MANDELA Son of Africa, Father of a Nation to celebrate Nelson Mandela Day, on Thursday, 14 July 2011 - 6:30 pm at the Goethe Institute

If ever a world leader seemed born to take up the cause that would define his life, it was Nelson Mandela, the South African leader whose story is chronicled in Jo Menell and Angus Gibson's biographical film, ''Mandela.'' As one after another colleague, former wife, family member or friend recalls, Mr. Mandela, who is descended from royal blood, always had singular leadership qualities and a pronounced kingly aura. ''Mandela'', is an officially sanctioned biography whose subject was interviewed extensively and who allowed the film makers into his home. The film also sheds light on the little-known early period of Mandela's life, including his childhood, adolescence, career in law, and first marriage. In addition, we learn about Mandela's winning, resilient personality during those hard times, and how it served to forge a man capable of liberating his country from racial oppression. "Directors Jo Menell and Angus Gibson give us an up-close and personal portrait of this hero… This inspiring and edifying screen biography celebrates Mandela as a freedom fighter and a liberator – the father of a nation." -A brief introduction will be made by the South African Embassy and The United Nations. The film is in English and has a runtime of 108 min. No entrance fee.
