Increase value with good garden design

From grand design to garden make overs, making the most of your outside space enhances your lifestyle and increases property value and appeal. Let’s start by creating an outline plan of your existing site. Measure the width of your house, noting the windows, doors, bays and sideways. Measure the length of each boundary line and the width of the rear boundary. Use these measurements to draw an aeriel view of the back of your house and garden on A3 graph paper using a scale of 1cm to 50cm. Add the features that are staying, such as large trees, summer house or pond, and draw these to scale. Consider the elements and proportions you want in the new garden such as terrace (roughly 30%) and lawn (roughly 50%), planting and vegetable areas, playhouses, trampolines, seating, pergolas, lighting and power. We will now look at overlaying your new elements, shapes and ideas onto your outline plan. You will need some A3 tracing paper to place on top of your outline plan so that you can play with placement of the main features of your new design. I would start with the terraced area, ensuring that it is big enough for your garden furniture/ barbecue, and thinking carefully about your access routes. Now consider the shape and size of the larger elements you require and where you could place them in your garden. Are these a feature or should they be hidden? Do they need sun or shade? Avoid the common mistake of placing all your elements without considering the final shape of your lawn or central area. These ideas at present only deal with two dimensions, so add interest with height. This can be achieved by introducing pergolas, sculptures, statues, large trees or specimen shrubs. Also consider the flow of the garden, considering pathways and views from the house. Create at least four of these working drawings, playing with shapes, scale and placement of the main elements. Next time… we’ll develop these working ideas into two strong design concepts for both visual impact and budget consideration. A strong trade for the Hensbridge herd

PB Weeks & Son of the Hensbridge Herd Herd Dispersal Report: The dispersal of the ‘Hensbridge’ herd of Pedigree Holstein Friesian cows on behalf of local client PB Weeks & Son of Laverton, Bath, had been greatly anticipated by not only local farmers, but from dairy buyers from further afield. The sale was conducted by Symonds & Sampson and joint auctioneers Cooper & Tanner at Frome Livestock Market on Wednesday. A strong trade was anticipated for this high -yielding, closed herd bred for strength and depth. Autumn calving and loose housing didn’t put buyers off, as the younger 1st – 3rd lactating cows regularly made £1,600-£1,800. Top spot went to ‘Hensbridge Useful Honeybee 2’ who calved in July 2021 and is in calf to ‘Aristocrat’ in August, selling at £2,120. She was closely followed by ‘Hensbridge Upright Jackie’ also being in her 1st lactation and due in August selling at £2,100. The milking herd as a whole sold for an excellent overall average of more than £1,450 per head. A terrific consignment of in calf heifers due in August sold for an average of £1,421, with the top two sired by Martini & Ardor each selling for £1,575. Greg Ridout, partner & auctioneer with Symonds & Sampson extends his thanks to the Weeks family for their kind instructions to act on their behalf, and to all the team at Manor Farm for their tireless preparation in the lead-up to Wednesday’s successful sale. Symonds & Sampson’s Agricultural Sales department hold regular online and on-site sales of machinery, livestock, fodder, vehicles and a wide variety of stock dispersal.
