Business Time for a community Domesday Survey
The White Horse pub in Stourpaine
By Adrian Fisher MBE We can all think of instances where it’s not so much the size of a piece of land that matters, but where precisely it is situated. The White Horse pub in Stourpaine is the social centre of the village. But it is landlocked, and when staging open-air Shakespearean theatre, it’s a very tight fit to hold it in the pub car park. Yet a quarter of a mile away, the Stourpaine village playing fields are extensive. Wouldn’t it be magic if we could unzip the earth, and slide an acre across, so that the White Horse had a splendid pub garden, and the community could greatly flourish? Similarly, properties with extensive acreage come onto the market from time to time. Sometimes part of the land is adjacent to a village school, which could really benefit from some extra land. Provided such land is properly valued and paid for by the school, anyone selling such a property would still achieve the same total price. The Bryanston Club is another type of property with extensive premises. It could become a Business Hub in our post-covid world of not commuting 50 miles, five days a week. By being just a couple of miles away from Blandford, people could work there two or three days a week, and save on commuting. Again, it has very little land around it; with more land, its use could be transformed. Let us conduct a Domesday Survey of every such community building, and maintain a register. If any adjacent piece of land comes onto the market, there could be scope for the community building to have First Refusal (all other things being equal), rather than let the opportunity slip forever. The proper value of the land would still have to be paid. But in some instances, it is the act of granting planning permission which causes the value of the land to skyrocket 500% or more. So let’s draw up that register now, and start seeing some pro-active planning. It’s only a few years ago that several houses were built on land adjacent to the car park of The White Horse. That particular opportunity has now been lost forever. Let us work to ensure that no such opportunities are lost in future.

DO THE MATH: Lottie Trump with the Cubie maths programme which was created, designed and developed in Fontmell Magna
It all adds up... Cubie is sum achievement in early learning
It’s the maths equivalent of reading for 15 minutes a day –and it’s set to change thousands of children’s lives for the better across the UK. Cubie is a screen-free early years maths programme created, designed and developed in Fontmell Magna. For just ten to 15 minutes each day from Monday to Friday – or whenever they wish – Cubie provides children with the skills and reinforcement in maths that they don’t get anywhere else. And all from the comfort of their own home! It’s the creation of Lottie Trump, a teacher for ten years, who developed the programme with the support of her husband Ben and a team of teachers and maths specialists. The first Cubie boxes will be delivered in time for the new academic year starting next month. The programmes run in line with the national curriculums for reception, year 1 and year 2. They follow the academic school year, running from September to August (including the school holidays). Children receive a new Cubie box which contains everything they need for 15 minutes of learning each day, every month. The box includes: n Four children’s work booklets n A new reward poster n Reward stickers n Pencils n A parent’s book full of top tips, answers and more Currently three levels are offered (A, B and C) which are suitable for children aged four to eight years. Lottie, who lives in Fontmell Magna, said: “With Cubie, children can work at their own pace and even recap the previous year’s work to ensure they have a solid foundation. “We understand that all children work at different rates and want each one to be able to access maths with confidence. “Therefore, any child can work on any Cubie level, according to their requirements. “Cubie is a fun and motivating way for children to learn whilst boosting confidence at the same time. “The ‘little and often’ approach is key to learning and Cubie provides just that: 15 minutes of child-led totally screen-free learning. “Cubie is the maths equivalent of reading for 15 minutes each day.” Lottie, 35, said moving from teaching to one-to-one private tuition had shown her the benefits of the ‘little and often’ approach as well as the use of repetition and the reinforcing of key concepts, She added: “Cubie was born as a way to help parents help their children. “From the earliest stages of a child’s educational journey, confidence is key. “Cubie is a complete mathematical programme which aims to instil confidence and a joy of learning maths from the off. “It’s created and developed to help as many parents as possible support their child’s learning and development.” Lottie married Ben three years ago and they are expecting their first child in December. She said the decision to launch Cubie was made at the end of 2020. A company – Cubie Education Ltd – was incorporated and an “incredibly talented” designer set to work on the booklets and accompanying materials. All the printed paper and boxes used for Cubie are made from FSC accredited or recycled paper sources and are recyclable. The boxes are sourced from The Dorset Box Company at Three Legged Cross. Lottie said: “There are more formal teaching books available but we believe that no one is doing anything like Cubie. “It’s colourful, fun and designed to be done by the children themselves. “The layout is clear, simple, colour coded and easy to follow. “Icons are used throughout to show the child what sort of action is required on each page. “The minimal instructions allow for the development of a child’s intuition and skills. “The workbooks give parents a child-led, screen-free approach to home maths support which are all paper-based and are delivered straight to your door for your convenience. “We’re using social media to spread the message and also School Notices, the independent school community and noticeboard. “After months of planning it’s very exciting to get to this stage.” Final orders are now being taken for the September box. Order by Sunday August 22, to take advantage of the special offer: two months free when you purchase an annual subscription.
