Who are we?

UNM is New Mexico’s flagship university.

UNM Board of Regents established the UNM Foundation Inc. in 1979 as an incorporated nonprofit corporation to develop private financial support for UNM. In 2008, the Foundation transitioned to a stand-alone, selfgoverned 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Assets total in excess of $539 million today.

UNM Foundation history In order to develop private financial support for The University of New Mexico (UNM), the University’s Board of Regents established the UNM Foundation in 1979. The Foundation began operating in Spring 1980 for the purpose of raising, investing and managing private gifts on behalf of UNM. In 2008, the UNM Board of Regents and the UNM Foundation Board of Trustees approved separating the Foundation’s operations from within the University. This new structure gave the Foundation more organizational strength, cohesion, and stability. Through this structure, the Foundation is interdependent of the University with its operational budget provided by the University and the Board of Regents but maintaining its non-profit 501(c)(3) status.

The Foundation has its own Board of Trustees which is comprised of 25 members from public, private and academic arenas. Additionally, the Foundation employs approximately 80 staff, has its own operating policies and systems, and has financial accountability for gifts made to the University.

Through this structure, UNM and the Foundation have doubled its gift revenue. In the 2003-2004 Fiscal Year, contributions to UNM were $41.5 million. In the 2019-2020 Fiscal Year, private contributions to UNM were over $94 million.

UNM Foundation Leadership Jeff Todd, President and CEO

Jeff Todd joined The University of New Mexico (UNM) Foundation in September 2019. He has over 35 years of higher education advancement leadership experience. Prior to joining the UNM Foundation, Jeff served as the associate vice president of alumni and executive director of alumni UBC for The University of British Columbia. During his tenure at UBC, he served as the co-director of UBC’s start an evolution campaign that raised $1.624 billion and engaged more than 130,000 alumni. He also served as interim vice president of development and alumni engagement for UBC. Previously, Jeff was the executive director of the alumni association and director of alumni relations for Oregon State University; executive vice president for The University of Arizona Alumni Association; and director of The Wooster Fund and director of alumni relations at The College of Wooster. Throughout his career, Jeff has been actively involved with the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), Council of Alumni Association Executives (CAAE), and the Canadian Council for Advancement of Education (CCAE). He served on the boards of all three organizations and, most recently, as president of CCAE. He received the CASE Crystal Apple in 2009 for teaching excellence, among other recognitions. Jeff earned his degree from The College of Wooster.

Board of Trustees The UNM Foundation Board of Trustees is comprised of up to 25 community members. Members include The University of New Mexico President, UNM Foundation President and CEO, two University of New Mexico deans and a member of the UNM Board of Regents.

The impact of giving to UNM In the last five years, more than $460 million in private support has been given to The University of New Mexico UNM and the Foundation raise an average of $94.3 million per year

How do we meet these goals?

The UNM Foundation’s responsibilities include: Supporting UNM by executing best practices and approaches to fundraising.

Receipting gifts.

Investing and managing endowed funds for the benefit of the University.

Comprehensively reporting all gifts throughout UNM, including UNM main campus, Health Sciences Center and Athletics.

The Foundation exists solely to serve UNM by raising and managing private investments: Board of Trustees with 25 members from public, private and academic arenas.

Employs around 75 staff members.

Has its own operating policies and systems.

Has financial accountability for gifts made to the University.

UNMF’s Consolidated Investment Fund The Consolidated Investment Fund’s (CIF) performance was impressive, gaining 31.3% or approximately $137 million of investment growth over the last fiscal year. The value of the CIF portfolio as of June 30 was $580.3 million.

The CIF distributed $18.3 million to support students, faculty, research, programming, and patients.

More than $8 million from the CIF investments is distributed to UNM students annually through scholarships. When combined with current use funds, the Foundation distributed $40.5 million to UNM in FY 21.

Operational funding The UNM Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization which benefits all departments of the University through support for student scholarships, faculty excellence, research, program support, facilities improvements and patient care. The UNM Foundation’s operating budget comes from a variety of sources, including a the University of New Mexico and an assessment on the Consolidated Investment Fund (CIF). This funding model ensures that 100% of donor gifts received through the UNM Foundation are directed to the donor’s designated purpose.
