To advertise call 01963 400186 Local teacher’s 24-hour football challenge for motor neurone disease charity

Matt Smith, teacher at Dumpton School, whose brother was recently diagnosed with motor neurone disease, has just started a fundraising campaign. Matt will attempt to dribble a football for 24 hours (or 100 miles) at Dumpton School, Wimborne on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 March. Monies raised will be split between the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) and to support his brother’s care. Matt’s brother Paul is a huge football fan and as a child played for Grange Athletic FC, represented Dorset and signed associate schoolboy forms for AFC Bournemouth until aged 16. Therefore, the idea of a 24-hour dribble felt like a fitting way to help raise awareness and money for the IMNDA. Some pupils from the prep school will be coming along to support Matt’s challenge on the day as well as friends and family. Matt would be incredibly grateful for any donations and further details may be found on his Go Fund Me page https:// gofund.me/fa0e7fcb where you will also be able to read a little more about Matt’s brother Paul, and his tremendous determination to raise awareness of this life-changing disease.

Shaftesbury and District Royal British Legion Centenary

By Faith Eckersall

Shaftesbury and District Royal British Legion is celebrating its centenary this year and wants more people to show their appreciation for the Armed Forces by getting involved. The branch has 140 members and 16 committee members. It says there are believed to be more than 55,000 ex servicemen and women living in the county of Dorset. A spokesman said: “You don’t have to have a connection to the military to become a member, we welcome everyone, whether you have a connection to the Armed Forces or not.” There will be vacancies on the committee from November 17 which include Chairman, Poppy Appeal Organiser and Poppy Appeal Assistant. The branch holds coffee mornings every Thursday from 10am until 11.30am at the Legion Hall in Coppice Street (adjoining Tesco’s car park). There are also monthly presentations which include a ‘free’ lunch (with donations welcome). The club also holds bingo sessions on the last Friday of every month (Friday February 25) with light refreshments and a raffle available, from 7.30pm Annual membership starts from £18 per year and includes the following: l Priority access to tickets for the Festival of Remembrance l Access to purchase members-only products from the Poppy Shop and a 15 per cent discount on other products. l A five per cent discount on Remembrance Travel tours l For membership enquiries contact David Taylor the Membership Secretary on 07720 443319

Law reform needed on assisted dying

Advertising feature

My Death, My Decision is holding a meeting in the Lecture Hall, Mere, on Saturday, March 12 at 11am to talk about law reform on assisted dying, particularly about safeguards and the “slippery slope” which give some people concern. We know that the vast majority of the British public want a more compassionate assisted dying law, as the head of one of England’s largest hospices says: “ so that 6000 people a year don’t die in unnecessary suffering”. One British person a week travels to Switzerland for an assisted death. We think they should be able to have a safe, legal and dignified death at home. Two women were arrested last week for accompanying Sharon Johnston to Switzerland, even though Sharon had been on BBC Wales saying that she planned to end her life this way when it became unbearable to her. Sharon should have been able to seek medical assistance to die at home, with her family at friends at her side.
