PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE We are proud to have our tenth issue of Jaycee Herald. Jaycee herald is providing a platform for all of us to put in your creative efforts. Keep contributing and we can make this small bulletin a worthwhile read. Through the month…. August started off with Prathibha Puraskar for the new season. It was a great feeling to stand before the citizens of tomorrow of Paremakkavu Vidya Mandir to hand over JCI Trichur’s Prathibha Puraskar to a multi-talented girl Jhanvi Jairaj. Our Programme Director Jc. Ajay Kumar and the entire team of Jc’s present at the venue were overwhelmed by the reception we received from the school authorities. One of our main event of JCI Trichur calendar, Kindafest 2015 drew in around 600 participants and it was very heartening to note that all the stake holders, the participating students, the parents, the sponsors and our own dear members were happy with the event. It was a great team effort, around 30 of our members could handle a crowd of around 2000. Special appreciation to Jc. Ajay kumar, Jc. Varghese Paul, Jc. Sanoj V V and Jc. Manoj K V for the efforts they have taken to support the program director. Program Director Sudhir Achuthan has one more feather in his cap with a stunning performance in this Kindafest. Sudhir is turning out to be a great man- manager and we all appreciate this great leader. I thank all Jcs, Jcrts and JJs for the wonderful effort to make our organization proud. Five of our members participated in GEM 2015 which was the Business meet of Zone XX. JCI Thiruvaniyoor really raised the bar on the way it conducted the business meet.

Our vice president Jc. Ajith Kaimal and his fiancé Prajitha proved their social commitment as they sponsored a lunch for the inmates of “Snehalayam” a place for socially forgotten people. It was great to see such a social commitment from such young people. Salute to their good thinking. Four of our members cleared “Effective Leadership” training course conducted JCI and I thank Ranjith Kollanur for the necessary guidance and congratulate the newly qualified leaders. Executive Vice President in charge of Zone XX, Jc Rajashri Bhaje visited Thrissur and a very good number of members represented JCI Trichur in the Multi-chapter meeting which was attended by Zone President Jc. Sudhin Ashok and other Zone officials. Jc.Ranjith attended Nalanda 2015 and was one of the star performers in the event. Our socially committed Secretary Jc. Sajith Paul and Jc. Joffin continued their social activities during the Onam celebrations and as always contributed to the society in a larger way. Our Jcrts and JJs had an engaging month as their preparations for our JJ Night is in full swing. I would like to appreciate the efforts taken by all Jcrts led by Swapna and Lakshmi for their great initiative. I and Ranjith participated in JCI centenary celebrations in Hyderabad which was organized in a grand way. JCI Trichur was recognized by the National President for the contributions to Jaycee movement for more than 25 years. S R Pai foundation also recognized JCI Trichur for our efforts in the Jaycee movement for more than 25 years. We celebrated Onam with the students of our adopted school, GLP School, Perumanoor and distributed story books to all the

students. Also, we celebrated Onam in Bethany School, Kunnamkulam by distributing Story books and by participating in school’s Onam celebrations. I would like to thank Jc. Ajay and Jc. Sudhir for their efforts. Let me conclude this month’s note with a nice story.. A Lonely tree was growing among hot sands of dead desert. Prickly sands covered the Wood. The Sun mercilessly burned its bark. But the Tree kept on living in spite of all. One day a Hawk flew over the desert. The Hawk saw the Tree and sat on its branch. He looked around the desert and said: — You are a strange Tree, why do you keep on living among these dead hot sands? Who needs you? — You, — the Tree answered. — Me? — The Hawk was surprised. — I don‘t need you. — But if not me, — the Tree told, — you would have to sit on the hot sand instead of my branches. If not me, someone, seeing you sitting on the tree alone, would say that nobody needs you, too and would ask you what you live for. Sitting on my branches you, Hawk, think that I need you. The Hawk thought about it and had to agree with the Tree. If there was no Tree, the hawk would feel himself alone and useless among this vast desert.

Everyone is important and is there because of a reason. Let us respect others and get respect.. Thanking you, Yours truly Jc HGF CA Manoj Kumar.M President

From the shelves of JCI Trichur Library The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino

Publisher – Hachette; Year of Publication – 2011; Pages – 373 The Devotion of Suspect X is not a conventional murder mystery. Like all murder mysteries, it starts with a murder. A mystery writer can then entice the curiosity of the reader by giving out more clues as the story moves forward, but all the while adding more impediments to frustrate the inquisitive reader. A good writer can keep the reader hooked till the end when all is revealed, only for the exasperated reader to realise the overlooked clue that could have exposed the answer. But then there is also a sense of failure for the writer. All the evasion has come to naught.

Keigo Higashino waives the accepted formula. He reveals the murderer at the beginning. But rest assured, it is very much a murder mystery. It is just that it has been turned around on its head. Centered on two scientists - a physicist and a mathematician, the book revels in the competition of the two brilliant minds.

The mathematician, the antagonist, true to his profession, relies on simulating the future and preparing ahead for it, waylaying the attempts of the police to identify the killer, while the physicist attempts to break down the simulation and reveal the underlying truth. Caught between them is the detective set out to solve the crime. The reader gets to read two novels at the same time. One is the usual murder mystery, the side of police or the reader as both try to solve it. The other side is that of the criminal or the author as both try to evade their opponent. In mystery novels, the author often has to identify themselves with the criminal. Only then can they make the novel more challenging to the reader. But it is rarely that we get to see both sides of a mystery in play. While the original book was written in Japanese, the English translation appeared to be a bit over explanatory in parts, but it captures the emotions running in the story spectacularly. Mystery novels have often held a certain enchantment with most readers, especially murder mysteries. But they often get mixed up with crime novels. Unlike a crime novel, a mystery novel has a limited set of characters and relies only on the clues revealed in the book to arrive at the solution. The reader is expected to be able to solve it and there are times when the reader bests the author. The quality of the novel, though, is not based on how quickly the solution is obtained, but on the ability of the novelist to get the reader to think deep.

Keigo Higashino delivers a classic work of mystery. It takes a careful reader willing to read from the beginning and wait till the end to realise it. JCI Sen. Ranjith Kollannur [For more information on JCI Trichur Library, log jcitrichur.org -> Individual Development -> Library]

ONE COUNTRY, MANY YEARS! FINANCIAL YEAR UNDER THE COMPANIES ACT 2013 T.M. Ramachandran. BBS, LLB, MBA, FCS Company Secretary in Practice 1st FLOOR, SAJI NIVAS OPP. RDS LABORATORY Dr. AR MENON ROAD, NAICKANAL THRISSUR, KERALA 680 001 INDIA Mobile:- +91 98460 93998 E mail: iamramantm@gmail.com

Section 2(41) of the Companies Act, 2013 has very clearly defined the term ‘financial year’. This amendment to Companies Act 2013 has brought in to align with the provisions of Income Tax Act 1961. As per section 2(41), financial year in relation to any company or body corporate, means the period ending on the 31st day of March every year, and where it has been incorporated on or after the 1st day of January of a year, the period ending on the 31st day of March of the following year, in respect whereof financial statement of the company or body corporate is made up. This means, a private or public company’s financial year should start from 1st April and end on 31st March of the next year. If it’s a newly incorporated company then we have to look into the date of incorporation. If incorporation date is before 1st January then financial year ends on coming 31st March otherwise it will be the period ending on 31st day of March of the following year. For example, if a company is incorporated on 6th January, 2015 then financial year as per section 2(41) would be starting from 6th January, 2015 and will end on 31st March 2016. Instead of 6th January 2014, if it is incorporated on 22nd December 2014 then financial year will be from 22nd December 2014 to 31st March, 2015. Section 2(41) further specifies that if a company or body corporate is a holding or subsidiary of a foreign company and for this reason they are required to follow a

different financial year for consolidation of its accounts outside India then Tribunal if satisfied, may allow any other period as the company’s financial year, whether or not that period is a year. Companies or body corporate, existing on the date of commencement of Companies Act, 2013, shall comply with this section within a period of 2 years from such commencement and align with the new financial year ending on the 31st day of March. This means a number of companies, including large ones such as HCL Technologies (which follows the year ending June) and Ranbaxy Laboratories (which follows the calendar year) have to adjust their accounting cycles in coming days.
