HELPINGYOURSTUDENT COMBATSEASONAL DEPRESSION Seasonal AffectiveDisorder (SAD) isaformof depressionthat poses achallengefor manycollege students, especiallyinthe Midwest whenwinter months bringdiminisheddaylight. SADtypicallybeginsinlatefall andcanlast for months. College students, alreadyfacingacademic stressduringthisperiod, mayfind themselvesgrapplingwithmore severesymptomsof depression likeextremefatigue, changesin appetite, andsocial withdrawal.

UNOCOUNSELING& PSYCHOLOGICALSERVICES Encourageyour student to spendtimeoutdoors, even duringthecolder months. Support healthyhabitslike abalanceddiet, adequate sleep, andregular physical activity. Suggest activitiestohelp your student staysocially connected. If symptomsof SAD persist, encourageyour student toseeksupport fromaprofessional.
