get widely known in the next couple of months. This spot isn’t just another system 2.0, it’s a park that is 100% dedicated to wake, and only to wake!

Obviously there is a system 2.0, but there’s also 2 boats ( one of them being a Mastercarft X2), a winch with a pool gap for wakeskaters and jet skis to tow wakeskaters and wakeboarders through a brand new jib line.

The inauguration was pretty incredible in terms of ridding intensity. There wasn’t a second where you didn’t see a rider evolving on the water. That the mission of the Projekt Wake Park, to become the Mecca of wakeboarding in France, and with the team that’s in charge of this project, you can be sure that this spot is defiantly going to be on everyone’s destination list for the summer.

About the Country

The Philippines The Philippines….where it all started! I don’t know if many of you remember Chris Grüner’s video “STATEMENT”, but let me tell you that this video made a huge wave in the world of wakeboarding! Most of us were discovering this insane wakepark by the name of CWC for the first time! With crazy obstacles, and a lake that was specifiaclly made for wakeboarding, other cableparks were going to have to step it up a notch in order to stay in the game…or fade out as many did back in those days. These days, you couldn’t imagine seeing a cablepark without obstacles, and this is thanks the Philippines! The Philippines have become a standard destination for wakeboarders, but the great thing is that they always have new surprises in store each year! So if you’re planning your next wakeboarding trip, then don’t hesitate any longer! The country is magnificent, the people are adorable and it the nature is breath taking!

About the Country

Sueden With its icy temperatures and its 6 month-long winter, Sweden isn’t exactly the first country that you think of when you’re booking your wakeboarding trip, except if you’re a snowboarder of course! But you know that old saying “cold on the outside but warm on the inside”? Well this definitely applies to Swedish people as they will welcome you better than anyone at one of the many feature-filled wakeparks during their short summer, which lasts from June til’ the end of September Wetsuits are recommended at the beginning of June, but the temperatures soon warm up as Sweden is known for having a short but hot summer. So with its 6 cableparks, Sweden has one of the highest numbers of wakeboarders in the European union. Who said the Swedish were only good at snowboarding?

Fagersta Cable Park is located in the heart of Sweden, approximately 2 hours drive west of Stockholm. The park shape was designed to give a tighter and more consistent pull. This is achieved by only one long run 155 meters (510’), and five lengths between 80-110 meters (260’-360’). This 6 tower clockwise cable layout gives the park a more individual ride and more options for obstacles. It’s an excellent park for professionals but also for beginners due to the greater turn angles and clockwise turn. The site is adjacent to a restaurant and camping grounds providing cabins and RV spaces. On site you will also find a big beach, skateboard miniramp, water slides, volleyball courts, mini golf, trampoline, running trail, sauna and more. Fagersta Cable Park was the host of Wakeboard and Wakeskate Cable Europeans 2013.

In 2013 the first cablepark sites were opened in Ireland!!! The Cable & Wake project was a pilot set up with two specific plans: Plan 1, get the first team in Ireland trained up for installation and operation of cableparks. Plan 2, run the 1st Irish Cable Wakeboard Championships. Year one was meant to be a training and event pilot with a lifespan of 2-3 weeks on the Titanic site. We organically outgrew this in the first few weeks. The facility has stood the test and held under the pressure of demand for wakeboarding in Belfast and shown us that this ‘little shop of watersports’ needs more! We love the growing realisation that we have only scratched the surface of the potential for this site and urban watersports in Belfast!!! For 2014 we have more than a few plans and as they unfold. The USA America has a long history of boat riding, but these days, it seems like cableparks are popping up all over the country! It’s not surprising that with riders such as Parks Bonifay and his brother Shane, the Soven brothers and Tom Fooshee, some world class wakeparks have been built in a really short time. Obviously there great wakeparks in sunny Florida, but more and more cables are being built accross the country, each better than the next! So just like the Philippines, Thailand or even Germany, the US has now become a top destination for all self-respecting riders.
