Voices of Children in Emergencies Syria Education Briefing Note A joint ECHO – UNICEF Campaign
for EU-UNICEF Partnership
About the Campaign UNICEF and ECHO (the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid & Civil Protection department) launched on 15 May 2014 a joint campaign to raise awareness on children’s voices in emergencies in partnership with six EU-based National UNICEF Committees. The initiative is coordinated by the UNICEF Brussels EU Office with the support of UNICEF National Committees in Greece, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Slovenia and Spain. The social media-based campaign aims to enhance awareness and understanding among European citizens on the challenges faced by children in emergencies. The campaign already generated high visibility. To date, 8 million European citizens have shared the voices of these children through their own digital networks. The campaign has already reached over 143 million people through other media.
About the Stories The campaign captures the stories of children who have lived through or are still living in crisis. These stories are shared through social and media networks of participating UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors as they lend their voices to the children. The campaign has a special focus on children in Jordan, Chad and the Philippines, where joint efforts through the EU-UNICEF partnership helped to bring relief in emergency situations. Along with the international Goodwill Ambassador Ewan Mc Gregor, the campaign has also been actively supported by national Goodwill Ambassadors with a European and international reach, such as: Paul Gasol (basketball player), Robert Lewandowski (football player), Bostjan Nachbar (basketball player), Evanna Lynch (actress), Imanol Arias (actor), Pavlos Tsimas (journalist) and Gaia Amaral (TV presenter and actress).
