Engines all ready to roll for this year’s
By Karen Bate
newsdesk@ blackmorevale.net
When Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show organiser James Cox asked Louise Hall if it might be possible to bring the steam engine to the this year’s show, the answer was a resounding ‘yes’. As show secretary of the Berwick St John Country Fayre, organiser of the charity trailer rides at The Great Dorset Steam Fair and partner to Richard Pocock who has steam in his blood, Louise knows a thing or two about the steam engine and what work is needed to bring steam to the show. And in these ‘strange’ times, understands the importance of working together. Louise said: “Of course I agreed to rally the troops and see if local enginemen were willing to be part of this new section at the show. My quest was met with enthusiastic excitement, having not had the opportunity to display their ‘toys’ for the past 18 months or so.” Prepared and so pleased to be able to open their shed doors in support of this rather special agricultural show, numbers and interest gained momentum. So for the first time in the show history, a steam parade will be taking place for show goers at the two-day event. Louise said: “James and I are delighted to now be able present an enlarged steam area showcasing local engines representing fine examples of the age of steam, and thank all exhibiting engine owners. “The engines on display represent an age gone by, relics of the past, which, are much loved by their owners.

show, thanks to some top steamwork
There will be a real sense of agricultural history at the show, beginning with heavy horses which were used to pull farm implements, then to the steam era before the introduction of mechanisation of which there will be displays of vintage tractors as well as the modern machinery driven today. Engines will road to the showground some with their historic living vans in tow behind which will also form part of the steam area.” Well-known steam commentator Andrew Semple from Shropshire, will take the microphone for the steam parades around the main arena to entertain and enlighten the crowds of the history and mechanics of what they see before them. Described by many as needing to be treated as their other woman in their lives, these engines require care, attention, much nurturing and are to be treated with tenderness and respect. The steam world is a special family of its own with the enginemen and crew knowing every detail of their engines history in working days and now in preservation. Louise added: “Please do call by the steam area and talk to the team who will all be willing to share their knowledge and experiences with you. We are all delighted to be supporting James who is full of energy and enthusiasm at this year’s Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show and we hope very much steam may become a regular attraction in the years ahead.” n Berwick St John Country Fayre is on Saturday, September 18. The 500E... good in a tight spot
Fiat 500E Cabrio La Prima at Vale Motors
Road test by David Armishaw
After a spell of good weather, of course it’s a rainy Friday evening when I pick up the 500E Cabrio from Vale Motors in Wincanton, for my 昀rst drive of an allelectric car, and of a Fiat 500. Designed and launched in the 1950s as an affordable car for the people, the 500 was hugely popular and went through several evolutions until production stopped in 1975. Reborn in 2007 this hugely popular auto design icon has sold more than two million worldwide, so far. Like all modern re-boots, the little Fiat is not as little as its predecessors, but it still carries the all-important 500 styling cues, nods to its iconic past, with clean lines and a hint of aggressive wheel arch added to the mix. The little Fiat isn’t my normal type of drive, I am a bit of a die-hard petrol lover and generally favour more horses under the bonnet, but I also like to think of myself as progressive and I love the idea of electric motors – in particular their acceleration! The ‘E’ has a completely new platform, electric only, and I think it’s a great step. Inside, I found the 500E to be really spacious in the front, but still giving that nice feeling of cocooned security. The eco-leather seats are comfortable and the dash is tidy with a 10.25 inch central display screen offering plenty of options and functionality. It’s modern and suits the car’s new electric roots. The boot? It’s not the biggest but it’s adequate for the size of car, it’s not designed to be a load-hauler. One little word to the wise, it took me several attempts to get out of the car before I realised the handle had been replaced by a button, adding to the streamlined styling of the interior. The 昀rst thing I notice when I start the car is, of course, no noise – a little disconcerting as I can’t tell if it’s ready to go. But select drive, press your foot and yes, it was on! I am mightily surprised by the acceleration, 0-30 or 40 feels really quick, everything past 40 feels quick enough, and the top speed is 93mph, which is plenty. During my weekend with the car I found, as you might expect, the Fiat has a tight turning circle, it’s great for parallel parking in tight spots and, for when the sun comes out, the roof goes all the way back, down below the back window position. The model tested had the larger 42kwh battery giving a claimed range of 199 miles, and it achieved this, even with a heavy right foot. On an ‘urban cycle’, at lower speeds in town, the range can extend to as much as 277 miles. When charged at 85kw you can get 30 miles from 5 minutes of charge and reach 80% of fully charged in 35 minutes. Charging times for electric vehicles are certainly coming down, a key consideration for this market. This Fiat has picked up awards to shout about including great quotes from What Car?, Autotrader and Auto Express. The 500E starts at £23,495 with a 118 mile range. The model I drove comes in at £33K.

Don’t forget to take drinks along to help all your passengers keep cool on hot journeys!
Important to keep your cool on the road this summer!
Summer has arrived and vehicles need to be checked during these hot months, especially if you are going on lengthy journeys. The majority of vehicles now have air conditioning, this can be used in the Summer to keep the cabin cool and in the winter to de-mist your windscreen, I keep my air conditioning on all year round. You need to be aware that there are two different sorts of gas, R134A, this is the old style gas and R1234YF which is the new style gas, there is a big difference in price so always check which gas your vehicle uses and the amount it holds. If you 昀nd the air conditioning isn’t working, it may just need re-gassing as vehicles can lose approximately 100g of gas a year, or you may have a leak. Your local garage should be able to tell if your vehicle has a leak, a nitrogen test can be carried out which indicates a leak or a dye can be added to your system and a UV light can be used to locate the leak. There are three major components that can leak, the 昀rst is the compressor, the unit that compresses the gas and pumps it around the system, this component can also fail electronically. Secondly there is the condenser, this closely resembles a radiator and it does a similar job, it cools the refrigerant. Situated at the front of the vehicle, it can be damaged by road debris, or can corrode. Lastly there is the evaporator, hidden behind the dashboard and it is responsible for the very cold air that comes through the air vents. So now your vehicle is nice and cold, other checks that need to be carried out are, the coolant level – vehicles can overheat in the summer especially if you get stuck in a traf昀c jam. Always carry a bottle of water in the vehicle for emergencies. If your vehicle overheats, pull over in a safe place and wait for the vehicle to cool down. DO NOT attempt to open the radiator cap or the coolant expansion bottle before it cools as you may be hit with a wall of hot steam. Once cool, 昀ll up with water and drive to the nearest garage, do not attempt to drive too far as the vehicle is likely to overheat again, ideally don’t drive it at all and seek road side assistance. Other small checks to be aware of are, washer 昀uid, check the reservoir is full as roads in the summer can be dusty and 昀ies can make a mess of your windscreen. Also check your lights, people tend to forget to check bulbs when they go out on a sunny day, but if you are returning later that evening you may need to use your lights. Keep safe out there on our roads and I hope everyone enjoys the summer months!
