t UNM, our eyes are always on the future, and at the UNM Foundation, we are likewise taking philanthropy forward. Forward through the more than 34,000 private gifts received this past year. Forward through the 57 new endowments set up to fund future scholarships and other programs. Forward because of the recent graduates who’ve chosen to become budding philanthropists by joining the Cherry & Silver Society (see page 34). And forward by building on the University’s 125 years of excellence in education and research for the people of New Mexico and beyond. Those 34,000 private gifts totaled an incredible $87,630,520. On behalf of everyone at UNM, I sincerely thank every alumnus, friend, corporation, foundation and group for this outpouring of support.

This past February 28, UNM’s 125th anniversary, I announced a refresh of our campaign name to Changing Worlds 2020: The Campaign for UNM with an increased goal of $1 billion. I am pleased to share that as of June 30, 2014, donors like you have contributed an astounding $658,449,625 to our campaign since 2006 to shape the future through UNM. The diversity of ideas that is foundational to the success of New Mexico’s flagship university is evident in your philanthropy. Your interests range from supporting student success and patient care to funding research and scholarships, and from improving our campus to improving our state. An example of a unique, wonderful gift is the collection of world-class art received this year through The Mandelman-Ribak Foundation of Taos (see page 10). Donors inspire other donors. The founding grant by New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union was critical for Innovate ABQ (see page 12), and now other partners have joined this exciting project, helping us address two of our UNM 2020 goals—“Advance discovery and innovation” and “Accelerate economic development.” Read more about UNM 2020 online at unm2020.unm.edu. he UNM Board of Regents has delegated authority to the UNM Foundation Investment Committee to oversee and manage the endowment assets of the University and the Foundation. The pooled assets are combined for investment purposes and operated as a unitized pool known as the Consolidated Investment Fund (CIF). The CIF is managed in accordance with the Consolidated Investment Fund Investment Policy, which is approved by both the UNM Foundation Board of Trustees and the UNM Board of Regents.

CIF investments are guided by the concept of complementary managers who are responsible for specific asset categories and management styles in a diversified portfolio (see “CIF Asset Allocation” chart on facing page). The CIF finished the year with a market value of approximately $415.2 million, compared to $358.4 million a year ago, and an investment return of 16.7 percent, as compared to 11.3 percent the previous fiscal year. In addition to customary investment management expenses, a Development Funding Allocation (DFA) of 1.4 percent of the market value was assessed against each participating fund in the CIF for FY 2013-2014 to assist with operational expenses. The 1.4 percent DFA was reduced from 1.85 percent the prior year as a result of increased institutional support.

donors. Using Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) campaign counting methods, qualifying bequests, cash and in-kind gifts donated directly to UNM-affiliated units, as well as pledges meeting the criteria, are counted and recognized in the annual total.

Accounting Principles (GAAP). Unlike campaign reporting, gifts of bequests, cash and in-kind gifts donated directly to UNM-affiliated units, as well as pledges outside the criteria for GAAP, are omitted.

The art of a Gift Historic Gift of Art to Benefit UNM Programs By Jennifer Kemp and Todd Staats

here’s something artful about the way The Mandelman-Ribak Foundation chose to honor its artists, Beatrice (Bea) Mandelman and Louis Ribak, by giving their art a new life—and the way it selected UNM as the beneficiary of its purposeful unwinding. The result: a gift valued at nearly $8 million. To celebrate this extraordinary gift, the UNM Foundation hosted a reception this past May at the David Findlay Jr. Gallery in New York City, concurrent with the gallery’s exhibition Beatrice Mandelman: Taos Modernist, and a luncheon at University House in September. Both events served as tribute to the artists and expressed gratitude to the Taos, N.M.-based foundation, its board of directors and staff.

This transformational gift was made 70 years after the two newly married New York artists moved to Taos in 1944—a move that would greatly affect their lives, art and legacy. Beatrice and Louis were already well known artists before moving to Taos. In the early 1930s and ‘40s, Louis regularly exhibited in New York. He participated annually in the Whitney Museum’s Exhibition of Contemporary Art , and in 1934 was chosen to represent the United States in the Venice Biennial. In addition, Louis assisted Diego Rivera on the Rockefeller Center lobby mural and worked with the Works Progress Administration (WPA) as a muralist. Beatrice also worked with the WPA, most notably as a printmaker in the Graphic Division of the New York Project. In the 1940s, her prints were included in exhibitions at the Chicago Art Institute, New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Her prints remain in these museums’ permanent collections today. While the couple’s move to Taos removed them from the mainstream art world, it gave them the freedom and inspiration to evolve their artistic styles and to truly begin anew. Captivated by Taos, they drew inspiration from its vast landscape, color and light, and they felt at home in the mountains and diverse cultures of northern New Mexico. When Louis died in 1979, he left behind an extensive body of work from the 1920s through the 1970s, which included paintings, drawings and hundreds of sketchbooks— artworks depicting a lifetime of observations of the natural world and reflecting a lifelong dedication to art. In 1997, Beatrice established The MandelmanRibak Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to the preservation of the couple’s artistic legacies and the support of the arts in New Mexico. The following year, Beatrice passed away

“Mandelman and Ribak were pioneering artists in the modernist movement in New Mexico,” explained Alexandra Benjamin, executive director of The Mandelman-Ribak Foundation. “Bea was aware of their pivotal roles and sought to find a place that could preserve and make accessible their artworks and archives. In her own mind, that place was always the University of New Mexico.” This past June, The Mandelman-Ribak Foundation gifted its collection of more than 900 Mandelman and Ribak artworks and hundreds of sketchbooks, prints, drawings and personal papers to UNM. Many of the works will enhance UNM’s art museums, providing art researchers insight into the modernist painting movement in New Mexico. Over time other artworks will be sold to bring the work of Mandelman and Ribak to museums, galleries and collectors throughout the world, with proceeds benefiting

the art programs at UNM. The MandelmanRibak archive materials have been transferred to Zimmerman Library’s Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections. Once cataloged, these materials will be accessible to the University community, citizens of New Mexico, as well as researchers and scholars worldwide. “As the beneficiary of this gift, UNM will become stewards of this collection of unique and significant artwork and archival materials. It allows us to preserve and share the immense legacy of these two important artists with others,” explained UNM Associate Provost and Distinguished Professor of History Virginia Scharff. “This wonderful gift will not only enhance our knowledge of the modernist movement, but it will also make UNM a major repository for research by artists and historians.” “UNM is honored to be the beneficiary of this treasure,” said UNM President Robert G. Frank. “This gift honors the legacy of Bea and Louis, and will continue to benefit the students and programs of UNM into the future.”

Credit Union’s Gift to UNM Boosts Economic Collaboration Effort By Wendy Antonio and Todd Staats

magine a place where you can live, work and play; where smart, creative people from diverse backgrounds bump into each other in the course of their day, and serendipitous collisions of ideas and actions are commonplace. That’s the idea behind Innovate ABQ, an economic collaboration project spearheaded by UNM to create a high-density innovation center and economic development district in downtown Albuquerque.

New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union Serving New Mexicans’ financial needs since

The city and other government entities are now on board, but it was New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union (NMEFCU) that stepped up as the first founding partner of Innovate ABQ with its $3 million gift in support of the project.

NMEFCU is a longtime supporter of UNM. Its giving is consistent and widespread. In fact, the member-owned financial cooperative has given almost $5 million in gifts to dozens of University programs since 1985, including the Presidential Scholarship Program, UNM Hospital and Children’s Hospital, Athletics, Colleges of Education and Nursing, Schools of Medicine and Law, Taos and Valencia campus programs and Popejoy Hall.

Albuquerque already has key elements required for sustainable job creation: UNM, a nationally competitive research university with an associated teaching and research hospital; high research national laboratories; leadership from the city’s mayor, and a committed business community. This initiative combines these elements to create an economic ecosystem to nurture creativity and encourage job growth. “Innovate ABQ connects our local research community directly to private and government resources in a small, efficient environment,” said Laudick. “Based on early results from similar projects in other states, this collaborative approach is incredibly effective.”

Sustaining Student-Athlete Success

(1984-1988), also served as chair of the UNM Hospital board in the early days of the Health Sciences Center’s growth. Mindful of the value of participating in sports, he watched with great interest as the Lobo Center for Student-Athlete Success developed. Couple’s Gifts to UNM Libraries Preserve the Past to Serve the Future By Hilary Mayall Jetty

NM President James F. Zimmerman (1927-1944) realized that the University could achieve national prominence by building on the strengths and living traditions of its connections with Spain and Latin America. He actively recruited leading scholars and created a center for Inter-American (later, Latin American) Studies. Zimmerman knew that a robust expansion of related library holdings was essential for faculty, research and instruction. “He was both pragmatic and visionary in providing the impetus and funding for acquiring important materials,” noted Russ Davidson, former curator of Latin American and Iberian Collections at UNM’s Zimmerman Library. “After all, New Mexico had spent more time as part of the Spanish empire than as a U.S. territory and state.” Russ’ introduction to Latin America, a 1960s Peace Corps experience in Panama, led to a 25-year career at the heart of UNM’s main campus—and the recent establishment of two major endowments in the College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences. Honoring the foresight of UNM’s seventh president, Russ

“The collection has a full range of materials and formats,” Davidson explained, “from rare books, periodicals, microforms, posters and pamphlets, to manuscripts, maps, photos and digital resources. The holdings in art and art history are particularly strong, ranking among the top three nationally. People come here from all over the world to access these materials.” Russ’ appreciation for historical and cultural materials was kindled in the 1970s, while pursuing a PhD in history with a Latin American concentration at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. There he met and eventually married Revathi Ananthakrishnan, a sociology student from India. His dissertation research took the couple to Colombia, where Russ explored the National Archives in Bogotá. “I loved working with manuscripts and rare books as physical objects,” he said, “and the associations that old materials possess really intrigued me. So I decided to get a degree in librarianship and pursue a career in special collections, in a library that emphasized Latin America.” At the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Revathi earned her master’s degree in public health and Russ received his library science degree in 1978. His focus and timing were fortuitous—the following year he became a “Latin Americanist” at Zimmerman Library. book dealers. Howard Karno, a renowned Latin American bookseller, became a trusted friend and ally in the search. In tribute to their long and productive association, Russ established The Howard L. Karno Endowment for Latin American Pictorial Collections to enrich the holdings of rare visual resources. “The Karno Endowment secures much-needed funding for this specialized and often expensive focus on the visual arts,” said Suzanne Schadl, PhD, curator of Latin American Collections at UNM Libraries and one of Russ’ successors after his 2004 retirement. “This sets UNM’s Latin American collections apart from other notable libraries’ holdings, while embracing New Mexico’s commitment to the arts.” Michael Kelly, associate dean for scholarly resources and director of the Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections,

acknowledged Russ’ contributions. “Russ’ intellectual and resourceful development of UNM’s Latin American library collections, and his generous philanthropy, will continue to support scholarly research for many decades to come,” he said. Members of the New Horizons Society and the Tom L. Popejoy Society, the Davidsons also fund a Presidential Scholarship in Spanish and Portuguese at the College of Arts and Sciences, thanks to Revathi’s delight in having taken six years of Spanish classes on campus. They intend to create another Presidential Scholarship in music at the College of Fine Arts. As for the couple’s significant gifts to the UNM Libraries, Russ remarked, “A collection will stagnate if it isn’t renewed, and it can only be renewed if people put resources into it. One has to find something they believe in, something the University excels in, or potentially will excel in. For me, this was a natural.”

A Legacy of Generosity

Entrepreneur Eugene Garcia’s Spirit Lives on through Gifts to His Community By Michele Sequeira and Todd Staats

didn’t complete elementary school, Garcia came to value knowledge and was a lifelong learner. His interests motivated him to read extensively about construction, engineering and business management.

f not for the noble intentions of the trustees of an impressive yet unheralded charitable trust, few would ever know of the extraordinary generosity of an unassuming entrepreneur who made his fortune in the construction industry: Eugene (Gene) Garcia.

Born in Trinidad, Colo. in 1904—eight years before New Mexico became a state— Garcia was already herding sheep for his family by the time he was 10, spending days at a time out tending the flock. Although he

Upon Garcia’s death in 2002 at the age of 98, two trusts were created to dispose of his extensive estate: the Eugene Garcia Charitable Trust, which gifts earnings to five organizations (see infographic on facing page), and the Eugene Garcia Charitable Remainder Trust. The latter was created to benefit Garcia’s only living relative, a niece, during her lifetime, after which the proceeds would benefit the same charities as the former. Garcia left behind a brief narrative of his life with the trustees, who eventually felt that more people should know of Garcia’s posthumous generosity to the Albuquerque community—so, they reached out to share his story.

Garcia’s self-directed education paid off. As a young man, he started a construction business in Albuquerque and soon began

landing increasingly larger jobs. Eventually, he and his wife, Marie, moved to Arizona at the beginning of World War II for a military construction project. Upon their return to New Mexico, still in the early 1940s, Garcia met with representatives of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers regarding top-secret work needed in Los Alamos. After extensive negotiations, Garcia agreed to take on the project to construct buildings for power plants, a diesel plant, boiler systems and other mechanical equipment, all for a mysterious job that was referred to only as the Manhattan Project, which was later revealed to the world as the mission that developed the first nuclear weapons. Garcia overcame many setbacks during the grueling project. In one instance, a truck bringing a diesel engine from Texas wrecked between Española and Los Alamos, knocking the bottom out of the engine’s crankcase. Rather than moving the engine to Los Alamos and risking further damage, Garcia and his crew built a machine shop by the side of the road and worked from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. to complete the repair.

In another example of his ingenuity, Garcia needed to get water from the mountain top to the laboratory site— through 12 miles of steep, forested terrain. He and his crew had one week to construct the water lines. They divided into several teams, stationing themselves every two miles along the route. They completed the work early, just in time for the arrival of Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, who later became known as the “father of the atomic bomb.” Garcia gave the University of California-Berkeley physicist a tour of the laboratory projects his company had constructed. Oppenheimer was apparently pleased.

After the war, Garcia continued to bid and win construction projects, in part because he developed methods to accomplish tasks that others couldn’t. In one project, he and his crew painted the outsides and insides of two smoke stacks, each more than 200 feet tall. No one else had been willing to take the job. Garcia worked at his now-defunct company, National Sales Inc., until he was 92. He retired to care for Marie, who had been diagnosed with cancer. A private man with only a few close friends and no children, Garcia felt strongly about supporting New Mexico institutions. He set up the charitable trusts so that he could give generously, in perpetuity, after his death.

Even well into his 90s, while in an assisted living facility in Albuquerque, Garcia was sharp as ever and continued his zest for business, according to Mike DeVenzeio, a trustee and a vice president in Wells Fargo’s Wealth Management Department in Albuquerque. Garcia loved the art of the deal and even insisted on personally negotiating the sale of his former Albuquerque home overlooking the Rio Grande. “He was a master negotiator,” said DeVenzeio. “It was a game to him.”

urck and Sandra Bailey have a deep love for their adopted state of New Mexico. Burck, who enjoyed a career as a prominent trial attorney in Oklahoma, wanted to make a tribute to his profession in a way that would help as many people as possible. With their establishment of an endowed scholarship fund though annual contributions and a planned gift to the UNM School of Law, the Baileys illustrate how the generosity and foresight of two people can ripple outward and touch the lives of many. The Burck and Sandra Bailey Scholarship in Law is designed to give Native Americans, African Americans, and Hispanics financial assistance to attend the state’s only law school. “The UNM School of Law has an opportunity to make a difference in these New Mexico populations,” said Burck. In turn, these recipients “have the capacity to bring so much to this state.”

Burck, a New York University School of Law alumnus, and Sandra, a Fort Hays State University graduate, became connected with the UNM School of Law when they connected with then-Dean Kevin Washburn, also from Oklahoma. As the Baileys became reacquainted with Washburn, they felt increasingly impressed with the quality of the UNM School of Law, its academic programs and administration.

“They really utilize their funds,” said Sandra. “There’s no fluff. They are very dedicated to their student body. At this time in history, law schools are losing applicants; the UNM School of Law is not.”

“A retired law professor from the University of Texas and I taught a class at the School of Law, and I was quite impressed by how dedicated and smart the students were, how much they wanted to accomplish,” Burck added. “Both of us come from families that had hardly any money, but they always shared,” said Sandra. “We hope our example encourages others to be generous with their support. That would be an ideal consequence.” The School of Law will name the first recipients of the Baileys’ scholarship beginning with the class of 2016.

n 2000, the UNM President’s Club began with 31 charter members, and was chaired at its inception by Doug and Sarah Brown. Today, the President’s Club continues to be an influential group that makes a real difference at UNM. Together, its members provide funds to support important initiatives that require a flexible and timely response. The Stay-A-Lobo program, which provides emergency grants to keep students enrolled at UNM, is a perfect example of this responsiveness. Now in its second decade of providing a dependable source of flexible annual support to the UNM President’s Office, this group’s additional unrestricted giving provides support for a broad selection of areas across campus that are vital for the core priorities of the University: Student Success, Systemic Excellence, Healthy Communities, and Economic and Community Development. any of New Mexico’s brightest and most involved high school graduates study at the University of New Mexico each year because of the UNM Presidential Scholarship. For 39 years, the Presidential Scholarship Program (PSP) has attracted and retained these students at UNM. Presidential Scholarships are awarded to New Mexico high school seniors based on grade point average, class rank, college board scores, personal essays, peer leadership and community involvement. Scholars come from a wide range

Endowing a Presidential Scholarship requires a minimum $50,000 gift. There are currently 84 endowed scholarships, which provide 234 PSP scholarships in perpetuity. Donors may also give to the PSP through the “Share-A-Scholar” program by making a gift of any size. Such gifts are combined to fund additional scholarships.
